1066 Tournament
As discussed in episode 23 of the Diplomacy Games podcast I'm thinking of putting together a 1066 tournament. Interested takers?

So how will it run exactly? I remember discussing this, but that wine must have gone to my head faster than I thought...

i would totally love to
I think the way we run it depends a little on the number of players. I saw it at a minimum being 3 players playing each other and taking turns with England, Normandy and the Norwegians. It could become 6 games if we did this format but 3 normal press and 3 gunboat games.

If we get 6 players all up I saw perhaps two groups, group A and group B. The winner of groups A & B would go to the final group round. Between groups A & B, the player with the 2nd most points overall would then make it in as the 3rd players in the final group round.
Open to the idea of just keeping it full press, just keeping it gunboat (either of these options means just 3 games in each group, we'd only go to 6 games in a group if everyone wanted a joint 3 games full press, 3 games gunboat.)
I might be interested if you'll put a link to the variant page so I can check it out.

That format looks interesting.

Here you go YCHTT.

OK. I'll join. You could also do a 9 player 2 round tournament.
For tie breakers, number of capitals followed by total SCs would work.

I'd join for a 9-player 2-round, but only for 6-match rounds, and preferably with the *same* comms method - you need 6 to have a proper 'every position' rather than just a rotation, since you need two games as any given nation to play against both permutations of opponents.
I like that idea mouse. 6 games is better than three.

If you have 7 players, you can have 7 games, in which each player plays every nation exactly once and plays against each other player exactly once.
I'd recommend playing gunboat because full press would result in too many 3-way draws.
By the way, I find Teaty of Verdun to be another interesting 3-player map for a tournament.

Mercy - and if there was a more balanced map similar to Duo, but for 3 players, that format would work.

Less so for 1066 with the starting unit advantage for England and the positional/fog advantage for Norway.

I'll be very rusty as I haven't played for almost 2 years, but I'm keen to get involved!
Cool, looks like we've got a few good folks and some consolidation on the format idea. Nice.

I'm clearly a long way out of the loop? What is the podcast you mentioned?

If we're doing gunboat I presume it'll be anon too. I think this is worthwhile to stop players ganging up on the leader of the group.

Amby & Kaner have a podcast called the Diplomacy Games Podcast. You can find it here: http://diplomacygames.com/

Episode 21 has to be my favourite. They had a really charismatic and just generally awesome guest on that one.
Mercy, 7 players on a 3 player map would not result in every one playing everyone else exactly once. 7 games means 14 opponents. So you might be able to mix it up so you played every one else twice but you would have to run 2 games at a time with one player getting a by. Also, it means you'd play every nation twice and one nation a third time.

It turns into a round robin tournament of sorts and becomes much too complicated and is also unbalanced as someone will get that third shot at the strongest nationality and someone else will be stuck with 3 times in the weakest nation.

I like the proposed groups of 3 with six games each and a final round with either 3 winners (9 players), or two winners and top runner up (6 players w/ wild card).

12 players could also be done w/ 2 wild cards playing 1,4,6(wc) and 2,3,5(wc) then a third round with winner and top runner up overall from both rounds so even if the top scorer from round 1 was in 4th place in round 2, he still might make the final round.

@YCHTT
I meant 7 games in total, not 7 games per player. My idea is this:
You have 7 players and 7 games in total. Each player plays in three of those games, and each player plays a different nation in all of those three. Per game, each player faces two opponents, so in total each player faces 2 x 3 = 6 opponents. These have to be exactly the 6 other participants of the tournament.

I have done this once before:
gameID=18870
gameID=18860
gameID=18867
gameID=18864
gameID=18868
gameID=18866
gameID=18878
Sorry, misunderstood what you meant.
There is still a flaw with the 7 player 7 game approach on unbalanced maps. There is no position reversal against equal opponents so the one who happens to get the better draw on a game filled with equals might get the worst draw in a game filled with lesser opponents giving him an advantage in the overall race over the guy who gets the worst position against the best opponents.
Battalion (2386 D)

What would you suggest instead, YCHTT? As far as I can see there will be an element of luck of the draw with any setup that doesn't have all players playing all other players in every permutation (which is clearly impractical - for 4 players that's 18 games each, for 5 players that's 36 games each, for 7 games it's 90 games each...). For example, although I like the idea of 9 players and 2 rounds that was floated above, you may be disadvantaged if you end up in a stronger pool in the first round.
For 3 players, it is 6 games total. Tat was the original discussion. Then every group of three adds another 6 games as a preliminary round and the players get seeded into a bracket based on their vPoints.
Battalion (2386 D)
31 Oct 17 UTC
With players with high vPoints grouped together, or with a range in each group?
Standard seeding. Top plays bottom and one in the middle on a three way game. So for 9 players, three groups:

1,6,9
2,5,8
3,4,7

Final round is the three winners.
Battalion (2386 D)
31 Oct 17 UTC
Sounds good to me. I think I probably prefer that to the 7 game approach (although I'm easily swayed...). There wouldn't have to be only one final round though - you could have three games comprising the top 3, middle 3, and bottom 3 to get a final ranking.

1900 for vDip: Progress Report (ongoing)
As mentioned in another thread, I've been working on the code and assets necessary to port Baron M. Powell's variant 1900 to vDip and/or webDip.

In order to keep myself accountable in some fashion to actually complete this task, and not just talk about it, I've created a small project plan where I can mark my progress.

Taking over Civil Disorders should be free of charge
Reasoning: the player who takes over a Civil Disorder is not just putting themself in a precarious position (as they must evaluate everybody's styles and strategies) but they are also saving the game's balance and fun.

In order to reward/incentive people to take more CDs, I believe that making it free of charge (rather than current 50% discount) would be for the best. Thoughts?

Cold War Tournament
I am looking to start a rated Cold War tournament consisting of group and knockout stages. Groups of 4 will face each other twice, once as each country. The top two (or three, pending interest) from each group will move on to the knockout stage, with each matchup lasting two games. Users will play as each country once. If tied 1-1, an additional two games are played until a winner is determined.

Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.
