A discussion of the merits and balance of the various two player scenarios...
Also, an offer to try any of them so long as they are unrated. I don't mind a loss and consider it a challenge to hang in as long as possible in the somewhat unbalanced. Although never again will I play Russia v Germany.

A diplomacy Forum
I came up with this idea to help Oli with the webdip exodus as well as just in general. How would you all feel about a independant forum (like a proboards style) for online diplomacy players?

Nice idea Syn, but no one is going to go there for debates about lawn care and politics. Accept maybe a few grognards.

Most of the traffic at webdip are players who see asinine threads when they log into play diplomacy, and can't help themselves but to reply.

Basically what krellin said.
Synapse (814 D)

I think we have a strong enough community to warrant people logging in, and like webDip/vDip there will be discussion of Diplomacy events, strategies and f2f as well as general chat.

Syn - sure I am (the same). I'm a polite pleasant person irl, despite what you've seen in some other place and time. I've entered what appears to be a bland place by design (as opposed to some other place you may be thinking of, which was never bland, and never intended to be). so...I'm not one to buck the rules (intentionally....much...) so I'll assume my bland roll here

As President Eden said before, I don't see why the supplemental forum would have a forum dedicated to Diplomacy. That's precisely what this forum is for isn't it? Putting diplomacy threads on a separate site would only serve to sever the discussion into people who discuss diplomacy here on vdip, and those who discuss diplomacy on the other site. Wouldn't it be wiser to leave the diplomacy discussion on the actual diplomacy website and simply supplement on the new site with the off-topic threads?

It's inevitable that a group of players linked by diplomacy might want to discuss diplomacy there, I don't think it's feasible to remove that forum. The way I personally see it games and tournaments and EOG will always be organised here, but more detailed strategies and variant development might be better on a forum that doesn't spam the site. Of course it's up to people what they post, but I can't have a diplomacy forum without an area for discussing diplomacy.

That's like saying a news site shouldn't allow comments about separate news stories in their comments, drano

Synapse -

I get that it might be inevitable that people want to discuss diplomacy, but stating right off the bat the idea is to sever the diplomacy discussion seems odd. Purposely separating strategies and variant development (which by the way, I'm almost positive there's already a site dedicated to variant development in existence) from chat about games and tournaments only serves to separate the community. Honestly, not everyone is going to join this other site, therefore it's automatically separating potential talks about strategies and development since the community is separated, with some people only on vdip and some people on both. We already have a forum here, which is linked to the site where we play diplomacy. It is logical that diplomacy discussions would happen here, on the forum linked to the place we play.

That said, I don't want to imply that the site shouldn't go forward. If you want to have a separate forum for discussion about diplomacy, all the power to you. I just don't think it should be officially sanctioned as *the* place for vdip diplomacy discussions.
Actually, he'll just shoot you if you're walking down the street wearing a hoody and looking suspicious
Synapse (814 D)

It's not *the* place for vDip diplomacy discussions. It's *the* place for discussions and debate. But as our shared interest is diplomacy, it makes sense to allow for that too lol

Allow it sure, I said so myself in my second paragraph. However, your previous posts imply that you see it as a possible better place to discuss strategies and variant development. i simply pointed out that there's already a site for variant development, and that by promoting those discussions off vdip, you're promoting severing the discussion. Presumably, you're going to engage in those conversations on your site (if I'm wrong, please let me know), which means you're actively promoting severing the discussion about diplomacy. I get that you can't control what others post (well, technically you could if you're the admin right?), but if you yourself engage in those discussions, you're promoting it. Vdip is the common denominator here, we all have accounts here. So it follows that things that affect all of us (like strategy discussions) should happen here.

Again, by all means, create a forum for anyone who wants to go discuss anything you want, I'm not opposing that by any means. I simply don't think it should be vdip promoted or vdip sanctioned in any way if it implies that conversations about diplomacy are going to be happening there that could possibly have happened here instead. If we want to grow vdip and make it better (and I'm sure many people agree we could use some improvement), then those conversations need to happen here, where everyone can see it.

Please do not think my intention is in anyway way to replace the forum functionalities of vDip or webDip.

"But as our shared interest is diplomacy, it makes sense to allow for that too lol"

Then why not stay on the site that also allows you to actually play Diplomacy?
Synapse (814 D)

Because all of the mods were banning people for no reason.
If you're referring to vDip, then because we enjoy heated political debates which would lower the tone around here.

"Then why not stay on the site that also allows you to actually play Diplomacy?"
I think everyone here knows the answer to that 2WL, and I'm talking about Synapse not me (its even more obvious why I can't)
krellin (1031 D)

Why do you need a separate forum off-site? So the arbitrary Thought Police don't get all up in your shit.

Why won't it work? Because people log in to play games and see interesting topics randomly pop up and decide to get all up into people's shit.

Why is doesn't belong here? Because people here apparently have set a tone for not getting all up in people's shit, and no doubt will police thoughts more heartily than some other site that used to have a forum in which the previous owner was all about letting people get up in people shit...and that is what made THAT site special - the free exchange of passionate ideas of any and all spectrum of belief.

Y'all just need to mourn the loss of what was once great and find some new way to amuse yourselves.

Of course, reading this thread, apparently directing negative comments at specific individuals isn't frowned upon - or do I have to PM/email someone and ask that people please be polite, because I have sensitive feelings that I don't wish to have them hurt here?

Can't a guy just log into a web site to play a game and have pleasant conversation without people trying to sling insults at him?

Synapse (814 D)
30 Jul 14 UTC
It's only you Krellin who is going to piss everyone off at vDip by INSISTING to post your politics here instead of a site that is set up FOR YOU and for people who WANT you to post there. I can't help but feel you're doing it all on purpose.
krellin (1031 D)
30 Jul 14 UTC
Now now, Syny - no need to get yoruself in such a froth. You see, Oli, very *politely*, has explained a thing to me that others (who shall remain nameless) chose to say in less-than-such-polite tones. (I do so consistently have to scratch my head in the wonder of it all when people decide to be *nasty* because they think someone is being nasty. Such hypocrisy tends to rub me the wrong way, and subsequently I turn on the *ignore* sign in my brain...)

But Oli has made his statement, and I shall abide.

Possible to implement this rule variant?
I was wondering, is it feasible for a variant like Ambition and Empire (http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Ambition_and_Empire) to be implemented on vDiplomacy? It's not just a map variant, it also has a few additional rules. The biggest one is the Diplomacy Points: you get one per supply centre you own, and can issue one order to a neutral unit per point. Others can do so as well, and the order most commonly given to the unit is the one that gets used.
