I played a 1v1 game yesterday but the other player had to leave before the game was over. I would appreciate it if someone could explain how they thought the game would go and what good moves/mistakes each player made. I'm new to 1v1 and am trying to get better
Thanks

Thoughts on improving Rinascimento
Rinascimento is a horribly unbalanced variant. While I realise it is set in a historical setting and the powers at the time were not of the same strength, it is virtually unplayable for several of the smaller factions.
TheatreVarus (874 D)
24 Aug 16 UTC
In order to fix the problems I see with this variant (the overpowered faction Venezia and the nigh-impossible survival conditions for Pisa, French, Siena, and Ferrara, I suggest the following changes.
TheatreVarus (874 D)
24 Aug 16 UTC
Venezia should remain with four starting centers, but the HRE should be added as a faction in control of Trieste and Trento. This will give Venezia an active opponent in the northern Adriatic and check their power to control the entire northern border of the map.
TheatreVarus (874 D)
24 Aug 16 UTC
To ensure the survivability of French, Siena, Pisa, and Ferrara, they need more power at the start of the game.
French should own Geneve, as well as starting with armies in Domodossola and Annecy.
Siena should own Grossetto as well as Siena.
Pisa should have control of Pisa and Elba, and start with an army in Pisa instead of a fleet.
Ferrara should own both Ferrrara and Commachio.
With these changes, the survivability of all these factions increases, but they are still weaker than their neighbors, preserving the historical imbalance of the game.
Tell me your thoughts, and please suggest other improvements or adjustments to mine.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

The game is called Diplomacy, not Tactics. Critiques of France's starting position is valid. However, single center minors have to trade on their weakness and the mistrust between their larger neighbors to survive long enough to get into a stabbing position. That is the nature of the game. I don't know whether it was ever implemented, but when the map debuted there was talk of altering the post-game pay outs so that surviving minors were massively rewarded for the greater accomplishment.
I remember talking to Tadar es Darden when he created this variant and he basically only threw France into the game because he was living around there at the time. Once we can get a development area happening around here again it wouldn't be hard to make a variant on a variant for people who want greater balance rather than historical accuracy.
Enriador (1507 D)
24 Aug 16 UTC
I would:

1) Remove Siena, Pisa and Ferrara altogether (Pisa didn't even existed anymore by the timeframe),

2) Make Domodossola, Annecy and Briançon French supply centers (France was the premier great power during the Italian Wars, so it's more than fair),

3) Create a new faction, Austria (or Habsburgs), on Trento and Trieste, for the reasons given by the OP.

Why not save the maps and fiddle around with adding/removing areas, and make a variant based off this map?

Some time ago I remember that I made two drafts of Rinascimento, with many more powers/city states involved. Based on the current map obviously.
The german Landsknecht, the Berber pirates, a rising house of Habsburg, the crown of Aragon and others...
Basically a crowded variant of Rinascimento.
If I do find them I'll take care to share them.
ScubaSteve (1234 D)

I like the idea of making a crowded variant. I kinda enjoy the crazy and unbalanced nature of the map. Maybe leave it like it is and make additional maps? I do appreciate that it is not remotely balanced but I think that makes it interesting. I'd hate to lose it. Then again, I like the special rule games so maybe I'm just kinda a weirdo. I'd love the maps with huge amounts of countries because I feel like it makes the gameplay much deeper.

i'd actually only change france's chances to even survive the first turns ...

besides that, what i really like about this variant is that the small ones have to cooperate closely with each other, or offer a beneficial support to a larger power in return for protection and own growth – due to positions of the small powers, Venice is profitting less from this than Milan or the Pope can(!).
In a "perfect" game with committed players, it is very possible to keep Venice in check. The actual problem is that we are rather often often lacking players who see the potential in a "hopeless" position, are frustated to have "Pisa again ...", get impatient and don't play their role then. In such situations, the large ones dominate fast, the small ones get impatient, they stab Milan or the Pope, and Venice wins.

As someone said above: this is Diplomacy, not Tactics, and this variant may be an extreme form of this concept, but having such a variant with a worthy addition.

