Variant development questions (Pits of Horror)
Hello! I'm trying to develop a new variant and would like some help debugging some things. If anyone wants to help I would be very happy!!

I have uploaded a map.png, and a mapNames.png but I still can't see anything in the "Map" interface (some error gets thrown)?

Done.
You should be able to edit your variant again.
Remember to switch to the largemap-view to set the unit-placement. In smallmap-view it shows now your map too (but without units). Bevore it did show an error instead of the smallmap.

Really looking forward to this! Player5, is there a story behind how you came up with the concept for this? It's really unique!
I agree, this looks amazing!
What are the units going to look like

I didn't see a link to the map. Is it only available through the dev tools?

Thanks! Just was thinking about what would be fun, and ended up with a map that was a bit bigger than I anticipated! I was going to draw little unique lovecraftian monsters for each country, but it might be hard to distinguish between fleets and armies so might just draw two and then recolor them

So the map and most of the region names you came up with yourself? That's really impressive!

Thanks!! I've been having a blast with it!

Alright I'm getting closer to finishing this variant. For the code changes, would @Oli rather I try to implement (more like copy paste from what someone else has written) and have Oli look over it, or would they rather just do it themselves?

The two code changes I want are:
1) Custom units (I should've already added them all)
2) Build anywhere centers (I think its the same as Haven's Eternal Build centers). I want countries to be able to build in their home centers and any off the following (assuming they own the territory)
> Aarack's Point (id: 293)
> City of Lux (id:114)
> Demonslayer's Keep (id: 212)
> Durath, City of Unspeakable Horrors (ids: 126, 367, 368)
> Dureen (id: 336)
> Duskfall (id: 132)
> Kargraack, the Village on top of the World (id: 320)
> Lugaarth Port (id: 275)
> Moonloft City (id: 260)
> Numar, the Trader's City (id: 173)
> Southern Remains of the Split City of Kaarlock (id: 156)
> The City of Ashes (id: 223)
> Tomb of the Demon Prince (id: 136)
> Twisted Hand (id: 153)
> Verleff, City of the Witches (id: 252)

After that and after I upload the interactive map, then do I need to do the resizing to create the smallmap, or is the smallmap completely unnecessary?
the smallmap is completely unnecessary

I will add the code for your rule-changes.
Every code you upload needs to be manually-checked by me to avoid security-problems. That's why I always recommend a local install for everybody that needs to do some code-development.
And your variant is really large, you don't need a smallmap. I will add the neccessary code too.

Makes sense!

Awesome! Then I think after changing the starting year to 666, everything should be ready to go?
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

Do you want a more "horror"-like turn-naming?
At the moment most variants use:
$turn % 2 ? "Autumn, " : "Spring, " ).(floor($turn/2) + starting_year.

But internally it's just a turn-number, that's converted to a string. So everything is possible. You don't even need the Spring<->Autumn distinction.
Maybe leave the year always at 666, and add some other turn indicator behind this...? Or some other interesting ideas?
How about "Harrowing of Shadows" for Spring, and "Harvest of Souls" for Autumn? The H-S alliteration is a bonus.

Hi Player5 all changes are implemented on my dev-server. But there are a few things left to do:

Recheck the initial territory-occupation.
For example:

Ithaqua has the following starting units:
'Deathkeep' => 'Fleet'
'Land of the Twisted Mystics' => 'Fleet'

But in the editor it has the following initial territories:
Deathkeep,
Durath, City of Unspeakable Horrors.

this results in an error, as it can't place a unit on a territory that's neutral.

If you want to use your icons for the interactive-map we need some "smaller" versions for the build-icon (look at the Haven-variant in the interactive-map directory to get a clue what I mean).

The countries have no color set for the text. All is black, so nobody knows who is typing what. Set the text-color, or I need to add the countrynames in front of the text.

All your unit icons have a white border. This is no problem for the map as the white is set to transparent, but it looks a bit ugly on the orderinterface, as there it's still white. If you set the background to "transparent" on all icons it looks much better.

Also the icons have exactly the same color as the territories, so they are a bit hard to see on the map. Maybe a darker tone would help.

PS: Now that your unique unit-icons are on the map you might consider the placemant of your units to enhance the readability of your map.
I always try to avoid overlapping order-arrows and place the units/SCs so all territory-names are easy to read.

Looks like I have some work to do!!

Re Ithaqua builds / init territories: Nice catch! Thanks for fixing that for me!

Re country color in chat: The standard colors didn't look nice on a light background in chat so I was thinking going with the divided states approach of having them be all black with country names in front.

I'll fix the country Icons with the transparency and a small version of them. You are right, they are a bit hard to see. Its not bad when you look up close, but it is quite hard to see the units when you are looking at the whole map. I'll come up with something (a darker-toned outline on the inside could look nice?)

