Padlock City
What's the deal with all the padlocks that have appeared throughout my games when viewed on the vDip homepage?

With all the available information it was rather easy to guess who is who in webDip in anon games (and it got abused enough to force this change). So it should be even easier to "cheat" here on vDip with fewer active players.
So far it worked for them. That's why it's very likely that we will keep this the same here.
Caerus (1470 D)

I absolutely agree with CoxBox. It is a very neat feature in Gunboat Games, as it is a form of communication.

@Oli, I was confused as to why we were solving a problem that no one seemed concerned about, but you explained that each variation from WebDip creates more work for you. I personally prefer to have this information available, so that I can encourage others to play, so that I can encourage others to change their mind, or so that I can ready up if everyone seems to have made up their mind and is therefore uninterested in my suggestions. Furthermore, I fear this change won’t address any of the stated problems above (still complaining that people will ready up, still annoy people who haven’t responded to press, and people will still NMR).

I appreciate all of the information you are willing to allow me to use, and I am sad to see a piece of that information gone, but I will adapt my play, just like the people on this site adapted when PPSC became the norm or when rated players became targets, I just didn’t want to see change without reason. But I, like many of us here, remember the dark ages without the great and powerful Oli, and I will happily make sacrifices to make this site easier for you to maintain this site.
Caerus (1470 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Side note, I am actually against it as a default option, but my arguments involve the “WTA vs PPSC” debate which I do not want to invoke here.

Since today, I cannot see any more, in the game that I am playing, the information that was :
Last seen : X hours, Y minutes.
Instead, there is nothing.

I understand that it may be useful in an anonymous game but what would be the purpose in a non-anonymous game ?
With that information, which was availbale to everyone, I could see, for example that player A had checked the game and had, as a consequence, possibly read the latest message that I had sent to him. Now, with that change, I have much less "contact" with the game which I find now less "alive".
Knowing when a player checked the game for the last time has many advantages. For example, if I want to write to two different players and I see that one of them is online and not the other one, it allows me, in order to improve the effectiveness of our communication, to decide to write first to the player who is online. Do I need to explain all the advantages of knowing who is online, or not, in a communication platform ?

I find that very annoying, very disagreeable, especially because I never play anonymous games. I indeed enjoy the social aspect of the game and I appreciate to play with people rather than against countries. Why would a change possibly made for anonymous games impact non-anonymous games ?

Could we please have, at least in non-anonymous game, the option to play games the "old way", meaning like it was until today ?

Just a couple quick notes on this for everyone.

If you're in a game with the locks you'll see "At least 1 person still needs to enter orders" so reminders can still be given, just in global press.

Tournament directors/Game Directors can now see through Anon status so they can still maintain games and still see the green/grey checks to keep tournament games moving along nicely.

There's 1 more piece of code in a PR that I've sent to Oli to fix the locks not showing in message tabs besides "global".
Enriador (1507 D)

I agree with @Retillion that non-Anon games should show the last login.

Otherwise, I am happy with this recent change. Anonymous games are supposed to make a player's information (including whether they sent/readied orders or not) anonymous.
bo_sox48 (937 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
There were instances on webDip where users would look through non-anon games and players' profiles and put little tidbits of information together to break anonymity in their anonymous games with other high profile players. We blocked all of those avenues and all of the other workarounds to in-game anonymity. Using a non-anon game to break anonymity in another game was a real problem for us and I suspect that some users have used that information to their advantage here too.
Caerus (1470 D)

@Bo Sox, was your comment in defense of the changes to the Non-anon games?
Enriador (1507 D)
17 Jun 18 UTC
Feedback: the white bar where "All countries have entered orders/At least X country still needs to enter orders!" is quite distracting and does not marry well with the classic vDip interface.

Can the white bar be made transparent somehow? I think having it in the middle rather than in the left corner is a great advancement, by the way.
bo_sox48 (937 D)

I'm not here to defend or attack anything, Caerus, but for those who don't see why non-anon games are also impacted, hopefully that offers an explanation.

I think it's rather a shame that metagamers push us to this, but, well, thems the breaks I guess. It'd be nice if it was optional, even if it was the default.

@bo Sox, sorry. I wasn’t clear. I meant to ask if your statements were in reference to the non-anon game effects. I didn’t mean to assume where you come down on the issues.

