Question Regarding CDs
I've noticed that when I click the profiles of people who CD in games, it sometimes still shows 0 CDs on their record. Any reason for it not showing up? Seems to semi-absolve people of CDs?

This Thread is a response to YouCan’tHandleTheTruth, The Ambassador, and anyone else who thinks the Forum needs to be devoid of anyone related to HQD.

First off, we aren’t bots. Just wanna throw that out there. The mods already investigated this and we cleared it up months ago. Yes we have similar names as a bit of an inside joke and we make the same general jokes, but we aren’t bots, just good friends.

Secondly, if you don’t like spam, sure we’ll stop. Not even joking. I don’t think we’ve really spammed that much since the first couple threads made by us other than making a few joke threads these past couple weeks, but if that really grinds your gears we can stop. I’m speaking for most of us here, obviously I can’t tell people what to do, but I know most people I speak for will have the common courtesy to not spam anymore.

Third, understand that this is a website for a game. Yes, it is a board game. Yes, you are very serious about the game, we can all see how serious you are about this game, good job you. However, this does not change what it is. I know a lot of people can get extremely attached to a game, like all of those pro chess players and so forth, but not everybody is as serious about this game as you are and you need to learn how to deal with that.

If you expect every new player to take this game as seriously as you then you end up pushing new players away from the game. If that’s what you’d like to do, go for it, but it’ll end up being the same people playing over and over again until they all stop, in which scenario nobody will play it anymore, which I think would be extremely sad to happen to (almost) any game out there.

Fourth, I want to point out that the “HQD bots” are not the only people that have left joke comments. I’m not going to act like we aren’t the most frequent offenders or inciters, but we aren’t the only ones. And no, I’m not just referring to those people that also know us but chose not to put HQD in their names, I mean that there are other people who have done it that we know not at all, so I know there are some people on the website who can distinguish between malicious chaos and a joke. I’m not saying this to say that you are unjust in calling us out, nor am I trying to use it as a way to excuse our actions, all I am trying to say is this:

For nearly everyone who has asked us to stop I have seen someone joining in, so that’s a little conflicting obviously. However, recently, I have seen a lot more people asking us to stop, so therefore I will.

Finally, you can ignore these threads just as much as we ignore the vast majority of you guys’ threads. There have been more threads as of recent that we have commented on since it is the end of school and we have much more freetime, but we have mostly ignored the walls of text from large, serious threads like Variant Tournaments, 1v1 Tournament Rules, and I’ve Been Boursed!!! I don’t feel the need to commend “Muted” or anything like that on them, so I don’t see why you do.

TL:DR: We won’t spam anymore and if you don’t like our jokes, that’s fine with me we’ll take them to a different game and “POOF” you now have less players. Congratulations :D

PS: Most of us basically won’t be using this website by the end of the month since Summer Vacation is starting up and we have better things to be doing than playing an electronic board game, so you won’t even have to see us after that. (Mods, don’t think this will affect us quitting games or whatever, most of us are dead or dying already)

I think, in order to actually appreciate why people are unhappy here, you have to understand a bit about this site and its sister site, webDiplomacy.

Both are based on the same code and as a result have the same forum layout, with no post categories and so no real way to filter. It's decent on a small site since there is not much being posted and everyone gets to see everything that everyone is saying pretty easily, but once a site starts to grow it can get really problematic as off-topic threads mix in with important ones and it becomes harder to find anything.

WebDiplomacy grew fairly quickly, and the mod team decided to leave the forum to its own devices, which led to it becoming a 4chan-esque hellhole. Many of vDip's earlier users came here because they really hated the forum on webDiplomacy, and the smaller userbase and less troll-y forum over here was a welcome relief.

The mods over on webDip started cleaning up the forum and starting enforcing rules a while ago, but they still don't really regulate spam, and as a result their forum is still a mess, albeit a less hateful one. Certain users there (one specifically over the past year or so) have a habit of posting large numbers of meaningless joke threads much like the ones you guys have been posting here, and it leads to the forum being unreadable and just awful to try to find anything in. Most of our userbase has played on or is playing on WebDiplomacy too, and so everyone's acutely aware of what an unregulated forum can turn into.

We've always had stricter policies over here to stop all that happening. They don't usually need to be enforced, because our community is pretty good at following them by themselves.

I'm not anti-fun and I understand you guys are just joking around, but we want to keep our forum away from what webDiplomacy became. Off-topic threads are fine provided they serve some purpose, but spam is not, and spam is what you were making. I'm not sure what you find so fun about it, but surely there's somewhere else you can do this?
Thank you for your response, As HQDominator said, most of us will probably be leaving this site in the next couple weeks due to summer vacation coming up. I also agree that there should be some limit on spam although we could have a different opinion of what spam is: I think that people should not be allowed to fill a page with a repeating word, gibberish, or garbage of other sorts (which I have seen some of my friends doing) but I do think it is acceptable to create fun little threads that are off topic such as the threads that we created. This is not my site so if the mods disagree they can block those threads. Completely fine.

