NWO goes MAD
The current NWO game being run at Redscape incorporated new experimental rules for the nukes: MAD (nuclear strikes can trigger automatic nuclear response). Spring 2005 sees 9 nukes trigger 3 nukes which begat another 3 nukes. Yikes!

Diplomacy Simulator
Hi! I'm new here and I don't know if it was already discussed, but it would be nice to have some sort of simulator to test out moves. Sometimes the rules aren't that easy to apply and it's hard to understand what would happen in a very tricky and unique situation...

diplom.org down?
diplom.org used to be the centre of the online Diplomacy community. Even long past its prime it held tons of interesting resources, variant files, articles, etc. For the last few weeks I haven't had any luck loading the site. Does anybody have any idea what's up?

Luckily, most of it is backed up by the Wayback Machine, hopefully that never disappears: https://web.archive.org/web/20161020130534/http://www.diplom.org/

Diplomacy Supreme (WWIV Game) software bug
During the procession of moves this morning, the game experienced a software bug and about half an hour later the map came up with the phase length saying "Crashed". Apparently a mod/developer needs to look at it to fix it. Is there someone who can help us out?

Election of a man who has groped women and stiffed workers to be President.
I would suggest that a large part of the reason why Clinton lost is because of her dishonesty, a strong anti-establishment backlash and a perception of personal corruption.

However, I would like us to think about what we have done in electing Trump to be President.

SRG: Secret Service
First things first, this isn't actually a game yet, I was wondering about this as a special rules game and wanted to get some comments and suggestions back on it as well as work out some difficulties. Feel free to call it too complex or impractical. Rules will follow.
baky123 (1235 D)

Here are the rules that I have currently come up with:
Ok, so I was thinking of something like an Espionage SRG, where once every year (so they have to chose between spring and autumn) they can get their secret service or spies to perform an action. I was thinking of three different possible actions.

1) Counter-espionage
2) Sabotage
3) Implicate.

The desired action is sent to the GM. With Sabotage, you can select any unit on the board (eg Italian player chooses to sabotage the German army in Silesia, and if the owning country has not chosen to do counter espionage that turn then the selected unit is made to hold that turn rather than whatever other order was selected. (eg Germany had their secret service do nothing that turn, so their unit in Silesia must hold that turn rather than doing whatever it was previously ordered to do [Scenario 1]).

Had the German player instead opted to go with counter-espionage (CE) that turn, then the unit in Silesia would have done whatever it was originally ordered to do as CE blocks other country's actions against the player. [Scenario 2]

At the beginning of each turn a report is either sent to each player or put in the public chat box as to whether spy actions succeeded or failed. If it succeeded (like in the first scenario) then just the action and effect is reported (Someone sabotaged the army in Silesia so it had to hold), whereas if the controlling country had selected CE (like in Scenario 2) then the country name would also be put in the report (Italy attempted to sabotage the army in Silesia but failed.)

Finally, implicate is used to make it look like someone else used a plot (France implicates Italy, making it look like Italy attempted and failed to sabotage the German army in Silesia.) If the country on the receiving end (Germany) were to use CE, it would reveal this fake plot as if it were a real plot and would give a corresponding item in the report (Italy attempted and failed to sabotage the army in Silesia). If the target (Germany) didn't use CE, nothing would happen.

Those are the rules so far, but I have been informed by a higher power that it is not really possible to alter the orders at process time, so instead I was wondering if for example the player owning the unit (Germany) is told that the unit in Silesia must hold for the next turn.

Any ideas/thoughts/questions?

I think this could be a good game, but it sounds like you have some implementation issues to overcome. I do not think you can count on telling players what units they must hold after they have entered their moves, unless the game director pauses the game each season until all the "hold" directions have been followed. Also, you would need to allocate a certain amount of time for CE orders to be submitted before giving the "hold" directions to the players.

I am not sure what mods and game directors are able to do, but if they could pause each season at a specified deadline and adjust the orders before the moves are processed, the game could proceed much faster. For example, the phases could be 3 days, but with all moves considered final after 2 days, whether "ready" has been selected or not, so the mod or game director can pause the game after 2 days, lock out player order changes, make the necessary order adjustments, then force the processing of the moves.

I was wondering about whether something could be done, but it's still about whether or not the GM can change the orders. I'm not sure if they can. What I was more thinking about is perhaps if the player has to hold that unit the next turn, so the espionage would almost take place a turn ahead of the effects, but this would mean that the player could plan around not having that unit.

I am not sure what the GM can do either, a mod may be able to do more.
baky123 (1235 D)

but it would be better if you didn't need a mod to do it
bozo (2302 D)

I agree it would be better if you did not need a mod, but a mod may be necessary for the implementation to be practical.

What about making the delay in the season part of the game? For instance you could send the GM a Sabotage order in Spring 1901 and it would be enacted in Autumn 1901. Depending on how you write the rule you could either
1. have the order 'carry' with the unit until the following season (ie. Sabotage Warsaw in S901 would eventuate for the unit that was in Warsaw but now is in Galicia)
2. have to 'guess' where the targeted unit would be in the next season. (ie. ordering Sabotage Galicia in S901 would only succeed in A1901 if Warsaw moved and succeeded in taking Galicia...)

Is it possible to have a game with, say, a three day phase, but actually the phase length is only two days, and the final day is used to inform each player if they need to change any orders, ie there is an "extra" day at the end of each day to get all these extra stuff through. If someone fails to enter the orders in the first two days, they can only be allowed to enter all hold orders, as if they had NMRed. This game would require very honest players, and probably need to be a no stakes game.
baky123 (1235 D)

The trouble is that some players may change orders to take into account the unit having to hold, and there's no way to tell if they did. However, I did kind of like kaner's idea of having to guess, as it gives a bit more of a challenge. But to clarify kaner, are you still thinking of being able to issue sabotage orders during one of spring and autumn and have them enacted the following season (or just in spring and enacted in autumn)? It would be something of a compromise, but in terms of practical implementation it could be the best. Just to get an idea, who would be interested in maybe playing a prototype game of this on maybe a smaller map to keep it fairly fast, once the rules are finalised?

I'd be interested to see if we could get moderated games to give the GMs permissions to freeze orders at the prescribed deadlines, and then change orders as appropriate per special rules games' parameters.

Many years ago I played in and GM'd a few games called Insidious Insults and Creative Complements (IICC). The special rule was that if you wanted to attack another nation's units, you had to provide press containing an insult of that player/nation. Likewise if you wanted to support/convoy another nation's units, you had to provide press with a compliment of that nation. These requirements were madatory or the ordered unit had it's directions changed to "hold" by the GM. In some cases players were providing both insults and compliments on the same turn. Because the games were PBEM and hand adjudicated the special rules worked fine.

Naturally such game required thick skin, and some basic agreements to hold a modicum of civility. Of course fifteen years later the definition of what is and is not offensive has changed so much that this might not even be prudent. It was great fun though when all players were writing good press.