@a_mercurial_git I agree, that it is sad. Though I was Rocked by an article that skyrock shared where Richard Sharp outright brags about some dirty tricks he played. (http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/god/twelve.htm). Unrelated to the current conversation, but it is an interesting perspective.

@all- Oli has spoken and this is the way it will be. I don’t like it, and I dread how closely tied we are to WebDip, as I have heard nothing good about the community there, But I love this community and I’ll play the game regardless of the changes we make. I’ll adapt just like we’ve had to adapt to every change that led to this point.
Caerus (1470 D)
18 Jun 18 UTC
Honestly, will probably clinched it for me is: it’s harder to not have the padlocks. As much as I don’t like them, They’re probably not worth extra effort for Oli to get rid of them. I am sad that the environment at webdip is so toxic they need it, which necessitates that we have it, too. Oh well.
Caerus (1470 D)

@Caerus ... no worries. I just want to make sure that the issues are fully understood. I do not play here and rarely come online here and I trust Oli and the rest of the team here to run this place well, and I know that they do. I have no stake in it, but as an administrator on webDip, I don't want to sit idly while these changes are mischaracterized as something malicious instead of something intended to clean up a problem. The problem exists here too, you know. It's not as if this site is immune from immoral gameplay.

As far as your inhibitions about webDip, you should put that judgment to the test and cross over to the dark side sometime. It's not the devilish place that a lot of the people on this site that bash it think it is. Hell, there are a lot of users that speak out against webDip over here that haven't been on webDip in years. In a few rather loud instances, that isn't even their choice. I am quite confident that that crowd that tells you those things has already made up their mind, and no matter what I say they'll still tell you the same things, but you should not close your mind to webDip without even giving it its fair due. There are countless users that use both vDip and webDip and are more than happy with both, and there are aspects of each site that the other just can't match.

webDiplomacy and vDiplomacy share resources and use the same open source code, so both sites often have similar features. We work together on a lot of projects and it is mutually beneficial. Regardless of how you might feel about webDip, though, you don't need to "dread how closely tied" the two sites are. It's not as if webDip is just tangling vDip in its horrible, monstrous tentacles, never to release it from our grasp. We work together, and neither site has any obligation to match code and features down to the letter. That is just flat out wrong.

I can confirm that the breaking of anonymity is a problem on this site, too. I have played in an anonymous game where I managed to find out the identity of multiple other players, and as a joke, I started calling them by their player names rather than by their country names in private messages. The new site changes will definitely help my self-control. Thanks to all the developers!

I think it's a good idea to remove the banner at least from all the non-anon games, as they do not add any information.

About missing the deadline: I'm thinking about an extra space right above the current notification bar where all "No orders submitted at all"-games get a special place (and maybe a turn-timer for each game). At the moment all notifications go to the same place, regardless if they are about a new ingame-message, PM, modforum-post or the orders are saved, but not submitted.
This should make it more visible.
Also I'm thinking about a visual clue that orders are changed, but not saved. But this is a javascript-problem and I'm quite bad at javascript.
Damn, could've just sniped someone in a game if it wasn't for those padlocks ;-)

It seems that in some games I can see the order status by being "in the game". It shows padlocks in the overview but if I click the game I see the status. Also peculiar is that if I click a certain power to send press that powers status is a padlock n the list below and all others are normal order status. And the power who I'm pressing is only padlocked in the overview below, not at the status bar on the top of the page. Not sure if I made this clear :)
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

There is a fix for that already on webdip, but the code is not available at Github, so I'm waiting a few days for implementation.

1900 for vDip: Progress Report (ongoing)
As mentioned in another thread, I've been working on the code and assets necessary to port Baron M. Powell's variant 1900 to vDip and/or webDip.

In order to keep myself accountable in some fashion to actually complete this task, and not just talk about it, I've created a small project plan where I can mark my progress.

Taking over Civil Disorders should be free of charge
Reasoning: the player who takes over a Civil Disorder is not just putting themself in a precarious position (as they must evaluate everybody's styles and strategies) but they are also saving the game's balance and fun.

In order to reward/incentive people to take more CDs, I believe that making it free of charge (rather than current 50% discount) would be for the best. Thoughts?

Cold War Tournament
I am looking to start a rated Cold War tournament consisting of group and knockout stages. Groups of 4 will face each other twice, once as each country. The top two (or three, pending interest) from each group will move on to the knockout stage, with each matchup lasting two games. Users will play as each country once. If tied 1-1, an additional two games are played until a winner is determined.

Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.
