Extending the pre game time
Is it possible to extend the time while waiting for players in a game I created? If so how? Thanks

It's time to talk about Scoring
Hello all!

Let's talk about scoring? More specifically, about whether the dreaded Points Per Supply Center (PPSC) scoring should remain an option?

1 v 1 games on variant maps
I am not a coder (sic) so I was wondering how hard is/was it to code 1 v 1 games? Is it reasonable to think that variant maps (Modern, Ancient Med, etc) could be set up to create 1 v 1 games? The idea of having a larger group of countries to play against each other is intriguing. I just don't know if it possible, or doable.

How old school are you?
I am not very tech savvy so forgive me. I think I started dip on some RSS pages using Netscape at work in maybe 1996(?) does that make sense? All email based through Judges. What were they called? USDJ or something. I remember FROG but they all spoke French. Haha. I used to stand outside my office in the snow smoking a cig with a hand drawn map with about 100 crossing out for each phase using coloured pens. Ah web based interactive maps?!?! Luxury!!!

Notices
The notices on my front page are all jumbled up in a random order. PMs from weeks ago are at the top, and some of my game messages from the past day or two are lower down. Is anyone else noticing this?

Napoleonic Variant, and the lack of neutral centers
I had the honor to play 'Napoleonic' back in the lab (an awful game as Spain by the way). I had a question back then which I ask here and now:

Why there are no neutral supply centers?

"Biggest Game of All Time Completed"- worth a look

By the nice people at WebDip.

End of Games coming, including a spectacular 80,000 word masterpiece by the leader.  Can't wait to read it.    See their forum for EoGs.

Hopefully the nice chaps at my favorite podcast, Diplomacy Games, will get to interview the players too.  4,500 points per player is impressive.

A shame it was gunboat. I wonder how things would have played out in a proper Diplomacy match. Epic nonetheless!

The ridiculously high-pot games are always gunboats, because gunboaters can play more games and thus good gunboaters gain many more D-Points than good full press players.

Most of the top level full press games have bets of 5 points, because those players are only interested in Ghost-Rating.
jason4747 (1633 D)

Captainmeme, there is a "top 100 GR" game going too, it is press. Is that more what you are taking about?

And by the way, just for us uninformed guys, what is a simple explanation of "ghost rating?"

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=206204#gamePanel

Ghost rating was created by The ghostmasker on webDip and is similar to our vRating (calculated a bit different but the idea is the same). It's a better measure of skill over webDip points for just the reason Cap points out.

Thanks! And I do understand the logic, one can have a misaligned rating based on the type of Games played.

I always considered GR to be better tool to show player skill than points. I still think GR is great tool but it had also some negative effects on the game itself. Players started to calculate with whom they would play and who would be prefered target in order to increase the chance of increasing their GR. In a way, GR from useful tool became a purpose to some players.
Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))

I think a lot of those negative side effects of GR were due to people misunderstanding how GR works. Your GR score is based purely on who you were playing against and how well you did according to the game's scoring system (PPSC/WTA at the start, then SoS/DSS) - it didn't matter which players had been eliminated, only which ones were in the game.

The easiest way to think about it (although not entirely correct) is that everyone puts a percentage of their GR as the game's 'pot', and then that pot is distributed just like D-points at the end of the game. So, say that percentage was 10%, and you had one player with 900 GR and six players with 100, the pot would be made up of 90 points from the 900 GR player and 10 points each from the 100 GR players (total of 150 points). If that game finished in a 5-way draw and it was WTA/DSS, everyone in the draw would get 30 points, 1/5 of the pot. It doesn't matter whether the 900 GR player was eliminated or not, everyone in the draw would still earn the same number of points.

It is true that it made very good players stop joining games with complete noobs, but I think that's not necessarily a bad thing. Also, the introduction of Unrated games fixed that problem.

I hadn't been aware of that game. Though I have almost no interest in gunboat, it was interesting to look at.

I wouldn't have commented just to "me too" or even to say thanks except that the GR-100 game came up and I happen to be in it. If anyone wants to discuss dynamics in that game, I'm happy to do so where such discussion wouldn't interfere with the game.

Also, I'll raise the most interesting game(s) going on over there as they would have been very easy to miss. slypups put together, so far two, "Pairs" games. It plays on Modern. There is a GM and the 10 players are divided into 5 two-player teams. You stand or fall as a team in terms of winning. There is a mildly complicated, and in my opinion useless, flourish of "bounties" which are individual and give you a target that, if defeated, and additionally if occupied, gives you more weight in a draw. The complexity is such that I don't believe it can rationally modify your game play non-trivially. So just focus on the main different quality - you have an unshakeable alliance from the start. (I made a small contribution pre-first-game in adding that the pairing is secret information, which I modestly believe is part of what makes it so good.)

