Is Norway Undervalued in 1066?
Something I notice when playing 1066 (v2) is that England and Normandy always do battle, and Norway usually has a lot of leeway to mop things up. I guess the larger size of the North Sea spaces give the illusion that Norway is farther away, but in reality, it's just two spaces away just like Normandy.

Germany still has over 20 SCs, and Italy looks like it's going to overrun. We could use a German player to keep things balanced.

Rational Moves Test
You guys could really use some sort of test to license people to play games in. It's annoying when irrational players ruin the game for rational players by allowing third players to win after overrunning them.

Does Drawing in WTA Backfire?
I was wondering if the logic behind WTA draws isn't necessarily reliable. Draws allow people to make alliances, and instead of drawing against the solo winner, they simply draw among themselves instead of pursuing a solo victory. Is there a way to disable drawing so this doesn't happen?

NWO
Is anyone interested in a CRAZY and HUGE world variant?
Tomahaha (1170 D)
07 Oct 13 UTC
Hi Guys
A lot of people here seem to really love my WW4 variant (you play it more here than anywhere else combined) and I have seen a few mentions about another one of my big whole world games, New World Order (NWO)
It has never been played here and maybe never will since it is designed as a PBEM type game and is not yet computer programmed, I am not sure if it can be done due to the added "Wing" and "Nuclear" units. Yes, nuclear bombs! The game also is won by a coalition vote and is not balanced in the least. Some (many?) will find the game not to their liking due to these changes. Some nations have tremendous advantages while others are doomed to fail and when the nukes start to fly, it really devolves into a stupid anarchy. All this putting the game down yet it has a rabid following and really can be fun in some twisted way!

The game can not be hosted here on Vdip but is forming now on Redscape. Our two communities seem to be getting along quite well with a lot of cross membership. The games over there are of a PBEM format (play by email) and as such, we really are different animals playing the same hobby so I am not trying to "poach" members, it's a hobby we all enjoy and cross memberships are great! You guys here have no doubt got more members from there as well from this mutual awareness!

Anyways, if you are interested, the note sent to me by the gentleman hosting the game is as follows. If interested, go to Redscape
http://www.redscape.com/?sid=ae526f43f5690749c5fdc3e5a641dc05
under the"Forum Games" tab you will find the NWO section.
........................................................
Some of you know I was toying between running an Explore game and an NWO game. Now that we have more than 50 players getting back into the PBEM diplomacy swing again, I thought it would be good to give NWO a shot. It's been many years since we have had a full or nearly full NWO game run.

For those new to Redscape: NWO is 1000% better as a PBEM variant. The auto-run website versions are quite honestly sub-par compared to this. Trust me!

Couple of things:

1) The game will not run until late October, early November, for several reasons, which I won't get into here. Primarily, though, I want everything to settle down in Redscape Games to make sure that everyone has the time to play the game that they need.

2) I'd like to get an idea of how many players we'll have so I can design and balance the map. If you're interested, just send me a quick email saying you're in.

3) Please, please indicate what size of power you'd like: large, medium or small.

4) THE TWIST! Not 100% sure what the twist will be yet, although I am working it out now. There will be something new. I am looking for a few good men who are willing to take a risk and take on the role of the twist, if it becomes needed. The ideas I have in mind will be the equivalent to somewhere in between a medium and a large power. So let me know if you're interested in being the guinea pig.

Note: You must, must, must have experience in NWO to play these powers. I'm sorry this is exclusive but the twist could conceivably ruin the game for everyone if the players taking it on aren't up to the task.

For those unaware of what NWO is, it is a world variant of diplomacy based both on conquest and social interaction. I'll freshen up the rules and send them out to everyone when the game is closer to starting. Unfortunately, I'm on a train right now and they block my internet access to large images or videos, so I can't link a map. But if you google "NWO map", you'll see the starting map for Beer and an Airline, the most recent run of NWO on this site.

Once again, for those interested in playing, just send me a quick email indicating your interest. Cheers!

