The Lost Art of Reading Orders (feature request)
Because you need to click on a link to see the orders, I feel like players on this and other sites are not paying as close attention to the orders being issued. I know they're being shown graphically, but that can be ambiguous or hard to notice; reading the orders makes you notice things you might not have, like why something is failing or what another country is trying to do, or tell you (for gunboat games).

I'd suggest placing the latest set of orders just below the map.

Also, an offer to try any of them so long as they are unrated. I don't mind a loss and consider it a challenge to hang in as long as possible in the somewhat unbalanced. Although never again will I play Russia v Germany.

1st Spring duration
30 minutes are given to the 1st spring negotiations while 15 are given to the following turns.
This happens under the standard board game rules.
Decima Legio (1987 D)
12 Sep 14 UTC
I do not recall if this has been discussed in the past, and honestly I don't know how other internet diplomacy sites handle the 1st turn duration.

However, I do think that there are some good reasons why the most important turn of a game has the double of the time at disposal...
Should we consider to follow this standard rule here as well?
Tomahaha (1170 D)

Most games I have played have a longer time for negotiations before the first moves are due. But the times have varied greatly,
Most games on other sites had one per week deadlines
some games had 2 weeks of negotiating
others had a few DAYS more
while still some others were simply the same and had only the same one week time.

Myself, on games I had hosted. I preferred Tuesday deadlines
I would try to start the game on Sunday night giving the players a mere day and a half longer. But yes, it is customary to allow a bit more time for negotiating before the first orders are due, but it is no firm and fast rule by any means.
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)

There are some customary protocols to provide more time for the initial negotiations, and they appear to be very popular. However, I am one that disagrees with the idea in principle. The net result of extending the first turn is that you offer everyone more time to send out a series on meaningless platitudes where everyone purports to wish everyone else a good game, and then immediately declares that they will spend the next two turns grabbing neutral dots before they actually have any interest in discussing strategy. In this environment, which is the typical setting of most Dip games here, you really don't need more time for the first spring cycle. In fact the first season of the game is no more critical than any other season of the game. To accept that it is by instituting a policy as such, preaches a degree of inflexibility, and diminishes the need for players to work hard at communication across the entire game. Tactical savvy will take you only so far. The best players in this hobby are the ones who communicate well. And the third or thirteenth season of a game could very well wind up being more critical than the first season. It's more important to establish a rhythm of the game, getting players accustomed to the length of the turns. Cutting this time in half suggests that the only time that having detailed and/or complex conversations is on the first turn.

Tommy, the word myself is a reflexive pronoun. You sound like a professional athlete being interviewed, attempting to sound intelligent, and making a mope of yourself (see that's how you use reflexive pronouns) in the process.
Don't forget his use of had hosted instead of have hosted. Had is past tense ownership. Have (as it should have been used) is the verb of be he wanted to use there.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
13 Sep 14 UTC
No on all counts. Why are some trying to staet an argument? I had hosted games in the past where I allowed for a few days extra time but not double the time. It was indeed in the past and had was the correct word as they have been complete for some time. And the word "myself" is correct and chosen for a reason. Me myself, I like to do things that partibular way. I was not stating what is or should be standard. It is what I have done hosting several dozen games. This is no rule and is no demand only what I prefer to do, why turn my experience into an argument when someone was asking for our opinions?
And I happen to disagree with ruffy totally ..since he started the argument. The game rules allow for extra time for a reason. I also use this extra time myself during the first turn. Why is it a problem with ruff for me to use the word myself but he can turn around and tell us how he thinks we are wrong? I happen to use that time so there you go....he is wrong in his statement that nobody uses the extra time!

But that being said... I have no big problem not having the extra time. It is up to the individual and o would side on caution allowing those who want that customary extra time to have it while ruff wants things HIS way only and we should play his rules.
It's "I have hosted games..." In correct use of had there. Hosted makes it past tense. The only time you would use had is "Had I hosted games..." in the form of a speculative statement.
And the use of "myself" should have been prefixed with "As for". Properly your statement would have been "As for myself, I have hosted..."
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)
13 Sep 14 UTC
You're both incorrect. Assuming that you are okay starting paragraphs with prepositional phrases, the proper phrasing should have been: "As for me..."

The word myself is a reflexive pronoun. Look that up boys. The word is never used as the subject of of a sentence. The word is not interchangeable with the word, me. Additionally no else ever does anything to yourself. You do things to yourself.

Tom, how would you have any clue how long players use in negotiations. You're just an assclown spewing nitwittery out of your ass. You lack the ability to read an process an opinion that differs from you kneejerk cliched perspectives.
Tom doesn't even play. He has, what, one game to his name thus far?

