Help a Newbie
Hey guys! I was wondering if one of the experienced veterans has the time and patience to help me with getting better on these variants. I'm looking for a multi-day variety of two-player games and hopefully I learn how to get better.

Thanks,

Election of a man who has groped women and stiffed workers to be President.
I would suggest that a large part of the reason why Clinton lost is because of her dishonesty, a strong anti-establishment backlash and a perception of personal corruption.

However, I would like us to think about what we have done in electing Trump to be President.

Thank you to all the men and women who served not only on the front line, but back at home as well. They all did us a great service. Let us pay respects to front line soldiers on both sides as they were just men following orders and doing what they could for their country.

Thoughts on improving Rinascimento
Rinascimento is a horribly unbalanced variant. While I realise it is set in a historical setting and the powers at the time were not of the same strength, it is virtually unplayable for several of the smaller factions.

Ikaneko (854 D)

They don't have Norway, but they do have the Scilly Islands (The islands to their main bit of territory).

I like the idea with the addition of France but (my opinion) it looks unbalanced. There isn't enough territory's to move in and out of between the powers.
Ikaneko (854 D)
08 Oct 16 UTC
What would you recommend then? Mote territories?

Mote. Was that intended as sarcasm.

but either way, yes. More territorys on land, mainly Wales, Anglia and cornubia area. It dosnt look fair. Might play fair with diplomatic neighbors and preknowledge of boards flow and out comes.
Moving a couple SC could do the trick to. Cornubia (white) will have hard time.
Ikaneko (854 D)
09 Oct 16 UTC
OK. Mote was a typo. Thanks for the feedback! You'll be seeing a revised edition shortly. I might test it by holding a few gunboat games with my friends and then analyse the outcomes.

2 quick comments: It's not clear whether one of those sea areas connects with Pembrokeshire or not; and please do NOT keep that abomination of a territory that looks like a Northants which has rudely stuck part of its anatomy between Suffolk and Norfolk - it's never existed and doesn't serve any useful purpose IMO

Haven't looked over it in terms of balance yet, but one important thing in variants - avoid 4-way intersections or things that look like 4-way intersections. Ancient Med gets away with it by specifying very clearly in the rules what the intersections mean, but in general it's good practice not to use them.

I've circled the areas I spotted with this problem:

Hi Ikaneko, welcome to the site!
Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason why you want to rival Heptarchy?
Ikaneko (854 D)
09 Oct 16 UTC
That 'rivalry' bit was a bit of tongue in cheek. I'm more interested in what you think of the map itself. So, what feedback would you give?
Decima Legio (1987 D)
10 Oct 16 UTC
At a first glance of the map draft I would say that the player in Scotland is way more distant from the other powers. I'd say that the the player in Normandy is still too much favoured: nobody can contest him the SCs in the inland of France during the early stage of the game.
Also there are yet at least four 4-way intersections. They're source of doubt and preferrably ought be eliminated in advance. Else you keep them and you can take care to describe them in the variant page... but I warn you in advance, know that the 100% of the players won't bother to read the variant description before playing it, so I would recommend to keep it simple and avoid misunderstandings regarding the logistics.
GOD (1541 D Mod (B))
10 Oct 16 UTC
Well I always read the variant description and generally assume that my fellow players do likewise? :p
Ikaneko (854 D)
10 Oct 16 UTC
Are you basing this off the latest map, as I think I resolved those problems with four way intersections. I'll bring Scotland closer and make Flanders an army if that works.
Ikaneko (854 D)

Hello GOD, what do you think of my map (for the latest revision, see post 15). What feedback would you give?
GOD (1541 D Mod (B))
10 Oct 16 UTC
I am following your map developments and will comment more later, but that white English nation could be easily blocked from getting any SC in the first year at all, which is not optimal.
Decima Legio (1987 D)
10 Oct 16 UTC
My comment was based on your last map update, yes.
That was not the point, though.

The Variant page is composed by 100 variants nowadays.
3 of them are set on the British Isles.
HeptarchyIV, http://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=89
Celtic Britain, http://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=75
Anarchy in the UK, http://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=79
Together they sum up to the 1% in terms on games played on V-dip and 1,6% in terms of "popularity"
Although I do appreciate your efforts and your will to contribute to add a new variant... I'm not sure that a new variant of Britain would be a real added value to the website.

This being said, I am not "against" a new variant about UK. I just think that it's not worth the effort of designing ---> debugging ---> playtesting it. My point of view.
Good luck with your work Ikaneko, I hope that you will eventually prove me wrong.
G-Man (2204 D)

I am surprised how much I liked Heptarchy IV. It has great playability. Two reasons for that I think are the number and positioning of land territories. The sea territories are decent, but Sengoku Jidai has a really creative way of handling the sea terrirories that make it another really playable variant at this size, which I recommend referring to for ideas on how to structure sea territories: http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=27 . I would take one territory and work out how you think the nearby territories will make play interesting, and then work your way out to the rest of the map from there, e.g., consider London, the North Sea, Beligium, the English Channel, Picardy, Brest, the Mid-Atlantic, the Irish Sea, Wales and the powers with interest at the opening here, and how they work together and make the game really interesting; how they affect the balance of power in that area; how the navies and armies work together there...

I like balance, and tend not to like playing heavily imbalanced variants as much, but completely balanced variants tend to be boring. Some advantages and disadvantages for each power makes things more interesting (especially by mixing these up, e.g., one power is all fleets, one power could really use a second fleet but doesn't get it to start, one power has a chance to grab an extra neutral, one power has poor defense on one front... ), and a few -- perhaps stronger, or well-defensed or well-armed -- central powers can make things interesting for everyone.
G-Man (2204 D)
11 Oct 16 UTC
I neglected to mention my example on creating interesting playability by starting in one area and working your way out territory by territory was from the Classic Diplomacy map (and not yours).
Ikaneko (854 D)
11 Oct 16 UTC
OK, the general message is that the outer sea territories are too small if I extrapolate from Sengoku Jirai, and that a mixture of small littoral territories make for good play. That sounds achievable. I might couple that with moving Scotland down to leave the northern tertritories up for grabs. A Munich square would make for nice play, which is to say a centre with a lot of bordering territories. Opening up the board would be good. A larger question would be “Should I make the land territories smaller?”.
Ikaneko (854 D)
11 Oct 16 UTC
