I have a couple of rules questions regarding variants.
With variants that say they do not allow for a draw, is that the case? Do those formats not have stalemate lines, or how do those games resolve if a stalemate is reached.

WWIV Sealanes Game
So, the last time I tried to get one going, we hit around 26-27 players before the time limit killed it. To my knowledge, there are no games ongoing aside from those gunboats.

Middle-East variant
I've started work on a variant of the contemporary Middle-East, but as I'm not an expert at balancing variants, I was wondering if someone can give me some insight into how to make it fair?

RE: Obama's Response to ISIS and the Refugees
There are 40,000 - 50,000 minority refugees, a majority of them Christian, fleeing for their lives from ISIS. And what is ISIS doing to these men, women and children. They are beheading the children and women and hanging the men. They are closing in these people.

Opinioniated favorite variants
Hello all! I'm not familiar with all these variants compared to what are on Webdiplomacy. I'm looking to play some games but I'm not sure which ones are really good and which ones are not so much fun. So what's popular variant wise?

Multiple Cancelings?
So... I was in a game of Rinacemento that had not yet started. Not enough people joined. So it canceled. And canceled. And canceled. And canceled. I have NINE messages saying it canceled, BUT, I was NOT refunded 9 times! Not to mention, it still shows up in my games... which is annoying.... I WANT MY REFUND!

Perpetual Diplomacy
Is there a variant of Diplomacy that is designed to be a perpetual game? In other words, players are free to come and go as they please, but the motivation is to be the biggest player on the board, not to "win".

Diplomacy on the Radio
I'm listening to an episode of the radio program "This American Life" about Diplomacy. Featuring the same guy who recently wrote the Diplomacy article on Grantland. Not sure if it's the current episode or a repeat, but I figured I'd mention it here for those interested. Should be available on podcast now or soon.

Oli, thank you for the color-blindness interface.
I have protonapia and this is awesome. That plus labeling the countries speaking global and the interactive map males it so much better and less confusing... Even on the phone (interactive doesn't let me interact but still shows what I ordered using the drop down).

Joining running games to compensate missed turns is not easy ...
... if there are so few games around to join.

I'd like to take over some country and compensate for some missed turns happily – i just can't find any game to join that are ...
Hirnsaege (1903 D)

– without moderation
– without password
– without totally hopeless positions to take over ... (taking over a 1-center-country that will be gone next turn anyway does not really "save" a running game anymore).

Is there a way to loosen the restrictions of joining / creating new games when there are no running games to join and replace a player around? currently i'm a bit in a deadlock ...
I agree with you. Maybe the mods can look into having another reliablity rating which only shows for example the last 30 games

At the moment it looks like the take-over penalities for missed games and turns are too succsessfull.
I removed the restrictions from your account.

thank you!
I have one missed turn and one CD from long ago. Anything you can do to change my R88 (my two percentages are 92 and 97, so how it is an R88 is beyond me)? I was going to pick up one the other day, but my R rating was too low.

I'm in the same boat with hirnsaege. can't join new games, but no CDs to takeoever/ I am limited to 6 games , one where I've been eliminated for a few months now. Is there any way we could at least stop the eliminated game from counting (if it is counted)?

The main goal of the site-restriction feature is to discourage NMRs.
It should go without saying that the reason for this goal is that NMRs do ruin games and nothing and none could ever "save" those games.
Unfortunately and for obvious reasons, we can't forbid NMRs but this doesn't mean that NMRing is a right or that it's a right you can get for free.
What we can forbid is people trying to work around the site-restrictions feature by becoming multiaccounters. We often ban accounts for this reason.

So if you have restrictions it's because you NMR'd a bit too much.

Encouraging takeovers is another important goal of this feature. Both to relieve (when possible) the damage to open games and to make good positions a bit harder to find. I think it's important that joining running games to compensate missed turns be not that easy.
Otherwise players could NMR whenever they like, for free, without ever facing a site-restriction, having just to take over 1 non-hopeless position - for the half of its worth! - right after they ruined some games with 5 NMRs!

Possible solutions:
1. join one of those hopeless positions - surely you won't save the game, yes we know, and you'll get a defeat in your stats. But that's the price for the games you ruined with your NMRs.
2. wait for a better position to show up and take it over - it requires some effort and it might take a while: that's the price for...
3. PM someone in a private game and ask for the password - it requires some effort and you could be unlucky and have passwords denied: that's the price...
4. keep the restriction - that's the price...
5. Catch the site-admin in a good mood and get the restriction removed :-)

Clearly you find out that the best solution is to not NMR at all. Sure. Non-NMRing must be the best option in this feature, otherwise the whole point of the feature would be lost.
Please consider also that members who play many games at once are the first whose possible rising NMR-attitude should be stopped, for obvious reasons.

That said, not counting games you are already defeated is a good suggestion.

Not sure if I'm understanding the computation right but...

It seems our Restriction is based on number of NMRs and CDs? But it is not taken as a fraction over number of moves we've played successfully. So what we have is a case of continually increasingly worse rating which can only be reduced by CD takeovers.

Is that right?

Also, I've got to ask why we keep stats separate for NoNMR and NoCD, when they don't seem to affect if you can join a game or not. My NoNMR and NoCD are both in the 96+ range, but based on the computation my RR is 89, meaning I wouldn't be able to join a game with RR>90. If the point of these stats were so that they could be used to monitor how reliable people are joining your game, well...it seems redundant to keep both these two and the RR?

Just realized after trying today looking through my profile slowly instead of skimming through it like always.

thanks for the feedback, and of course i'm aware why there are restrictions in place after NMRing and this is totally right to avoid ruining too much games by some overly enthusiastic joiner.
it was just that in the current low offer of joinable games it was very difficult to ever get back to the party ever.

i think excluding games counting where one is defeated is a very good idea.

i also thought about excluding (or half-excluding?) games that are on pause – i have one sleeping game we definitely plan to continue but will be paused for a total of about 2 months ... but of course that's more difficult to calculate right ...

another suggestion is to somehow "age" NMRs ... for example, i've had quite some NMRs in a crisis situation earlier this year which i feel sorry about but just con't avoid – i think they don't reflect my current or general reliability, but weight heavy (and forever?) in my stats.

I will never remove these NMRs or CDs from the stats.
Maybe it's a good idea to add a last-6 month-performance to the stats.

New default Pot-Type WTA....
As the subject suggests.
To gather a bit more feedback about this issue I changed the default from PPSC to WTA and made a big announcement about this on the gamecreation-page.
This will last for the next few month and we will see if the games get better, worse, or if nobody cares.