Well, I understand why you wouldn't like spam, which is why I've promised to stop that altogether. That's basically what the premise of this response was. I understand that you guys like to keep it a bit more serious here on this site, which is totally fine by me, but there needs to be a happy medium of some point. What that is, I don't know, but I was just trying to state our point of view.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)

With all due respect HQD, there *is* a happy medium. It's what the site was before all this started. We, as a community, decided through our posts how we wanted it to be. We reached our equilibrium, our "happy medium" if you will. The fact that there's so much backlash to the threads you and your friends have posted show that they do not gel with our happy medium.

Now, there's nothing wrong with your style per see, it's just that, as a community, we've already decided we don't want that style of posting here. If you guys want more of that in your Diplomacy experience than we want here, I wish you the best in your effort to find a place that it's welcome. That place isn't here though.

As for the whole summer break thing: Honestly, that kinda makes it worse. You guys all joined up, made a ruckus here, and then were going to ditch out soon anyways. Can you see how that might be seen as disrespectful by those of us who aren't here for only a couple months?
We have been here for several months before we started making the "joke" forums but I can imagine many of us returning after summer. it's just a lot of trouble to keep up with a diplomacy game while going on a bunch of trips where we could be away from internet or electronics.

I also should have phrased my previous response differently: Because of the backlash to the threads we have made, I will not be creating any more "joke" threads. Even though I think the "happy medium" should be different, it is what it is. I do not want people to be getting offended or annoyed by the threads. (After all, this is just a game site that most of us are on for fun)

Also could you tell YouCan'tHandletheTruth to un-mute us because he probably was the most offended/annoyed by our threads, and I want him to see this response.

I'm not active on the forums here all that much, so my greatest concern is what you'll do about the games you are in. I'm in the Et Tu, Brute? game along with some of you, and if you're going to drop off the site when summer rolls around, just make sure to get a replacement. That is, if you're still alive by then. Those southerners really are gobbling up so many players. We lost 4 this year alone.

Not to be a Grinch or anything, but we ask that you not post anything related to active games.. especially anonymous games. That kinda proves the problem we are having with a group that joins, knows they are in an anonymous game together, and has the opportunity to discuss things outside the moderated chats. We ask you make games you intend to play together private and invite each other with passwords. Otherwise, those outside your group are at a tremendous disadvantage.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)

+1 to Samj. Even if you somehow avoid the pitfall of allying/attacking your friends over things from outside the game, there's still the problem of the fact that you can collude/chat in person, while everyone else has to wait for internet responses. The advantages of this cannot be overstated. Especially on vdip where standard turns are 24 or 36 hours, the ability to hash things out in person in 10 minutes, as opposed to hoping the other person sees your message, responds, and then is back online to see *your* response, and then respond to yours, and on and on, is extremely valuable. Add in the fact that everyone else does not get to know that certain powers have this advantage, and one can see the problem with it.

Tech and Sam, without posting too much about active games (specifically Et Tu, Brute?) we have not communicated outside of the website since we learned that it was against the rules to do so, and if we have we then did it through the website simultaneously. Us knowing each other has not given us any unfair advantage from what I've seen, nor has it made us unfairly disadvantage any other players as evidenced by our poor win/losses.....

There was only one game that we tried to metagame on, and that was against someone from our group as a joke. It fell apart because we got bored/couldn't log on (I can't actually remember why it stopped working) and we made it clear it was a joke afterwards. I would feel horrible if we gave ourselves an advantage like that and sincerely hope nobody thought that we did
Technostar (1302 D)

I only use in-game communication, even though a few of my IRL friends are in the game. I don't trust people enough to reveal my country even if it was not against the rules, so I only say things about the game any spectator could clearly see. Metagaming is a huge concern for me, so like the HQs, I have taken steps to ensure there is no risk. When my friends and I do private games, my reputation is so bad that I always get coalitioned against, so I know firsthand why anonymity is valuable.

It wasn't an accusation, I simply wanted to expound on why the rules are what they are. And why we frown on any references to a live game.No harm done. And vets have to be reminded from time to time when they get REALLY burned about something.

New Thread Idea
Does anyone know Polish History? Did The Deluge cause such material damage that it doomed Poland to economic and political death spiral, did it devastate the proto-bourgeois, densely populated Northwest at a key moment within a republic when it was fighting with the rural, agrarian South and East thus stunting an incipient movement towards urbanization and development or did it not really have any long term effect?

Diplomacy: Is Germany Too Weak?
I noticed that Germany is considerably weaker in Diplomacy than it's historical counterpart. In game, Germany can very easily be knocked out by England and France. However, historically Germany was able to fight competently on three separate fronts. Does anybody feel that Germany is a little misrepresented in game?
More importantly, are there any variants that address this?