Thats right my english may not have been exact as somevwould like but it did not change the meaning or what was said. Those things wete quite clear and I simply stated my opinion and how games were played that I had taken part in. The argument wad started by another. God forbid I shouldcstaye anythingbcounter to what ruffhaus thinks he knows. And I only played one game? No. That would be only one game HERE I have played and gmed games for over 30 years. If all that matters is what happens here and you want to listen to only those who play here exclusively. Then yes only one game that I topped by the way. Thanks forcwelcoming others ...asshole

Please read the posting from the start. I was polite and only offering what I had experienced. Several otherscjumped all overcwhat was said as if I were being combative or srrogant or ...whatever. it was not so and I do not appreciate being called names and getting picked on for no obviouscreason. You have some buffoons here making these forums a mockery of the site. I feel unwelcomecand may never come back...including the game just started
. If multiple people here can act like total asses treating others with such disrespect when it was uncalled for....I may just leave. And it would be good riddance as people like this are rude and very obnkxoious hijacking forum discussions and turning them sour.
Here we go. Next will be the name dropping. I've been playing since the late 70s, or just over 35 years. So what. My point is why do you hang out here if you aren't going to play?
Oh and you didn't "top" anything. Hou were part of a draw. Equal split amongst all drawees nobody is the "top" in a draw.

I find it very funy how you guys resorted to English lessons. The resort of those who have nothing else to argue. You cant win so you resort to insults and grammar issues ...as if any here are always gramatically correct all the time? Losers play the game losers play...
"Tops" in a draw is a factual error. I was correcting the facts ofbyour argument, not your grammar.

No. I was at the gop when the game ended. I did in fact finish at the top. It does count the sane as a one center survivor but if I had been in that siguation you would have pointed to that as well. I simply pointed out I am much better than the person trying to show I was only a noob ...not so

Tom, you really are just a clueless old fart, aren't you? Do you ever laugh? Do you ever read anything without being offended or having your feelings hurt? You are the biggest pussy around. You must have been the kid that had his lunch money extorted every day. The grammar comment was a dig at you that you are too naïve to comprehend. You're so wrapped up in your own narcissism that you cannot ever bother to do so properly. That's what's hilarious.

Your suggestion that there first turn is more important and should be a hard and fast rule is based on FTF play. We are not playing FTF here and the applying the same factor of 2 to the negotiation phase is inappropriate and unnecessary. Allowing some extra time might be a good idea, but the knee jerk need to double the time is simply stupid. There's a huge difference between 30/15 minutes to 2 weeks/1week, and if you actually played the game, you would know that this does not need a proportionate response to the actual rules. In fact doing so does damage to the game in that it reinforces the dynamic where players only focus on communication on the first turn. Stressing the need for play *only* on the open spring season does a disservice to the rest of the games' turns, which are every bit as important. The game is not decided on the first season. Stop perpetuating that myth.

You want to talk about facts? Fine. It is a fact that you have no idea what players need or want because you do not play. When you GM games you give no consideration to players' needs, only your own as the GM. And you only GM because you love the power rush that you get. In another world you'd have been one of these over the top cops that we see on viral videos, kicking the crap out of someone. I be you referee basket ball games for the sheer thrill of awarding a technical foul and being able to eject a bickering coach. You do not know how much time players need or want. This conversation is about that very topic, and you rush in telling us about yourself... You have no perspective to comment on this, specifically because you ignore what players ask for.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
15 Sep 14 UTC
Ummm, "That there" is incorrect grammar
...just sayin'

And if you had actually read what I had stated,
You would have found that I was cool with whatever the decision was. If I had my choice I would give a little extra time and that I seldom if ever actually doubled the time (where we agree) yet instead you decided to jump all over something not said, your need to feel superior and all important overrode what was actually said now wasn't it?

Your OPINION that the first turn requires no extra time is just that, it is your opinion! The question was asked what we thought and what our experiences were. I mentioned just that, what I have played and hosted, I mentioned it could however go any way. You come down on the side that any who disagree with your opinion has to be wrong. I am not perpetuating any myth, I am simply reporting what I happen to do and what I happen to like. I also know many others who appreciate a little extra time before the first move. It being our opinions, we can not be wrong (despite how much you claim we are).

I am also quite tired of your "you don't play" mantra. If you say it enough it must be true? No I do not play as many games as you but I usually have one going at all times and the number of games I have played over the years numbers is up there. I do play often enough to know of what I speak. Your playing several at a time does not make your opinions any more valid than mine. Plus I have hosted many more games than you will ever dream of, my knowledge from that end of things (GM in a human moderated and human mapped game) does give me a bit more of a unique insight than yours. Maybe I do have more to say than do you?

And no "I be" not refereeing any basketball games
I simply mentioned what I had been exposed to, it is YOU who are demanding that your opinion trumps that of any and all others, YOUR perspective is not the be all end all Lord Randolph.

Possible to implement this rule variant?
I was wondering, is it feasible for a variant like Ambition and Empire (http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Ambition_and_Empire) to be implemented on vDiplomacy? It's not just a map variant, it also has a few additional rules. The biggest one is the Diplomacy Points: you get one per supply centre you own, and can issue one order to a neutral unit per point. Others can do so as well, and the order most commonly given to the unit is the one that gets used.
