05 Aug 20 UTC Spring, 1901: Hi, CoffeeAndKeyboards. I see that for my 2nd Duo game, I'm once again playing someone with a lot of experience. Well, let's have fun!
05 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1901: its flattering to hear that from someone who's better at normal dip games. Lets have fun indeed
05 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1903: I make no claim of being better at normal dip. I'm good, but I make some pretty bad mistakes. A lot of my success is simply my highest priority of not NMRing. I used to play only full press, but during the pandemic I found that intense negotiation had sometimes become too much for me while I was already stressed out, so now I'm learning how to play no press. It's a different game, but they're both fun.
05 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1903: so gunboat and 1v1, huh?
06 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1903: Yes. I also like gunboat with fog of war.
And speaking of mistakes, I just made a terrible one in another game. Oh well.
06 Aug 20 UTC Spring, 1904: i can teach you in 1v1, but i dont like fog of war tbh
06 Aug 20 UTC Spring, 1905: Some pointers about 1v1 would be great!
06 Aug 20 UTC Spring, 1905: it really varies on the variant, but in Duo, it has a surprising amount of strategies that can stem from certain openings. Your opening is great, but you messed up in a lot of mid game tactics. I'm planning to test out your opening in future games if you dont mind
06 Aug 20 UTC Spring, 1905: try to anticipate how your opponents will move depending on their builds and strategies. Duo is all about speed, and once that is out of the way, its about technique. Once that is out of the way, its about luck. But its all about exploiting weaknesses and/or going after playstyles countering your opponent's. I typically play a slow game on the left and go all in on the right. If you play on the middle you can overwhelm me, but you made the mistake of not opting to play more aggressive on the right side imo. because now, you cant defend your left without compensation for centers from the right
06 Aug 20 UTC Spring, 1905: thats it for my ramble. hopefully its comprehensible
06 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1905: I'm not certain I should say this during the game, but here it is. I was following the moves my opponent used to ultimately dominate the first Duo game I played. It took me a while to realize that as the game progressed, some of their moves were not just an optimal set of moves for any situation, but were shaped in reaction to my moves in that game, the openings I left and so forth. And it's hard for me to tell exactly which moves these were. So that's why my middle game was weaker than my opening.
06 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1905: so that's why lmao. If you continue to play, you'd soon come up with your own optimal response to enemy movements
07 Aug 20 UTC Another huge mistake from me. How could I fail to notice the threat to Web? Well, you've won this one, and I think I need to take a break from Dip again.
07 Aug 20 UTC GameMaster: Red voted for a Concede. If everyone (but one) votes concede the game will end and the player _not_ voting Concede will get all the points. Everybody else will get a defeat.
07 Aug 20 UTC Thanks for the advice! This map looks kind of simple at first glance, with its symmetric design, but I see now that it is quite complex. Would you say that it favors the aggressor? With all the non-center spaces, defense seems quite difficult to me.
07 Aug 20 UTC It really depends on the playstyle. I just happened to be faster because you're new to it. It does favor the aggressor but only to a current extent. It's all about having the most actively offense units while using as minimal units as possible to hold a sturdy defense
