The Lost Art of Reading Orders (feature request)
Because you need to click on a link to see the orders, I feel like players on this and other sites are not paying as close attention to the orders being issued. I know they're being shown graphically, but that can be ambiguous or hard to notice; reading the orders makes you notice things you might not have, like why something is failing or what another country is trying to do, or tell you (for gunboat games).

I'd suggest placing the latest set of orders just below the map.

That's what Play Diplomacy does. I think it's a pretty good idea.
Too much info on the page would make it difficult for mobile devices. Plus, the large map shows better why orders failed if you learn to read it. I have seen numerous instances where someone insisted they supported a move from one place to another even copying and pasting the results only to be shown they had the from and two backwards.
From and to. Stupid grammar correcting phone.

Can I get a screenshot, so I can see how other sites solve this?

Here's one from PlayDiplomacy: http://i.imgur.com/TTcU5Ft.jpg

Although even there, you have to click on a link to the full set of orders to get that. Ideally it should be on the default screen. Maybe under an "expand" button if it's too many lines (like, say for the World variants).

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Oli, if they cannot take a moment to do the Orders check, then they should try the slots at the casinos and leave us do our own thing.

Ah, Zurn is right; you do have to click a link. Still. it's useful to be able to both read the orders and visually see them on your screen simultaneously.
zurn (1178 D)

Yes it is.

One important order that doesn't get displayed on the map is a cut support. That would be another feature request, to show supports that have been cut (including an indication that they have been cut, of course). I think that would be very handy.

I would also support at least just reducing the numbering of action I have to take to get to the orders. Right now it's: 1) scroll down to the orders link, 2) click the link, 3) click a second link to jump to the actual orders.

Hi Zurn,

Open the large map displays all of this information. That's the double box symbol just under the map. In addition you can also open the orders that have been made during previous turns by clicking on the order's link underneath the player list.

Yes, of course I know of the link, I'm complaining about how inconvenient it is. :) However I didn't know there was a difference in what was shown between the small and big maps.

Found a screenshot of a backstabbr.com game, shows how they do it: http://i.imgur.com/7LOAt43.png

Lol that England fail in the screenshot :DDDD

I would too like to have the cut supports visible in the smallmap (maybe as a feature you can switch off and on in your settings?), but I do not like the written list of orders.

Perhaps it would feel less cluttered on the small map if failed orders were shown in dashed lines, instead of using a big X. A few programs do this.

Although really, there will always be a little confusion, because the orders are shown on the same map as the final positions. The clearest way would be to introduce a "before" map, showing the orders before moving the units (again, something Diplomacy programs like Realpolitik do). But having an extra "in between" map is admittedly more awkward.

I have to agree with Zur on this. While the information may be available the ability to read orders while analyzing the map is an extremely usefool tool in mastering he game. Comments to the extent of this being difficult to utilize on a mobile phone are beyond annoying. I get it, playing Dip on you mobile phone is a pain. So use them sparingly. Why should the available product suffer because we need it all to fit on a phone?

It is handy that the orders are available, even if the syntax is confusing and displayed in a less than ideal format. The bottom line is that the overall quality of play in the VDip comminuty would improve if players could view orders and map in the same place without having to toggle windows or remember to make multiple clicks to do so.

Maybe that's all too much to as for, and an extensive programming solution, and I understand that too. But as requests for features go this certainly trumps most of those coming in, and more than a few of those that exist.

Also, an offer to try any of them so long as they are unrated. I don't mind a loss and consider it a challenge to hang in as long as possible in the somewhat unbalanced. Although never again will I play Russia v Germany.

I came up with this idea to help Oli with the webdip exodus as well as just in general. How would you all feel about a independant forum (like a proboards style) for online diplomacy players?

Possible to implement this rule variant?
I was wondering, is it feasible for a variant like Ambition and Empire (http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Ambition_and_Empire) to be implemented on vDiplomacy? It's not just a map variant, it also has a few additional rules. The biggest one is the Diplomacy Points: you get one per supply centre you own, and can issue one order to a neutral unit per point. Others can do so as well, and the order most commonly given to the unit is the one that gets used.
