Suggested Feature
Larger maps make it possible that players face stalemate lines while other areas of the map remain dynamic. If these players have a large number of units (as is likely if stalemate lines have formed), it requires the repetitive entry of exactly the same orders. May I recommend that a button is created which allows you to 'Enter the same moves as last time'? There's no reason that one or two moves shouldn't then be modified afterwards.

ID#19708 looking for replacement. "The last war before we invade aliens"
Map is WWIV. I'm the Sichuan empire, with 24 supply centers, 19 units, no powerful enemies of consequence, and current leader. Progressing to around 27 centers soon, most probably. However, I have school soon so I need a replacement. See http://vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=19708

hey oli and the mods I have a quick question.
My friends and I are thinking about doing a livestream in December when we all are finally together.
I was wondering if they could make their own accounts so we could all play a 4 player only map.
They won't play any other games but the ones we make for the stream and they won't play or join any of my personal games.
So basically its a free for all between 4 good friends. What could go possibly wrong?:)

I have a couple of rules questions regarding variants.
With variants that say they do not allow for a draw, is that the case? Do those formats not have stalemate lines, or how do those games resolve if a stalemate is reached.

Middle-East variant
I've started work on a variant of the contemporary Middle-East, but as I'm not an expert at balancing variants, I was wondering if someone can give me some insight into how to make it fair?

http://oi61.tinypic.com/zuf89j.jpg is a draft version.

Putting aside the urge to chastise the phrase of the day, "disproportionate use of force", the best way to design a new map/variant is to make sure that all nations have multiple options. Forget the trolling nonsense about whether a nation appears stronger than another. The objective in creating a Diplomacy game is into only to give nations a chance to grab an open supply center and get builds in the first year. This of course is the mad rush that players fall into in the game, pausing their commitment to diplomacy until after they 'get them some builds'. They best maps are ones that encourage negotiations most all (nominally seven) players. One of the great things about the standard map is the critical opening moves that need to be discussed, such as English Channel, Burgundy, and Black Sea. Will there be bounces there? Will the be negotiated and planned bounces, or will a DMZ arise? Will someone break the deal on the first turn? Will Austria and Italy go to war immediately or will they both demonstrate trust along the Trieste/Venice border? Will England posture to put it's army into Norway? Will Russia counter that by Sending Moscow to St. Petersburg? Will Turkey send an army into Armenia? That's what gets people talking.

Talking is what makes a Dip game great. I love maps, and my strengths are in tactics. But the game is not chess. It involves multiple players, and multiple relationships. Create a map that gives nations several option to pursue based on their negotiations. Creates something that puts difficult decisions right up front. At the same time allow for flexibility in the game as it moves past the opening few seasons. One of the feature of a great variant/map is that there are options and opportunities for alliance shifts in all phases of the game. Tray to avoid scenarios were the four corner powers have no incentive to do anything but rush the middle. Finally, set victory conditions that allow the map to explore it's potential.

I love the idea, but you should consider to put Egypt completely out (because either way, it can and will only attack Israel). Instead, you could add the Kurds, or the Islamists in Syria and Iraq.
In general, I think this map is way too simple to display the problems of the middle east...how about making it like the crowded variant, with lots of states?
Decima Legio (1987 D)

I concur with GOD about the position of Egypt.

I would suggest to split the cylician sea. It does share borders with too many provinces (and too many scs as well) compared with the others sea areas.

In general I suggest to avoid self-sufficient SCs like Cyprus. Every SC is expected to have at least two bordering areas.
If you leave it that way, one day Defiant and Fischfix may join a Midddle-East game, and eventually Fischfix could be happy to survive with a single SC in Cyprus and consequently set Defiant ablaze once again...

I shall die when I'll see a ppsc vs wta debate again.

Anyway, go forward Synapse, this site misses a middle-east variant.
Tomahaha (1170 D)

I did not look at your link yet (but will soon) a few very general things. All players need options. Both early and longer term options on who to attack and where to move. It works best if players need to gamble at least some. Also very important is CONFLICT you want to try and design it into the map in multiple areas. First year as well as several turns in. Making centers equidistant from two or more players as well as their possible or probable areas of growth. Manage these (easier said than done!) And you have a winner on your hands.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
04 Aug 14 UTC
ok, I checked the game and here are SOME impressions
as mentioned, Egypt has but one choice and must attack Israel, that must be changed.
Actually, you have a lot of work to go.
Iran is in a similar position
You have too few sea zones, you need more neutrals spaced better
Arabia should be brought more into play
and one bad map mistake, Cyprus simply can not exist in the middle of another space. you need at least two spaces adjacent to any other and even then, I would recommend at least 3. Cyprus simply can not stay like it is, that is completely unplayable.

