Why doesn't vDiplomacy have the 1900 variant?
It seems that the 1900 variant is the most balanced game for Diplomacy but its only available on PlayDiplomacy. How come no one made a version here?

For what I've seen there's not one of the great variants of Baron Von Powell, not just 1900 but neither Ambition and Empire (co-authored with Jeff Kase): http://diplom.org/Zine/F2008M/AnE/AErules.htm

I miss them also because they two of the best variants ever, with emphasis on the historical setting, and, if I recall correctly, I did help a bit personally as "consultant" of sorts in the case of A&E.

My guess is that nobody ever bothered coding them. A&E is more complicated because it has "active neutrals", controlled by players' vote, what seems to require an adaption of the rules for judge (or the introduction of a GM "false player" that controls them according to original intent)... but 1900 is just a classic map variant, with an expanded colonial Med and a few other changes.

Wow thank you so much for the response! I don't know much about Ambition and Empire, could you give me a run-down of the highlights of that variant?

And yeah I'm thinking 1900 really shouldn't be that difficult to code into this website since its just an expanded version of the original game. Is there anyone I can contact here to perhaps look into turning 1900 into a playable map here?

I put a link above for A&E. I only played it once or twice long ago.

Powers are not "balanced". That's intentional and something to take in account when playing. I'd say it's for advanced players with a high sense of balance, not for stick-to-alliance players. Britain-Hannover is a 4-center power, France, Russia, Austria and Prussia have 3 -centers, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Poland-Saxony and Turkey have 2 centers. It's not as extreme as Rinascimento, which has a most serious 4-1 power imbalance that seems to require a revision. 4-2 (mostly 3-2 because Britain begins with a disconnected fleet at Gibraltar) is more manageable but still requires some balance consideration and 2-dot powers, especially those in the Baltic area, are particularly difficult at the beginning.

Additionally powers have "diplomacy points" that act as "votes" (secret, so a GM is needed to manage that, or a very especial code) that can order neutral units to support (neutral units can't move). So that adds an extra dimension to neutrals, which can behave as allies and therefore are not just "prey". There are some especial rules for certain neutrals (for example Turkey can't ever control the Pope or some powers have an extra vote in certain historically allied countries: Austria in Tuscany, Turkey in the Barbary states and Crimea, Poland in Courland). Read the rules because I don't recall all the details.

The secret neutral control allows for secret alliances and an extra dimension of complexity in early (and even mid-game) play.
The 1900 variant was being game tested in the vDiplomacy Lab. But nothing seems to have happened with it for a while. I've created a thread about this.

It makes no sense to play-test 1900: it is a consolidated variant. You play-test new variants in order to assess their playability, not consolidated ones.
Actually, Luis, you play test everything in case there is a bug. Perhaps two territories don't connect properly. Play test helps shake that kind of thing out. Of course, us software developers know that all our code is perfect and works as intended, NOT! :-)

I see: you play-test the code. Fair enough. :)

Who can we reach out to for an update on 1900?
Hi Taehsaen - I'm guessing (read Captain Meme's post in the forum re: Oli and the future) that any technical work required in tweaking 1900 will be needed from a php coder on the site. Then any other modifications would need to happen from Nescio who was working on bringing across the variant to vDip.

Question regarding variant
In the variant Rat Wars, the rules state that some SC squares cannot be occupied by Arrow Rat. However, does that just mean when an arrow rat moves there it doesn't become that person's SC, or an arrow rat cannot move into that square entirely? Like, can you move an arrow rat on such a square just to prevent others from taking the SC?
