London vDip players?
Calling London Diplomacy fans... we need your help! Trying to track down from the British Library some 1970's articles in the old school mag Games & Puzzles about our great game. Any locals who can help with a little research in the Reading Room? Thanks :-)

Crashed Europa Renovatio Games
At least two games of the new Europa Renovatio variant have had problems and crashed, although so far most of these crashes have been resolved. This is the first time I've encountered this issue here at vDip. How concerned should we players be about this?

This is really a message for mods. .. but I am not getting any response in the ModForum. I have been unable to load orders in the above game for a number of days now .. and am receiving increasingly threatening messages about missing turns and a possible ban. I can't communicate with any of the other players in the game. Does anyone know what is going on?

"Theoretical" Game
So there's a map called Fubar (https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=39). Let's say I created a game called "HA! Pranked!" where it was choose your own country (So I choose the big one), and then I make the SC count to win 8 (greater than any other country has, except the big one which starts with 10). 5 other people are foolish enough to join the game. Would I just win automatically then?
ubercacher16 (2196 D)

I say do random countries.
Mercy (2131 D)
08 Aug 19 UTC
I presume you would automatically win, yes. I believe there was a player once who did things like that; creating games that he theoretically couldn't lose. For example, he would create Germany vs Russia games in which he picked Russia and set the victory condition to 6 SC's.
BobMcBob (1281 D)

I'm no expert, but the victory might only be declared at the end of Autumn. I'm not sure how the system would deal with this, you'd have to get one of the programmers in or something.

Or maybe we can do a test run... unranked.
Sky_Hopper (365 D)

Fubar was never a particularly well-designed variant to begin with; Fatflap can win with optimal play in most cases.
Mercy (2131 D)
09 Aug 19 UTC
Challenge accepted, Sky_Hopper. If we create a game where you are Fatflap and I control the other five players (or at least I am one of the other five players and the rest is listening to my advice), I think I can reliably beat you, or anyone else for that matter.
ItsHosuke (1143 D)

I think I’m siding with mercy on this one
I strongly side with mercy on this one, but it goes against the idea of the game to have one person play the rival 5 countries. Eventually someone is always going to betray the others for personal gain, likely too early, which gives Fatlap an opportunity to come back and destroy everybody else
ScubaSteve (1234 D)

I think FUBAR looks like a very interesting variant. I'd play it.

Not to open a whole new can of worms, but some of the country "names" in that variant are not acceptable.
ScubaSteve (1234 D)

That is true. It shouldn't be too difficult to change.
ubercacher16 (2196 D)

That's sort of the point of the variant. It is absolutely vulgar in every sense of the word. I say keep it as is or remove it entirely.

Why though, let people who are interested play it. If you don't like the variant, just stay away from it, where is the problem?

@Mercy: What I'm saying is that cooperation between the other five players is extremely difficult to achieve. Especially in gunboat.

Even with full press, for Fatflap to lose without misplaying horribly requires self-sacrificing levels of teamwork from certain minors, which cannot reasonably expected in anything other than a full co-op game.

Is anyone interested in creating a 1v1 version of this variant?
ingebot (2014 D)

Fatflap is easy to beat if everyone plays rationally. The minor player knows that they must go all out against fatflap immediately (and anyways they can only attack fatflap mostly). Faced with this scenario, fatflap faces setbacks regardless of his tactical ability. The hope for fatflap is to either lure one of the other players to help him, or that one of the other players starts to believe that Fatflap's time is over it's time to think beyond him, stabbing one of the others (also, the knowledge that sooner or later someone will start thinking this way will surely also limit other players' play against Fatflap before then). This gives Fatflap a chance to come back. I'd say it is actually under full press when Fatflap has a greater chance of convincing one of the others to look beyond himself.
Mercy (2131 D)
12 Aug 19 UTC
I largely agree ingebot, but the advantage that the minors have under full press is
1) If the tactical skill of them varies, this allows them to discuss tactics, which is useful. In Sky_Hoppers game, some players made irrational moves, which could have been prevented.
2) Even if all the players are tactically skilled, the two northern minor powers need press to coordinate. Even at the first turn they are playing a guessing game against Fatflap and hence cannot predict each other's moves with certainty without press.

Sealanes Question
Say I am in the Sealane territory of X SW, and I’m attacking an adjacent Y sea territory, but the Y itself not Y SW/N etc. And I support myself in, can the Y territory retreat into my exposed X sea territory, despite me attacking from X SW?

Move Didn't Go Through
I was looking for clarification from the Mod team as to why a certain unit was not dislodged in a gunboat game with 1.5 day phases, so I sent a message in the Mod forum yesterday morning. I haven't received a response and the next phase of the game is about to go through. What is the proper action in this situation? Should I vote extend and hope for a last-minute extend? Thanks for advice.

Changes to make PPSC better
Currently, the PPSC system rewards points in a solo. It has a number of perverse effects on gameplay. In the subsequent post(s), I will outline changes that could reform PPSC and reduce its detrimental impact.

Google Translate Game
Hello everyone! I am looking for six other players to join a game of Classic(probably, another variant if more want to play), public press, where every player must send messages after putting them through several other languages and then back into English.

I am open to suggestions on exactly which languages and how many there should be.

Decompressive Backseat Orchidectomy Restart
For those that were in this cancelled game (over the technical gaff beyond our control), I’ve recreated the game as Decompressive Bilateral Backseat Orchidectomy. Message me, G-Man, for the password. This is just a restart for the same group of players that had already been playing this game. So, no newcomers please.

Conceding/Withdrawing from a game
Sorry if this is a well-flogged dead horse, but I've looked in the 'Help' section and can't seem to find an answer to this. Is it possible to concede a game - I don't mean voting for a concede result, but for a player to unilaterally withdraw from the game deliberately?

Why can't you view anything besides the public chat in archives?
Look I understand why you can't watch it during the game, since you could Pm players the details, but after a game has ended, I want to be able to view alliances, deals, and other things that you just couldn't see in the normal chat.

Manifest Destiny map issue
There seems to be a mistake in the Manifest Destiny map (fleets can move between one particular sea region and an inland region, which isn’t documented as being intentional and seems to just be a problem). Is the forum the right place to report these sorts of issues?
