Extending the pre game time
Is it possible to extend the time while waiting for players in a game I created? If so how? Thanks

It's time to talk about Scoring
Hello all!

Let's talk about scoring? More specifically, about whether the dreaded Points Per Supply Center (PPSC) scoring should remain an option?

1 v 1 games on variant maps
I am not a coder (sic) so I was wondering how hard is/was it to code 1 v 1 games? Is it reasonable to think that variant maps (Modern, Ancient Med, etc) could be set up to create 1 v 1 games? The idea of having a larger group of countries to play against each other is intriguing. I just don't know if it possible, or doable.

How old school are you?
I am not very tech savvy so forgive me. I think I started dip on some RSS pages using Netscape at work in maybe 1996(?) does that make sense? All email based through Judges. What were they called? USDJ or something. I remember FROG but they all spoke French. Haha. I used to stand outside my office in the snow smoking a cig with a hand drawn map with about 100 crossing out for each phase using coloured pens. Ah web based interactive maps?!?! Luxury!!!

Notices
The notices on my front page are all jumbled up in a random order. PMs from weeks ago are at the top, and some of my game messages from the past day or two are lower down. Is anyone else noticing this?

Napoleonic Variant, and the lack of neutral centers
I had the honor to play 'Napoleonic' back in the lab (an awful game as Spain by the way). I had a question back then which I ask here and now:

Why there are no neutral supply centers?

New Maps
I'm super new to the site and I was curious how new maps were made and/or submitted. I noticed a lot of the maps look a bit old and it got me thinking about what it would take to create a higher resolution version of a game map. Are there certain file formats a map must be in or is this all a responsibility for site admins only? Thanks!

Imperium Diplomacy
Under the variants, I noticed one called Imperium Diplomacy, but was not able to create a game using this variant. Is it a discontinued variant, or under a different name? It looks like an interesting one, especially the beginning turns.

Vdip colour scheme
Hi, I think vdip would be more successful with a different colour scheme. Also less painful to look at.

what colo(u)r scheme do you propose?

fwiw, I don't mind this one. But no one has ever accused me of having good color coordination skills.

I like the current vDip colour scheme. It's relaxed and pleasant. Not painful at all. Much better than the horrible light green colour scheme on that other side.

I know, but you could have color shifted but kept it as the brown that unfortunately is not meeting DO's taste.

I made a user-setting for the color scheme.
You can (for now) choose between the vDip-brown or the webdip-blue in your settings page (the "Features"-tab).

If some of you can come up with other good CSS-files I can add these as options too...

semi-related to this:
i've been using my personal stylesheet for vdiplomacy.net to my personal taste and usability. it likely is not perfect at all, but it's tested by myself for some years now and nothing is significantly broken.

I've just quick and dirty published a public version of it on userstyles.org in case someone wants to try it:
https://userstyles.org/styles/151118/vdiplomacy-quick-improvements

You'll need a browser plugin like stylish or (much more recommended now) stylus ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/styl-us/ for firefox, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylus/clngdbkpkpeebahjckkjfobafhncgmne for chrome) to install the style, and you need to visit vdiplomacy on the .net domain, not on the .com to work.
Also, you have to download and install the Open Sans Font ( https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/open-sans ) to make if fully work (it still works with Arial if not installed).

generally, it ...
- creates more room on big screens for chat and map areas, going almost full screen width with some elements
- improves typography by changing to a more readable font (Open Sans)
- de-clutters the interface by removing some unnecessary lines, borders, linebreaks, background images, ...
- does not change too much to feel "wrong" - it's still brownish vdiplomacy, just improved in some aspects
- does not tamper with anything than CSS only, so no javascript or html is changed ... this limits some things to be changed, but it guarantees that nothing can break, it just does look different, it never changes any behaviours.

here's a full screenshot what it actually looks like in a game:
http://www.gestaltungssache.at/stuff/vdip_fullshot2x.png
(you might want to zoom the image to 50%, it's taken on a hidpi screen)
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

Nice. I’m not sure I can/should add this here.
I started some work some time ago to choose between 3 width sizes for the layout.
Hirnsaege (1903 D)
14 Nov 17 UTC
@Oli: if you are referring to my hacked css: it's totally allowed to use it if interested.
but if you want to use it, it should be further refined, tested and ironed out and maybe we should find some consesus on specific details ... as indicated, it's just my "make it work for myself quick" styling to streamline things and make use of the room i have available and to see as much as as possible at once.
i.e. my players list in board.php is very reduced and maybe not well usable due to my preferences + limitations to the css-only approach; also i have used a double column layout for the order dropdowns that might not fit for everyone. It is generally somewhat responsive, as widths are flexible with percentages below 1240px screen width (above that, it's max-width-limited to maintain somewhat reasonable line lengths), but there might be flaws in sizes i have never used or tested for myself.

on a sidenote:
Far in the past, i made these templates for the board.php screen, that go far beyond just css restyling, it's a semi-functional html/css/js mockup to discuss some ideas: http://gestaltungssache.at/dip/index2.php
Detailed Description of the ideas: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1696

There was an attempt last year to coordinate with the webdip developers to try out if some of this could be implemented further down the road into the main branch, but real-life got into the way rather harsh on my side and my time budget went to below zero (it's still unfortunately).
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
14 Nov 17 UTC
The mockup is really great.
Just time was the limiting factor (and I try to stay as close as possible to the original code to avoid problems integrating the webdip code.
But maybe I can add this new layout additionally to our current layout and add changes step by step as I have the time...
I will think about this and maybe have something to experiment with the next few weeks...
byoxygen (777 D)
14 Nov 17 UTC
Mockup is good but I think that colour is ... I don't like.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
14 Nov 17 UTC
Is there some kind of layout/stylesheet I can download?
I will try to change the order and the layout of the buttons and the elements to match your style, but keep most of the current color/fontstyles.
For the unit-orderplacement I will need to keep the dropdown-menus instead of the buttons, and I do not like the mouse-over-zoom on the smallmap, but the rest I might adapt. More options on this...?

Custom phase bug
This might be better in the Mods section, but I thouht I'd post here first to see if other users have any input.

I'm trying to create a new game with a custom phase length. When I select "Custom" from the drop-down menu, nothing happens. However, when I select "2 days, 2 hours", I've given the option to input a phase length. Hopefully this is an easy fix.

Tactics
In year one when you just meeting everyone, maybe there anonymous but for sure you don't know any of them. How do you know who to trust?
They can be lying through their teeth and text doesn't show tone of voice or eye contact so you have no idea. If you believe them they may stab you. If you don't you venture into a DMZ and piss them off. Ask around to others and you get rumors or nothing. This game seems so much better suited to face to face.

Classic Mini-Tourney - Is there interest?
I thought about making a mini-tourney - comprising a single game - using a similar scheme to most Face-to-Face scoring systems.

Basically it'll be a Classic game, running until Fall 1907 and a PPSC structure. The bet would be 100 points - for a ultimate pot worth 700 points.

Unable to enter certain orders. How to contact GM
Can someone help. I am playing one of the odder variants. New for me. I’ve read the variant page repeatedly and seems I ought to be able to enter a certain order. But it’s not available as an option. (Maybe I’m missing something. Or maybe a bug). Emailed the mods. But how do I contact GameMaster min a gunboat game?