The first of those games (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=200950 - don't forget to copy and paste or it is interpreted as a local link because of forum code) is probably the most fun game of Diplomacy that I've played in my 30 years in the game. Or perhaps second place. We're frequently counseled that the behavior of all powers always matters to everyone, and this is true to an extent, but in Pairs, pretty much everyone is either in your orbit or your pair's orbit. Early on, you're trying to figure out the alliances. People keep planting false flags. I grant that, being experimental and arranged in forums, the game attracted unusually strong players. But still, I've never seen such intricate play and diplomacy.

Sadly, that first game ended early when one player had to leave and there was acrimony over how to proceed. (There had been an NMR, what to do, etc.) Another player insisted that if that player were replaced that we had to replace him too, and rather than bruise feelings we just tied it out and started over with 8 or 9 of the originals. I invited in the player I most admire and hoped for same-to-better.

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=205748 is part 2.

This was a frustrating game for me because I saw the potential in the first game, and in the second game drew a player who just doesn't talk. Like, hardly ever in regular (FP) games. And in this game, he had no interest in discussing the state of the world or in working on things diplomatically in a joint game. At most, he'd send me a note with his planned moves. So I lost the special aspect of the game that made it interesting and was at such an enormous disadvantage as I'm sure the other 8 players were experiencing what I did the first time. As you can see, I'm soon to be eliminated. (To be clear, lest I'm misunderstood, I both like and admire this player. I just don't think his play style is conducive to this experiment.)

We're already in discussion about a third go. Hopefully we can fill it with big talkers. My pair from the first game (ND) and I have asked slypups about allowing signups as pairs, rather than assignment from individual signups. This is less good in a sense, as it clumps players of high talent together, and on top of that, it provides a disincentive to even join for players who, with the pairs that they can find, will be a bit dominated. All it does is prevent my particular fate - it makes it far less likely that you end up with a non-talker or someone with whom you have a language barrier. But the medicine may be worse than the disease. Presumably the non-talkers will eventually weed themselves out if these games become popular because they're at a far larger disadvantage than they would be even in regular full press games.

I don't know if GMs have special ability to control games, as seems to have been implied here and there. At least, it seems GMs can pause games. I'm not sure how they are designated or how such controls are accessed. But if there is interest here in such a thing and someone explains to me how to manage the technology to be a GM, I'd be happy to be the organizer and oversee things in terms of setting up pairs and tending to game play aspects, which I think I do understand well.

The only asterisk that I include here is that if slypups is on this site and if he wants to direct it, I'll cede the honor to him (and probably play!) as it is his invention. Variants are slow-coming on webdip and fall from heaven here. (It was the main reason I came over here, and I've played some wild games!) It seems more likely that, if this idea gets further fleshed out and is popular, it gets implemented as a game mechanism here, not requiring specific oversight by a GM. I'll be happy if I can help to build some interest over here.

New Maps
I'm super new to the site and I was curious how new maps were made and/or submitted. I noticed a lot of the maps look a bit old and it got me thinking about what it would take to create a higher resolution version of a game map. Are there certain file formats a map must be in or is this all a responsibility for site admins only? Thanks!

Custom phase bug
This might be better in the Mods section, but I thouht I'd post here first to see if other users have any input.

I'm trying to create a new game with a custom phase length. When I select "Custom" from the drop-down menu, nothing happens. However, when I select "2 days, 2 hours", I've given the option to input a phase length. Hopefully this is an easy fix.

Tactics
In year one when you just meeting everyone, maybe there anonymous but for sure you don't know any of them. How do you know who to trust?
They can be lying through their teeth and text doesn't show tone of voice or eye contact so you have no idea. If you believe them they may stab you. If you don't you venture into a DMZ and piss them off. Ask around to others and you get rumors or nothing. This game seems so much better suited to face to face.

Classic Mini-Tourney - Is there interest?
I thought about making a mini-tourney - comprising a single game - using a similar scheme to most Face-to-Face scoring systems.

Basically it'll be a Classic game, running until Fall 1907 and a PPSC structure. The bet would be 100 points - for a ultimate pot worth 700 points.

Unable to enter certain orders. How to contact GM
Can someone help. I am playing one of the odder variants. New for me. I’ve read the variant page repeatedly and seems I ought to be able to enter a certain order. But it’s not available as an option. (Maybe I’m missing something. Or maybe a bug). Emailed the mods. But how do I contact GameMaster min a gunboat game?
Thanks