Oooh!! Horror like term naming would be cool!! @Lukas Podolski, love the idea of harvest for fall! Maybe something like "Year 666, Advent of the ??? Moon" and "Year 666, Harvest of the ??? Moon", with the year updating every 12 'diplomacy years'... hmm... something to think about. I'll send you a function once I settle on something!
Advent/Harvest of the Blood Moon? Filling in your "???". But yea feel free to bounce me ideas here/PM if you want to brainstorm together.

If you’re going for extra satanicness (definitely a real word) you could mak the year update every 6, 7 or 13 normal years
Player5 (2203 D)
02 Jun 20 UTC
13 actually works out, because there are 12 normal moons in the year, and then we can add a special moon like "Blood Moon" (which actually fits the theme quite well!). Now that I think about it, harvest doesn't quite work, because October's moon is the "Harvest moon" so year 10 fall would be "Harvest of the Harvest Moon" which doesn't quite roll off the tongue...

Let's go with:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
$turnLabels = array("Wolf", "Snow", "Worm", "Pink", "Flower", "Strawberry", "Buck", "Sturgeon", "Corn", "Harvest", "Frost", "Cold", "Blood");

return ("Year ").(floor($turn / 26) + 666).(", ").($turn % 2 ? "Ruin" : "Advent").(" of the ").($turnLabels[($turn / 2) % 13] ).(" Moon");
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Not sure how this is going on but if there is any test game running later on please count me in :)

About the names, I think having more than two phases per year is fine as long as you have a way to let players conveniently identify which phase is build/autumn-equivalent and which is not.
Is this still going on?

I do plan on finishing it! At some point... I'll probably open it up again in December?
No worries, take your time! I just want to see if this is still alive =D

idea
i suppose i could ask this here. im thinking of creating a diplomacy discord server. one of the games on it will be vDIp along with conspiracy, web dip, and diplicity. would you guys be interested in joining for the vdip section? it certainly would not be anything like a full fledged Vdip server. just something to help set up fun games and fill games like these. i just want to gauge the interest of the community first.

Big Hitters vDip game
I'm interested in creating a new game for players with 2000+ vDip points. Password protected.

If you meet this criteria let me know here that you're interested. Once we know how many players, we can decide which variant etc.

An issue with the interactive map
I note that in the interactive map it's not uncommon for the icon that cancels the order to hide the territory I'd like to select. I think this reduces interactive map usability especially in maps with smaller territories (Imperial Dip is a clear example). A simple solution would be to move the icon further away from the selected unit. I don't know how complicated it would be to implement this change tho.

Is this metagaming?
Let's say that through experience of playing in the same game as someone, I have noticed that a player has been very untrustworthy and deceiving. Am I allowed to use that knowledge in another game, and remember to be cautious around that player? Or is it metagaming?

gameID=45898 <---- that is unrelated. Just want to keep this anonymous.

Voteing to Concede to a Team
I'm just wondering if it would be possible for the DRAW votes and CONCEDE votes to be used together. If two people have been working together and will clearly win, right now, if everyone else wants to concede, only one of the victors can get the points. If DRAW could be used in conjunction, then the points could be split between DRAW voters. Obviously this would require good faith of those conceding to not choose DRAW.

RSS Feed for New Games?
Does the site support RSS feeds for new games? If not via the site, is there a way to do it via 3rd party?

I'm aware of the RSS feed for notices specific to myself. I like this feature. However, if I'm looking for new games I'd like to be able to apply filters and create an RSS feed for myself - for example if I was only interested in WTA games...whenever there was new posted WTA game it would go to my feed. Thoughts, workarounds?

I made a big map viewer (to switch between turns easily)
I wanted a way to switch between turns while viewing the big map, so I put together this simple viewer app quickly: https://vdiplo-bigmap.netlify.app/ Hint: you can use the arrow keys to switch between turns.

I am currently playing my first game ever, so this may not make a lot of sense to the more experienced among you (which is all of you). Let me know if you find this helpful or not.

Cancel not Draw!
I wish in wDip engine there was not a possibility to vote draw when all the starting powers are alive. Cause multiple games are played by rookies and they do several seasons and press "vote Draw". In this case we have misunderstanding in variant statistics - tons of draws with no combat at all. If all powers left on the board -> it's not a draw! Game should be cancelled!!!

Why does NMRing stop you rejoining games
I can understand why there’s a temporary ban on joining new games and making games but banning you from rejoining the game you were kicked from seems like it causes even more disruption to the game in question.

Disclaimer: I’m a bit salty about missing the deadline for a game by a few minutes because I misremembered when the timer would tick over