But while I sound negative (yeah, it is) this takes time and honestly, I know of many attempts at a Mideast variant and never saw a good one yet. The region is difficult, fleets are tough to make important and it becomes too army dependent ...maybe use an airforce unit in some way? Air power in the Mideast is huge. Rules changes such as air power and maybe even missile power?

Keep plugging away!!!
Tomahaha (1170 D)
04 Aug 14 UTC
oh, fyi, I started developing a Mideast game many years ago and gave up myself. I was more critical of my own efforts than I was on yours. I couldn't do it so this is no me being holier than though by any means! I would LOVE to see you crack the problem and maybe rules changes can be the answer?

and more, regarding fleets, to make them more useful and important add the suez canal and all of Arabia so you can also bring in the Red Sea and Persian gulf. A bit more of Africa and it's more of a greater middle east, adding these areas is quite acceptable to such a variant!
champ11228 (775 D)

I would add Syria and Saudi Arabia to give more options.
Synapse (814 D)
04 Aug 14 UTC
I will add Saudi, but Syria is in so much turmoil it can't constitute a serious power, and is more suitable to being neutral.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
04 Aug 14 UTC
Try to allow some flow around each power and not force them to travel through others. Iran for example is stuck and with so very few neutral centers, he has to immediately go to war...no time to maneuver and "dance" around. Maybe a larger map area, more spaces with many being neutrals. What you currently have in Arabia is a lot of empty spaces that do not seem to do anything. While other areas have precious few.
Synapse (814 D)

"Iran for example is stuck and with so very few neutral centers, he has to immediately go to war"

This is an insightful comment about the Middle-East rather than my variant, lol.
Ditto with "What you currently have in Arabia is a lot of empty spaces that do not seem to do anything"

Tomahaha (1170 D)

you avoided the request to make fleets playable. Too few bodies of water and no connection from side to side, no Suez canal. Bring in ALL of the Arabian Peninsula so you can work fleets around. It allows you to add Saudi Arabia as a power as well. You have too many powers up against a wall with only one direction to travel.
Synapse (814 D)
04 Aug 14 UTC
I might add canals at the side to allow for this game-play - otherwise the map shall be too large.

Synapse "I will add Saudi, but Syria is in so much turmoil it can't constitute a serious power, and is more suitable to being neutral."

You could make the start date 2010, idk. I think Syria would provide more options in the middle of the map.

Do you guys prefer with sea lanes or without sea lanes?
Decima Legio (1987 D)

There're 3 borders like venice-trieste in Classic. The problem is that 2 of them involve Basra, Iraq.
That makes the Basra opening move pretty embarassing.

Bakhtarun is bordering 3 home SCs of both Iran and Iraq.
War can barely be avoided between them.
I suggest to reshape the area: add neutrals/ change the borders/ make use of neutral SCs with neutal standing armies.

Not clear why Turkey starts with 4, considering that Turkey has not immediate threats and arguably at least 1 secure gain. Maybe it's an oversight?
I would suggest to add the powers of Kurdistan(area around Van) and Syria for a total of 8 players.

Adding SCs Aden(yemen) and Djibouti could increase interaction between Egypt and Saudi and relieve immediate pressure from Israel.
At the same time, adding a SC in Oman could divert Iran to the south instead of the anti-iraq lone option.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
More spaces are needed. And some need to be additional centers. Adding all of arabia is not getting too large either. It gives you more spaces and more need for fleets wile including ...the middle east. The name of the game.
Synapse (814 D)

Well we're already talking 1200x1200 Tomaha.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
The physical size is not important, you could easily shrink the size while still maintaining a good map and don't worry too much about exactness, if when shrunk, a territory feels too small, you can redraw an area to make it slightly larger while still be generally accurate. Most of these map spaces are huge to begin with.
