"Papers,Please" variant idea
I just thought, wouldnt the papers, please variant be a nice addition to vdip? The map should be something like this- http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=190964694&insideModal=1
Every country borders at least two others, but there are no neutrals. The SC names are already in(tho nirsk should just be a province).I have no idea how to program or balance stuff,so,can this even be done without copyright problems? And can this be an actual variant someday?

Learn to code to make your own dreams come true instead of asking for someone to consider it. It would take as much time to learn to do it yourself as convincing someone to do it for you and following through. Ignoring the potential generosity of people = ).
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Well,I might try learning to code the stuff, but Im an absolute zero at balancing stuff. And I got no testers around me.And no law knowledge,I dont want to deal with IP laws.So Im just giving an idea, the only thing I really can do.
kaner406 (2181 D Mod (B))

I never heard of papers, please. Any good?
I assume the "countries" on the linked map will be broken into territories to code things up?
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Kaner, the game is great, but not everyone will enjoy it.it is monotone, but it gas a great atmosphere of the buerocratic machine.Moral choices, terrorists, rebels, citations. You should try it out.
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Ambassador, surely the countries will consist of different provinces.
Hi Nuclear, I'd expect the same. Just the linked map didn't have boundaries for the territories inside countries. How those boundaries are placed has a big impact on gameplay, balance and overall fun :-)
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Exactly. That is why I cant make the map myself, the creator has to think or territory placement
kaner406 (2181 D Mod (B))
28 Feb 17 UTC
Sounds like a project NS! Why dont you open the map with a simple editor like Paint and give it a go?
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Maybe a bit later,but I cannot balance stuff.Like,at all.Dont expect awesomeness.
Murcanic (1453 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
I enjoy Diplomacy a lot, territory wise, put up what you have here and we can look at it for any balance issues, if it gets turned into a map then there will be play testing on it as well. I have alot of ideas for maps myself but its hard to find time between all my diplo games, college and work xD
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Welp,a little later I will put up the first version, right now I also got stuff to do.Maybe in the evening, maybe tomorrow Ill get it going.
Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))

It's a nice map, but the problem is the lack of sea territories. It would pretty much have to be an entirely army map unless you expanded the map yourself to add Sea around much of the edge, or maybe added rivers/lakes to the map as is.

If you like Papers Please (fantastic game btw) then you might be interested in the map Balkan Wars IV (http://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=46). The countries in Papers Please are all based on the Balkan countries, and if you look at the center of the board you can see much of the map of Papers Please, admittedly with slightly different borders.
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
The lack of sea terrirories can be solved by not adding fleets, adding rivers or making units be able to transform.About the balcan wars variant-sure,the map is close, but it still lacks the atmosphere. And I want to play Arstotska, not Turkey .
Murcanic (1453 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
@Captainmeme thanks for pointing out the balkan wars map, I've never played on it so I just started a gun boat to see how it plays unit wise :) anyone is welcome to join. gameID=30359

and Nuclear I look forward to your map version
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Welp, tried to balance it,looks like every country has at least two neighbours they can attack first turn.Oh,if someone here hates google+ -Im sorry, mate.
https://plus.google.com/111789846064294843187/posts/9DK2VZFnt6P
Didnt worry about aestetics, and I got language change bugged. So just look at the provinces.
Murcanic (1453 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
So it looks like 7 players with 3 sc's each?
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Yup.Classical.Actually,just a coincidence,the SCs are issuing cities in-game.
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Im stupid, forgot that Russia got 4 in the classical.
Murcanic (1453 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Classical is balanced like that for russia, but the main thing is you probably either want to either make a country here and their neutral or add in neutral sc's unless you want it to be all out war from the start, in which case the countries in the middle need an extra sc or two as the corner countries would have the advantage of not being flanked.
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
This is exactly what I meant by 'not balanced'.Im thinking of adding rivers and a fleet-army transform option,so Arstotska and Impor can actually fight each other.UnitedFed can be attacked by Impor,Obristan,Republia and Antegria.Obristan can be attacked by Antegria,Kolechia,Arstotzka.Arstotska can be attacked by Impor and Kolechia.Neutrals can be added-rebel controlled land.
Murcanic (1453 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
if you want neutrals as rebel controlled land then it might be possible to make them neutral armies that only hold, thus they have to be supported into to be removed (makes the game very interesting)
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
The thing is,the more you add,the harder it is to balance. But without adding anything it is unbalanced.Due to me having zero idea on balancing, this is already too much, can you make more exact suggestions?Id love to add more things, but I got no idea what exactly there should and should not be.
Any special rules? Does "papers please" have some special title meaning that relates to gameplay?
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
01 Mar 17 UTC
Nope.I dont think armies need to have correct documents to enter countries.
Nuclear Surok (1362 D)
01 Mar 17 UTC
Something needs to be done with the land between Impor and Arstotska,so they can actually rival each other. For example splitting Nirsk between Orvech and EastGrestin, and changing the province(s) between the countries.Suggestions?

New podcast segment: Dip Dilemmas
In a semi recent podcast episode Kaner and I floated the idea of a Diplomacy Dilemmas segment where players either post via a forum thread or PM us a tricky problem/issue they're having in a game for our "sage" guidance. We'll be recording next week, so send your dilemmas through!

NWO Game Replacement Recruitment
NWO game in progress is seeking a pool of interested replacement players for potential nation takeover in the event of CD. Currently, one nation is needing to be replaced. The game is about 70% complete. We would need some players who love the game of Diplomacy to fill in for a few weeks.Email zeldark@gmail.com if you're interested in being added to the pool. Thanks!

Dip Directions?
In episode 11 of the Diplomacy Games podcast Kaner and I discussed longevity aspects and risk management of sites like vDip and webDip to ensure they grow and reduce the chances of going down (either technically speaking or perceptions of IP infringement). We said we'd create a thread for this for others to contribute. What do you reckon?

Return to Vdip
Hi All!

After a nearly 2.5 year hiatus from playing here, I thought it might be a good time to stop back over and take a peek at what's going on. I've missed some of the variants here, and am hoping to be able to gather up a solid group of players to play a few games (not all at once necessarily) and give me that variant "fix" I've been missing. Anyone interested in some top notch play?

NWO goes MAD
The current NWO game being run at Redscape incorporated new experimental rules for the nukes: MAD (nuclear strikes can trigger automatic nuclear response). Spring 2005 sees 9 nukes trigger 3 nukes which begat another 3 nukes. Yikes!
