How does placement work on this map? Waiting for our game to start and curious. Are there set positions? I see no listing.

Also, that was a ppsc game, so improving the position would likely mean that you would gain points. (If if wasn't Rinascimento.)
So how do we determine which are and aren't rated? Are all official variants unrated and only classic in the three press forms rated?
Devonian (1887 D)

I think only Rinascimento isn't rated, and of course games that are created as unrated games.
Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))

All other variants are rated unless you set it as unrated in game creation. Rinascimento isn't because it's supposed to have a weighted point distribution which is not easy to do with vPoints (see the 'New pot distribution system' section at the bottom of the variant page).
Yeah, and that also explains why my share in PPSC, should his Holiness win without taking my SCs, is so big.
kaner406 (2181 D Mod (B))

Also I think that FUBAR should be considered unrated under the vRank system as well. I don't think that it is though.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

Well kaner, isn't it just a matter of limits?
Take a popular variant like Colonial for example. According to the current stats, China has been defeated in 73 games out of 116. We can say that your expectation, when you start a game playing that country, is to be eliminated 2 times out of 3. So any China's result different from defeat looks heroic, but the system doesn't rate it differently from the same result of Japan, whose islands in its corner look almost inaccessible. Japan has only 19 defeats and its solo+draw ratio is double than China's. So I wonder why on earth 2 equally rated players have the same Re Ø when one is China and the other is Japan.

I'm just saying that, instead of setting a limit and keep unrated the variants beyond such an arbitrary limit, it would be better to find an adjustment for any inbalance.
Which won't be easy to make and it will never be perfect, but it will be much less inaccurate than just pretending that all the games you rate are as balanced as a Migraine or a Pure.

- - -

On an overall view, Oli, your score will _not_ "even out after a few games".
I'm the #10 just because I drew Britain in a Colonial, Almoravids in a FirstCrusade, Spain in an Abstraction etc., and it's going on since months. Maybe since a year or more.

I could be even better placed if only I used to join games without anti-NMR options enabled and take advantage from NMRs, since I would be much more reliable than my opponents. Playing low-quality games is very rewarding in the long term and I would do it, if I cared about my ranking more than about the quality of my games.

So, IMHO, this supposed "auto-fix" feature of the system can't be considered a panacea for any flaws and it shouldn't prevent you from implement further enhancements on this new system.
Especially if you plan to make of this the only points system in the site and you plan to build features on it, like the one proposed by DL, which would be fantastic if only this system was accurate enough already.
kaner406 (2181 D Mod (B))

Well no it isn't Guaroz. In the fubar variant you simply cannot loose as Fatflab unless you screw up by NMRing or such. Diplomacy or not.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
02 Mar 15 UTC
Hence it is.
Your limit is very high and you look to think that the only maps that need a special treatment are Fubar and Rinascimento. All the other maps can be treated like if they were as balanced as Migraine.
My limit is lower and I think there's a big difference in being Srivijaya or Arabia in a KW901 game. Those countries simply have incredibly different chances. Just because such chances are a bit less incredibly different than in Fubar doesn't mean the rating is fair.

If you think it makes no difference, we could ask some Mod to swap our positions everytime you draw a country better than mine in our games! :)

There isn't a way to equalize a single rating system across different maps, different victory philosophy (PPSC vs WTA), and different press settings. Plus, team games, CD's, and even anonymous settings can skew ratings.

It won't balance out perfectly ,discounts 1v1 games, which is a clear disadvantage for me, and it has a tendency to inflate values as time goes on, but I think it still is a good system overall.

So I am in two different Imperial games and there is no way you are going to convince me that Japan has the same chances as Russia. So there is no way, especially with the choose your country option, that it will balance itself out.

I would agree with you that the choose your own country option is bad, and I recommend avoiding those games in all but special rules games where that option is necessary. You're wrong about Japan and Russia in Imperial though. Both are very strong performers on this map. And both can quickly see things go terribly wrong. You can find yourself as Russia, thinking that you got a raw deal if the alliances shake out poorly.

It really depends on how you play things, and how the other nations on the map. I have played and GM (hand adjudicated) this variant over 50 times, and seen every country top the supply center count. Solos are very rare at the 84 supply center criterion. Here at VDip there are more solos because the default victory setting is 70, and the PPSC actually encourages players to throw games.

This map is actually very well balanced. People tend to look at the map and decide immediately that it is imbalanced because England, France, and Russia start large, while Holland catches up fast. At the same time all four of these nations are very difficult to play. All of them depend on setting the smaller powers against each other. Rinascimento suffers from the same perceptions, although it's unique characteristics offer more advantages to certain powers. That does not make the small nations powerless, or even weak. The starting supply center totals and colonial build sites create additional diplomatic effort and risk.

Mexico and Japan on the Imperial map are actually very attractive assignments. Mexico can quickly double in size, and if played well, can dominate in North or South America. Japan is easily defended for several turns, and has great claims on the Pacific. The USA+CSA alliance is among the strongest on the map. A Prussia+Austria alliance is very difficult to break.

Imperial is a variant that rewards active diplomacy and punishes those who do not communicate well (or at all). If you try to run this map alone as any power while the other players talk, then you're going to get whacked. Now if the game has no communication at all, it's tilted towards the big nations. That doesn't make it unplayable in gunboat or anonymous games. Even in gunboat games there are ways to communicate with your orders.

I agree that Imperial is pretty well balanced despite the perception that some powers are bigger and some smaller. The smaller powers are more compact and fight on fewer fronts while the big nations are more spread out and can easily die quickly if diplomacy goes bad, as each of their colonies on their own cannot fight against a determined alliance of local powers that are smaller but more powerful regionally. At the same time this means that they have greater expansion opportunities. I think one thing though that smaller powers dread is the Dutch-French-British alliance, which can fight essentially everyone at the same time and hold ground, especially if the other powers have problems of their own, and the possibility of such an alliance probably is a major cause for the perception of the colonial powers as stronger.

I disagree on Rinascrimento though. If you look at the record there is nothing balanced about this variant, and the fact a special pot system is made for this variant supports this. Venice can always dominate the East unless Venice is stupid or faces a very determined alliance, while the smaller nations always have to count on the friendliness of their bigger neighbors, especially Siena. Ferrera is the only small nation which I say stands any real chance, if he is a good diplomat. The worst is the French, who if faced with a less than friendly Genova would simply have no option but perish, as he really borders no one else and has too few tools, diplomatic or otherwise at hand to mount any viable attack. I think France here is the equivalent of placing a one SC Iceland behind Britain in classic. No one can come to his rescue soon enough and sooner or later a Britain will any intelligence will lope off his head.

Reliability rating
Why is the rating system so penal and thus discouraging for people to repair it??? I have literally made hundreds of consecutive moves within the time deadlines, and still I find myself in some "purgatory" that won't allow me to be in one new game at a time...It is turning me off to the site if I can't be upgraded at some point based on a 3 game mess I made a year and a half a go when my mom passed away....

Question regarding variant
In the variant Rat Wars, the rules state that some SC squares cannot be occupied by Arrow Rat. However, does that just mean when an arrow rat moves there it doesn't become that person's SC, or an arrow rat cannot move into that square entirely? Like, can you move an arrow rat on such a square just to prevent others from taking the SC?
