Support Rules and Dislodgings
I'm guessing you guys play by strange rules. I've never seen this not happen outside of here: One, if a force gets dislodged, the move cuts supports/convoys. Two, to cut a support/convoy, it has to get moved towards. The supporting or convoying unit doesn't have to actually get dislodged.

Is Diplomacy Ultimately About Luck
Years ago when I first bought the board game for a group of friends, some of them didn't want to play because they saw the game was all about luck. That idea still rings in my mind from time to time.

Is Norway Undervalued in 1066?
Something I notice when playing 1066 (v2) is that England and Normandy always do battle, and Norway usually has a lot of leeway to mop things up. I guess the larger size of the North Sea spaces give the illusion that Norway is farther away, but in reality, it's just two spaces away just like Normandy.

Germany still has over 20 SCs, and Italy looks like it's going to overrun. We could use a German player to keep things balanced.

Rational Moves Test
You guys could really use some sort of test to license people to play games in. It's annoying when irrational players ruin the game for rational players by allowing third players to win after overrunning them.

Does Drawing in WTA Backfire?
I was wondering if the logic behind WTA draws isn't necessarily reliable. Draws allow people to make alliances, and instead of drawing against the solo winner, they simply draw among themselves instead of pursuing a solo victory. Is there a way to disable drawing so this doesn't happen?

Diplomacy Logic
In the WWIV variant, there is a territory called EBR (East Britain) which is in the west of England. wtf????
In Imperial Diplomacy II there's similarly a territory called Barrier when it is no where near the Great Barrier Reef (technically the territory should be called Great Australian Bight). The same variant also incorrectly calls the Dutch East Indies territory of Irian Jaya the name Irian Java (has nothing to do with Java).

Wonder what other mistakes are in variant maps?

Imperial II , my favorite variant of all time (right Ninja?), has a few naming quirks. This is partially because the people who encoded it into RealPolitik did not consult with the map designer, and guessed at several names. Michael's origninal name for the space now called Barrier was Great Australian Bight. Similarly, the territory abbreviated as BAN was called Bandar al Abbas or something like that. When it got converting to RP the Bight became Barrier (or Barrier Sea or Great Barrier Reef), and Bandar became Bangalore (which is in India). Michael spelled Irian Jaya correctly on his abbreviations page, which was sadly lost somewhere in time.

I guess someone is always going to poke holes in the naming choices those. I'm still bitter at Tom for the "Bull Run" affair.

I wish it were the ONLY such mistake! When having to name so many spaces, every so often it gets easy to confuse your directions. Remember you guys are using an older rev map, kaner is programming the most recent and just yesterday he asked what "MVR" stood for (a sea zone off Namibia) turns out I must have been standing on my head as that spaces was supposed to be WVR. There is (and has been) an abbreviation page http://www.freewebs.com/tomahaha/ww4abbreviations.htm
This however is for the most current map design (less the several just added spaces that is). No excuse other than ooops!

Maybe kaner can correct it while he's at it?

In the WWIV variant, some of the chinese territories are incorrectly named

Yah - at the moment I'm making the connections between territories.

Then I'll correct a few of the misnamed ones.
EBR => WBR
MRC => WRC
MWA => AZP

What territories are misnamed in china, tiger?

There is that one Manchurian territory that currently does not have a name. I think it should be JIL.

I do not believe anything in China is mislabeled and nothing is un-named. Maybe the old map you have been playing on is wrong from past coding? But the new one as compared to the chart looks good to me (I actually spent a LOT of time on China trying to get things as accurate as I could, it being an area I was not as familiar with as far as provinces and such. There are certainly some liberties taken with the map lines as is seen everywhere (can't help that) but they SHOULD be fairly accurate and one person from China actually told me he was quite surprised at how accurate a westerner did on China! (though he did get a chuckle out of the Sichuan and Song Empires, especially the Song since that was pulled from OLD history and that starting territory is iffy at best as far as even past reality)

Yunan=Yunnan
Zhengzhou=Zhejiang
(I think)
Tomahaha (1170 D)

well there you go, Yunan is simply a spelling difference and I have a map that showed it as the single N though looking closer, I do see the double N is more accepted and the correct way of spelling though it does not affect the map abbreviation and Zhengzhou you are absolutely correct there! (though again, the map stays correct)

Does Anyone Want to Play a Live Classic?
It's the weekend, so I figured maybe there's a handful of several people who want to play a classic game with 10 minute turns.

Please post here if you're interested. I'll check in regularly over the new few hours in case there's interest.

This is purely out of interest. Add your variant of choice below, or if it is already on the list add a +1 to it. For me it would be:

Lab Diplomacy
I cannot get onto labdip on my computer, it just says "Error triggered: require_once(variants/Carthage/variant.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory.

This was probably caused by a software bug. The details of this error have been successfully logged and will be attended to by a developer."
Has anyone else had this problem? (I am using google chrome, on IE it always says I'm using an invalid cookie).

Diplomatic Strategy
I am somewhat new to this site (although I have been playing Diplomacy for several years now) and I noticed diplomatic relations were conducted a bit differently then what I am accustomed to.
So I guess I'm wondering how you conduct yours. What you except from your neighbors within the first turn, what you expect of your allies, how and why you conduct stabs, and the like.