Well said Hirnsaege.
On my part I have managed to draw twice as Siena, once as Turkish, once as Ferrara.
I have been defeated as the Papal States.
This variant is all about playing the role that you have been given.
It is unfortunate that many players get impatient with a "minor" power and go dot grabbing without thinking to the greater picture.

Congrats Ambassador, nice win as Turkish!
And Kaner... Nice Harlequinade, eh eh eh!

I have edited a draft map from the original Rinascimento.
It is truly a "low cost" variant. No geographical changes, only SCs and units initial ownership.
In an initial revision I included 4 more 1 SCs powers: County of Provence (Nizza), Duchies of Modena and Mantova, Republic of Lucca. However, those 4 position were not adding that much appeal on the variant itself, so I decided to go for the former 12 powers + 8 new powers

***Former factions***
Republic of Venezia
Spalato no longer a Venetian SC

Duchy of Milano
same as before

Duchy of Ferrara
same as before

Republic of Firenze
same as before

Duchy of Burgundy (or simply the French)
Armies in Annecy and Domodossola
Added SC ownership of Nizza (fleet)

Republic of Genova
same as before

Kingdom of Napoli
Palermo no longer a Napolitan SC

Republic of Pisa
same as before

Duchy of Savoia
same as before

Republic of Siena
same as beforea

Stato della Chiesa
same as before

Turkish
same as before

***New factions***

Crown of Aragon
Areas of influence: Sicily + Sardinia
Starting SCs: Palermo + Cagliari (fleets)

House of Habsburgs
Starting SC: Trieste (army)

Bishopric of Trent
Starting SC: Trento

Saracens
Same concept of Turkish: they start with 3 fleets and zero SCs, ravaging Tyrrenian coasts.
Initial position: Western Ligurian Sea, Africa, Terrazzo delle Lipari

Republic of Ragusa
Starting SC: Spalato (it should be actually Ragusa, not Spalato, but I don't want to change the territories nature). (Fleet)

Duchy of Urbino
Starting SC: Urbino

Republic of Ancona
Starting SC: Ancona (fleet)

Imperial Landsknechts
Same concept of Turkish: they start with 4 armies and zero SCs, ravaging northern Italy.
Initial position: Bergamo, Bobbio, Castel del Rio (simulating the siege of Firenze of 1530) and Spoleto (simulating the sack of Rome of 1527).

Geneve remains the sole guarded neutral SC.

Well, it's a draft.
The period is something between XV century and mid XVI century.
I tried not to put History upside down still respecting the constraints of the previous map geography.
I think that there're not anymore "barely hopeless" positions; nor there're "superpowers" like Venice in the current variant.
However, many things may change depending on your thoughts/doubts, especially about starting SCs and starting units position.
Hirnsaege (1903 D)
26 Aug 16 UTC
@Decima Legio:
i know the colouring of the neutral centers to some faction is due to "historical accuracy", but for judging balance the map while drafting, it would be easier to read if a neutral supply center would really be coloured neutral. Like Aragon or Naples look huge on this map now (and historically this is true), but in fact they just own two or three centers in the beginning.

Perhaps the position of the German Imperial Landsknechts was leaning too much agaist Milano in the north.
Maybe this way (Sondrio + Mantova as a starting SC) would look better in terms of gaming and in terms of history of the XVI century:

sorry for asking for things, then not responding anymore ...

thanks for the updated map, i think it's much clearer now to judge balances, and that second version posted looks interesting to me to try and test and improve in details after testing.

but it's more like some other (welcome) variant set on the italy map, not a "rebalancing" of original Rinascimento (which by concept has to be in disbalance, but currently has some obvious glitches like France having no chance to survive at all, which may not have been the intention when designing the variant).

My first encounter with this map was as PISA in a Gunboat..I am having fun playing pirate trying to keep my one or 2 fleets up..am currently heading to Sicily having lost anything I gain the turn after I get it lol.

I'm against adding too many more powers, it just makes the map more cluttered, confusing, and more difficult to find enough players to start.

My suggestions are:
Expand Ferrera to include Man and maybe Mod.
Transfer Papal home SC of Bologna to Rav.
Have Pisa start with Pisa, Gro, and Elba.
Remove Siena.
Add Austria with Trento, Trieste and Udine.
Have Savoia start with Aosta and Cha instead.
Make Briancon and Nizza French starting SCs (this makes it possible at least for a while for the French and Savoia to co-exist).

