The Modern UN Tournament
Information below
The variant is Modern Diplomacy II. . . with a twist. The ten nations form the UN, which leads to a number of changes. First, there are no solos by SCs. It will be decided by a UN vote. Each surviving nation has one vote for every capital they own. Capitals must be home supply centers and they will be designated by the nation before the first turn of each game has processed. The vote goes like this.

Each turn before the process nations will cast their votes. They may split their votes or cast them all for one nation or coalition. Votes may not be cast until the fifth Diplomacy phase of the game. Nations wishing to form a coalition to vote must announce this before the phase processes. In order to win, nations must gain 2/3 of the vote and coalitions must gain 3/4 of the vote. Coalitions may not exceed four nations. Players may choose to draw, concede, or cancel regardless of this, but solos may only be decided by UN vote.

Treaties: Nations may choose to sign protectorate, defense, and alliance treaties with each other for a period of time up to them. Treaties may not be broken during the duration of the agreement. All treaties MUST be made public. Violations will result in the removal of the offending player from the tournament.

UNRATED games. Thoughts?

I'm not sure that this is in the spirit of the United Nations, ha ha. But it sounds fun. Why not just make capitals the real-world ones? It would be easier to keep track that way.

We could also play the Europe 1939 variant with the League of Nations where all votes have to be unanimous and Switzerland is impassable.
I was planning that for when Versailles comes out.

Versailles is an awesome variant! I hope someone can figure out how to code it for play at VDiplomacy.

AE,I love the modern variant as well, and you may be on to something with a capital's based concept. However, the description of what you have fleshed out so far look too open to manipulation for crossgaming and/or metagaming purposes. Voting based victory games are generally a bad idea, and has a history of community destabilization. Also the no solo rule could be worked around by a player simly controlling enough capitals to control the vote, soloing anyway. This might not be a bad thing, but it seems contrary to your objectives.

I know that this is not what you're suggesting, but if you're interested in an unrated Modern gunboat tournament, I'd be down for that.

That sounds like a lot of fun.

I would prefer Europe 1939 over Legacy of Versailles.

Do we have the coding to implement the minor powers of Versailles by Martin Kennedy, anyway?

Unfortunately, not yet @JECE. I ain't sure the major/minor power stuff would be ideal for a League of Nations-based game anyway. Could add a bit too much complexity.

I am willing to port the official basic version of Versailles if the community wishes (power pairings are always pre-defined, so for example Italy always get Sweden, Britain always get Egypy etc).

Legacy of Versailles is a variant of my own that is set in 1939 Europe. Will be released sometime in the next weeks.

2 years ago on webdiplomacy I played a UN-style game where nobody was allowed to leave their starting borders (I think international waters were okay) without introducing and passing a bill that allows them to annex a certain territory. There was a starting set of rules that I can't quite recall, but I know the above one I mentioned was the most important. I believe any rule could be changed via a power introducing a bill, getting cosigners. and then passing it by majority. Always wanted to play something like that with people who would actually take it seriously, as our game had a few rulebreakers that we had to team up and destroy, although that did make it rather interesting as well. Maybe I'd be able to find that old forum post and get more details.

Enriador: I just prefer that Spain be a power. I know it was weakened by the civil war, but it's more realistic that way (and the war did help develop war preparedness). It's also just a bigger map. Sorry! I know you put a lot of work into your variants.

Interesting, I think we must work a little on the special rules.

It's cool @JECE, we all have our preferences. I think that 'Europe 1939' is a great map, and would work wonderfully under the rules @Argentinean proposed.
What changes do you have in mind?

I found the old webdiplomacy forum post with the UN style that they used, if anyone wants to see what they did. There’s so much material here that it could warrant its own thread, though...
Someone would have to control 2/3 or at least seven of the capitals to pass the vote themselves. Seven of ten is a big task. I am open to changes as this is just a rough idea. I don’t think it would open metagaming opportunities if players agree not to. That may sound naive but cheating takes all the fun out of winning.

I want to play a full press Modern tournament, but maybe we could play a Europe 1939 tournament at some point if the players want.

Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.

Imbalanced map?
It seems as if several maps need some balancing work. For example, England* v Turkey is skewed toward England, and in Rinascimento, the French are virtually at the hands of other players’ wills.

Hello, I have a problem. I am going away for a few days (tomorrow), and I don't know how to quit the game I am in. There are 36 players, so I cannot reasonably ask for all of them to pause --- besides, there isn't enough time --- so I am stuck.

Playing with fewer players
Hi all!

I know this is probably a noob question, but I need to resolve this issue: is it possible to start a game with fewer players than those normally expected? I tried it once with the Rinascimento variant, but the game didn't launch just because there weren't 12 players.
Thank you in advance!

If the "Gunboat", "Public Press", or "Per Rulebook" rules are employed, shouldn't the game be automatically "Anon" as well? If it weren't, then players could just PM each other, defeating the purpose.

Question about social norms for players
In a large game, a reliable player asked the mods to extend the game for Easter. The request was general and largely in the name of other player: "Hey guys, it's Easter, and in a big game, some people will probably be traveling to see family." The extension was granted, and requests like that are likely to be accepted.
