Diplomacy: Is Germany Too Weak?
I noticed that Germany is considerably weaker in Diplomacy than it's historical counterpart. In game, Germany can very easily be knocked out by England and France. However, historically Germany was able to fight competently on three separate fronts. Does anybody feel that Germany is a little misrepresented in game?
More importantly, are there any variants that address this?

Feedback for 1v1 Cold War on WWIV map
Hi folks, some of you may have heard me talk on the podcast about bringing the WWIV map to a Cold War circa 1984 1v1 variant. Interested in your thoughts about whether I use the standard WWIV map, the v6.2 version (is there any actual difference in the map itself?) or whether the sealane version would be better. Thoughts?

Does anyone here has a clue as to why Donald Trump is boycotting the latest republican debate? Seems to have only downsides and risks without a real gain to me. Enlighten me please.

The Original Diplomacy Variant
As many of you know, the Calhamer estate is being liquidated and the very first self-published Diplomacy board sold for just over $5000 last week. Well, something else interesting from the same sale - a bunch of prototype maps, these likely being from several years before the game was published.

Minor map issues
Is anybody able to make minor cosmetic map changes to the variants, for readability? There's two small things I've noticed:

* Imperial Diplomacy II: there's a connection between Morocco and W. Med, but the map really doesn't show it.
* First Crusade: The Sardinia supply centre in the large map is placed in an odd, almost invisible spot.

Basically, it is about a classic standard game where the initial positions are switched among the players. Everyone starts the game far away his home supply centers
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'd definitely be down for another. We have tried this before: gameID=10851

The one change made for that one was that Austria was given two armies to try to enable him to retake his home centers more easily. Unfortunately the Austrian player NMR'd constantly so it didn't end up helping much.
Looks interesting i'm in

I would join. 3 day phases sound good; 2 is fine as well.

It looks like we need the 7th player only, provided that Cpt and Xxx confirm their initial interest.
I definitely would not want Germany or Turkey in this game. Everyone else need only conquer their neighbor to build, but those two have to go through Austrian territory to get back their home SCs.
Decima Legio (1987 D)

YCHHT, I would not say so:
"
Initial Setup
The starting positions for Shift-Right Diplomacy are as follows, where A -> B means "A's units start in country B":
Germany -> Turkey
Turkey -> Germany
England -> Italy
Italy -> Russia
Russia -> France
France -> Austria
Austria -> England
"
At a first glance, I may say also Austria's path to home is a mess.
Moreover, the traffic dynamics will be mixed up, so what seems to be the shorthest path may not turn out to be the easiest path.

In any case, there's only one way to discover that: it's giving it a try. Do you want to be the 7th player?

Purely based on distances, Austria gets screwed for sure. From London, it takes a minimum of 6 turns to reach a home SC, and that's assuming you can convoy to BEL/HOL and pierce right through the heart of Germany to do it. Otherwise it's a minimum of 7 turns by fleet through the Med. And you have Germany/Turkey walking right through your homeland at the same time.

For the others we have:

France: minimum 3 turns (VIE - MAR)
Germany/Turkey: minimum 5 turns (MUN - CON)
Russia: minimum 4 turns (MAR or PAR - WAR)
Italy: minimum 4 turns (WAR - VEN)
England: minimum 5 turns (either via sea or convoy through NTH)

So not only does Austria have the longest path, but they also have two powers clashing right where they need to go (Germany/Turkey) and also another power probably blocking their shortest path (Russia moving through Germany to get back home from France). I feel for the person who pulls Austria.

I just saw this on the new games list. It sounds a little ridiculous, so I'd be interested in giving it a go!
vallk (900 D)

I'd love to give it a shot
Looking closer, it's not so much a shift right seeing as every nation has to go thru another to get to their home SCs.

The 7th player is missing: apparently Xxx is not able to join another game at the moment, due to Vdip internal RR restrictions.
Xxx, can you confirm that?
In this case I'll send the PW to other interested players

We (the mods) decided a while ago that the NMR restrictions on number of games are too harsh, so if anyone is game restricted they can contact us in the modforum ("mods link at the top right of the screen) and we'll change that for you.
OK, so Russia has 4 units but only three positions to occupy in France while Italy only has three units but needs to conquer 4 Russian SCs or Russia can build there the moment he takes another SC. Something not right with that scenario.

Game on!!

Do not worry YCHTT, it has been done before, gameID=10851 , and we will follow that example for the preliminary part of the game. It will take 7 years to move from Classic to the initial positions:
http://vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=10851&viewArchive=Maps
I'm too lazy to invent a shorter set of orders, so I suggest that we move this way.
The real game will start in Spring 1908.

http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=ShiftRight
The only change to the link I posted, as Cap said, is that the Austrian player will get off the ground from England with 2 armies, not with 2 fleets.
I agree with Cap that this change makes sense for the Austrian player.

Regarding what you said about Russia and Italy, we will take care of it before the initial position are met, in winter 1904 exactly.

Oh, also - that first game also had England starting with F Rom instead of A Rom, because otherwise imo it is too easy to stop them getting home (MAO can be blocked by one fleet). I don't know whether you want to keep that rule change or not.
Decima Legio (1987 D)

:-)
Never say never!

And good point about England. I'm fine to keep that Fleet in Rome 1908 starting position.
It would be a shame to allow the Royal Navy the use of a single fleet!

Indeed. Soon the entire map will be stained red.
