Keep trying you'll get the hang of it. In this game, you should have build a fleet in Marseilles the first year. Without fleets, France can get bottled up.

How do you use the support move and support hold thing? I can't seem to get it.

Use the final game layout as an example. If you wanted to take Brest back you would order Gascony to move to Brest. Then you would order English channel to support Gascony to Brest. I could not support Brest. So my strength would be 1, yours would be 2. You would win, and I would have to retreat.
In autumn, 1903, you support held Marseilles just fine, but it was overkill. I only had Piedmont that could attack Marseilles. So I had a strength of 1 and you had a strength of 1. When both have equal strength neither move. So you could have moved Gascony and Spain somewhere else and still held Marseilles.