The basic games link:
http://www.freewebs.com/tomahaha/newworldorder.htm
Should you check this out you will also see a link to a simplified game. This game being hosted by David and not myself, I do not know what he plans on adding or subtracting from the game (and he has some new twists that I do not know anything about so they are also obviously not listed on this game link)

should you be interested, I would suggest you post your interest here, (do not contact me, I have nothing to do with the running of this game except for playing in it as an unknown mid to small power). It might be a good idea to post a power size request and your email so he can contact you.

A word of caution, this game is NOT balanced, some players have huge advantages and others are almost doomed to failure, many powers WILL be eliminated early! It also tends to devolve into a bit of foolish anarchy with nuclear bombs going off all over the world! Some will find the game incredibly stupid (hey, I designed it and I find it stupid myself!) but damn, does it have a big following of people who just love the game for some really odd reason and you know what, it IS fun in a crazy way!

Why can't it be hosted here I would love to play it through vdip because the interface is so smooth
drano019 (2710 D Mod)

Darkarus -

Vdip doesn't have the necessary coding to handle the coalition style victory conditions, nor is it capable of handling more than 2 units types (this game has 4 if I read the rules right). So basically, it can't be hosted here because it's impossible. From what I remember, recoding vdip to be able to play a game like this would be a nightmare.

Ah got it thank you it is a bummer though
Tomahaha (1170 D)
07 Oct 13 UTC
no bummer at all, simply say you want to play. The only difference is you send your orders to a human GM and he sends out / posts the results. And in such a "different" game, you have the added benefit of getting to converse with the GM of the game, asking questions and such is no problem!

Sorry, I did not see the info above! I would be interested in a medium sized power but I would not mind playing a small one either.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
07 Oct 13 UTC
post on the referenced place, not here as I am not running the game. I can't answer how nations will be assigned exactly but I do know the superpowers are only given to those who have played before, are reliable and are known to be communicative with others. The mid sized players a bit less so, first timers are usually assigned the smaller powers. But while small, a little guy (if he survives) has great "value" in voting groups, he allows for fewer votes being required to win and most every game will include a smaller guy to help make the win more do-able. The game gets crazy with the nukes but do not underestimate the power of the vote, the game always has a political game within the military game and as such, simple brute dominance will often bite you in the ass! (and is designed to be the case, the politics of the game is quite fun if you allow it to be)

go to Redscape and sign up, I think we need about 50 players (heck, I don't even remember and I designed the damned game) already he is over 20 after only a day or two by private email only.

Imagine how long and how near-impossible it would take to find players to join the game. And when the game finally starts, just think of all the civil disorders that would occur. Chaotic. I don't even think more than 2 games of Chaos and Chaotopi have been completely filled.

We get WW4 games with 34 players started frequently on this site. Getting a 50 player game going amongst the players of two different websites shouldn't be that hard.

Tomahaha (1170 D)

if you want to join then go to Redscape and do so. As far as filling the game, we used to play it quite often and I even filled one game in 1 day! and this game is already nearing being filled as well (not yet so do jump!) The game being a PBEM (same as here only orders sent to a human GM) it has longer time between orders, coupled with the GM interaction and nudging those who forget, AND the way the game ends in a vote, it does not go THAT long so NMR's are not a major concern. FYI, the game normally goes anywhere from 8 to 15 game years. usually around a dozen or so-ish

Sounds great Tomahaha. I checked out adapting NWO when I started throwing around my initial ideas about a nuclear diplomacy variant (see http://www.vdiplomacy.com/forum.php?threadID=36542&page-thread=1#threadPager).

The coding side of things has pretty much sidelined that project as no-one here we're aware of (except Oli) has the php skills required, but he's way too busy at the moment.

This is purely out of interest. Add your variant of choice below, or if it is already on the list add a +1 to it. For me it would be:

I cannot get onto labdip on my computer, it just says "Error triggered: require_once(variants/Carthage/variant.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory.

This was probably caused by a software bug. The details of this error have been successfully logged and will be attended to by a developer."
