Any European Basketball Fans?
The NY Post lists Victor Wembanyama at 7'5" and only 210 pounds. He clearly seemed to want to go to San Antonio, which might be a sign of maturity and intelligence while now seeming a metaphysical certainty. Superficially, he looks to have a VERY narrow frame from shoulders through the hips. I do not associate my gut reaction to the look of him with physical durability or long careers.

Caspian Sea in Modern variant
Question about the Modern variant: can a fleet on the north coast of Iran move into the Caspian Sea? The original variant description states that the Rostov canal is the *only* way to get a fleet into the Caspian Sea. But I find it rather odd that a fleet on the Iran north coast would not be allowed to go there (I have confirmed that building a fleet there is possible, that is not my question).

New Divided States Map
I felt like making a Divided States map which I named “Well, rip us” (for obvious reasons). If anyone who is reading this hasn’t joined, they should as this could be really fun.

Etiquette of readying your moves
I’ve notice that a lot of people stop readying their moves—even retreats—when the game isn’t going their way any more. Is there a strategic explanation for this or is just to pout?

Chinese 2020-2021 Diplomacy League is so exciting!
The Chinese Diplomacy League games have been in "New games" for two years..? -_-
Unless I'm missing something about the Chinese way of playing Diplomacy, maybe it could be a good thing to delete these games? :)

Minor power variant dev-team
Who is willing or capable to join to make a new variant called "Minor power"?
Flame (1073 D)
19 Feb 23 UTC
The thing is that at the very start some countries has fixed builds but other powers can chose their type of builds.
The second difficult point is:
There are major and minor powers on the board. We should do the code which will let minor powers to bet a half of a bid to enter the game.

The homepage of the variant:

Variant is based on a standard diplomacy game board.
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))

That sounds very interesting. It’s a bit like the FUBAR variant but much more balanced. Or Rinascimento without neutral SCs.
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))

Minor issue that I see is Turkey, it might get locked in entirely from turn one.
hakureimarisa (1498 D)
19 Feb 23 UTC
Sounds fun, and can't wait to play as Serbia... and get crushed!

Btw for the issue of Turkey, is it possible to let the seven choose their builds too?
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))
19 Feb 23 UTC
Well the whole point of *not* letting them choose their builds is not making them even more powerful beyond starting out three times the strength of their neighbours.
Flame (1073 D)
19 Feb 23 UTC
@hakureimarisa if it will be so England will always chose to build 3 fleets at the start. So rules don't let majors to chose their builds.
hakureimarisa (1498 D)
20 Feb 23 UTC
Ouch, I missed England. A stuck Turkey is far much better than dead France, Belgium, Holland and Norway. My bad XD

And another idea. To replace the half-bid for one-province minors, and to balance the issue of Turkey.

We add a Bidding Phase to the start of the game. Players receive a certain number of tokens respectively and they bid for the country to play as. Much like that of Greek Diplomacy, just let them bid for countries instead of centers.
Then some can get multiple countries to play while some get none. So then there's gotta be a Selection Phase. In this phase people with more than one country must choose one to play with, while the unlucky randomly get a country at the end of it.
Or if people don't like the idea of "no luck for once and I'm doomed", we can do the bidding-selection thing for some more times. The problem is that these repetitions can mean a boring and prolonged starting.

I think that it always makes sense to port variants as designed, maybe with changes that the original variant author would have liked to make. Other changes would be new variants.
JECE (1534 D)
20 Feb 23 UTC
As to the bidding, the coding should already exist. Once upon a time, at least on webDip, when you joined a game in progress (took over a 'great power' in civil disorder), you had to bet (D) by function of how many supply centers you would take over. In fact, you can still see that figure on vDip here after instances of "worth:"):
https://vdiplomacy.net/gamelistings.php?gamelistType=Open%20Positions

Of course, that would be closer to betting a third of what the great powers bet, not half of what great powers bet (Russia throws the calculation off slightly), but I would prefer that players bet a third anyway.
Flame (1073 D)

@JECE, that makes sense. I mean the idea to pay a third.

But I ask help in the following tasks:
1. Major powers should have fixed builds (this time all powers can chose their builds in the pre-game phase)
2. Minor powers should bet 1/3 of the full stake to enter the game.

Flame (1073 D)

The variant is almost ready to go. But what we should do with Serbia? The only power which can't build a fleet for the first 2 winters. So, we can do such tricks:
1) Add unit-transformation option to the variant;
2) Simply make Albania as a power with SC on a board not Serbia.
3) Do nothing
JECE (1534 D)
12 Mar 23 UTC
Port the variant as designed, right?
Flame (1073 D)
12 Mar 23 UTC
@JECE. So you advise to release the variant as author wants it to be. (with original rules)?
JECE (1534 D)

Yeah, I think that that is best practice. You can always release a different version of the variant later! This is just my opinion, though.

I mean the special fixed builds for certain powers.

Airplane units
Several years ago, I played a Dip game that I could not fully recall. Not the people I played with, the power I played as, or the exact changes to the rules. All I could remember is that the map played on involved countries all over the globe; that, alongside armies and fleets, it featured aerial units (and even nukes)

Hey all, just wondering if we have any baseball fans here and if so what are your thoughts as your team starts playing games. I'm a die hard Minnesota Twins fan and am eager to get the season underway. The off season was filled with big money moves and I guess we'll see if those will pay off for the teams that went " all in " and spent.

Has anyone ever played diplomacy in school?
I know I myself was ever able to, but some relatives did when they were in school. But perhaps some of the older players here played diplomacy in their history classes. I'm curious if anyone here has and if they have any cool stories to go with it? And maybe it's still used as a learning tool today yet even.

How do excused NMRs work?
So on a game I was playing in, it says something around the lines of "1 excused NMR / regain after 5 turn(s) / extend the first 1 turn(s)". So it leads me to believe that you get an excused NMR back after 5 turns, and wouldn't go into civil disorder.