I personally think that the argument that the smaller powers can simply counter their seeming disadvantage by banding together or with active diplomacy as a flawed one, since the larger powers are faced with less need to conduct active diplomacy, so the playing field is still uneven due to the differing priorities of the powers. And sometimes even the best diplomats, so long as their nearest neighbor is not too compromising can't do anything. For example Siena or France. Siena will have to play a guessing game with Firenze to survive the first year, and no amount of diplomacy can change this if Firenze is determined to quickly wipe off Siena and dominate its area (there is the possibility a determined Papal state intervention might force Firenze to return to protect his home SCs, but then again this will amount to a guessing game on the part of Firenze on whether to turn back or double down, with nothing to do with diplomacy). Meaning, France in most cases will end up with just one SC after the first year and will basically be walled in by a larger Savoia. Short of a determined Milanese intervention, France is dead.
Here I tried to create a scenario as balanced as possible while having some semblance to history (Pisa owning Gro is simply for balancing Firenze). It still requires polishing, and Naples and Turkey might become a bit stronger, but overall everyone has a realistic opportunity for a solo.

I've played several Rinascrimentos: once as Venice, drawn (given these changed conditions, since I assume the "own Rome" requirement has to do with Venice's inherent advantage, which no longer exists, I suggest we remove it, else it gives an advantage to duchies in the South-West), once as Savoia, where I made a genuine effort to try something new with France, allow him to move past me, but just a year into it I learned through a long a hard battle that there is no possibility for Savoia and France to ever get along with the current map (somehow I managed to be part of the draw, although my size throughout the entire game barely changed as a result of France and later Venice), and once as Ferrera, with predictable results. I was doing fine between Milan, Papal States and Venice, but when the Venice juggernaut got going I (along with everyone else around me at the same time) was squashed like an ant.
ingebot (2014 D)
14 Sep 16 UTC
I also think there should be a build phase here, and Vic/Treviso/Aqu/Fiume be made a neutral SC.
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)

I'd like to play the game several times, and suggest trying it unrated so that we can explore the various merits of the large and small powers. I have a tendency to reject out of hand the complaints that this variant is imbalanced simply because far too many players come at it from a strictly gunboat and grab dots perspective. If you look at the game that way, and imbalanced variant won't play well. Playing it as PPSC or modified buy-in doesn't address the problem of the game being stacked to the so called advantaged positions. The game is called Diplomacy for a reason. Use it.

What do you do in any other game when one player starts getting far ahead of the pack? You gang up on the bastard and take him out or put him in line while looking for your own opportunities to break loose. Unfortunately the PPSC model actually discourages challenging the large starting powers because you can still score points whoring to them from the beginning. This defeats the purpose of playing Diplomacy. Every should play the game to win, and when they do the games are great, win or lose. Winning's not always possible, but when it becomes so there is still fun to be had in playing spoiler, crash and burn, or slowing down the steamroller, and just making chaotic unpredictable moves to keep players on their toes.

I maintain that this variant can be played and won by the smaller powers if you remove the PPSC barrier and get communicative scheming players engaged. It's not a variant for the smash and grab style, and that's why it's not popular.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this variant was created as a special rules game and later modified to fit into the WebDip format. Several of the special rules simply don't translate well, and that detracts from it's greatness. Yet it's still a very enjoyable map, and I argue further evidence the perceived imbalanced starting positions (likewise in Pirates and Imperial) are in fact very playable.

Is anyone interested in some unrated games of Rinascimento to explore this? I'll play any of the small nations. Maybe if we look at this in another light, we can truly see if it requires all the change that people are calling for.

When do you think we'll be able to test things again? Next month? For Christmas? Next Summer?

PSA: Do not create Pick Your Country games with the Choose Your Country option enabled.
There's a bug in the PYC variant that causes it to crash when the game starts if the Choose Your Country option is enabled. Getting the games to cancel after everyone has joined requires banning/unbanning one player in the game, which can cause a lot of issues if that player is in other games, and is a fair amount of work even if they're not.

Until Oli is able to fix the bug (which may be a while), please only use the Random Country Assignment option for PYC.
