This how the game works?

Macca, you're playing with the pre-1980 rules? Seriously?
Macca573 (1517 D)
23 Apr 22 UTC
I'm not sure, I don't know what the rules are.
Trieste to Ionian
Vienna to Naples
Budapest to Bulgaria
kaner406 (2061 D Mod (B))

@drano - does Mr. Finkelmuiyer's move to Bulgaria succeed? I was under the impression that the revised '81 version of the rules expressly forbids the Budapest to Bulgaria gambit in the opening round.
Didn’t the Corsican Protocol override that?
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
23 Apr 22 UTC
We simply need to confirm what ruleset we are playing by. In my experience, standard rules used if not mentioned are the '97 rules - which includes the Corsican Protocol as Amby mentioned.

If this is the case, Finkel's move to Bulgaria is considered valid.
Macca573 (1517 D)
23 Apr 22 UTC
what....
I was using the '86 rules, which famously nullifies the Corsican Protocol if there is a Russian player present. But since we don't have one yet, my move holds [see article 3, section 2, subsection 6, "balancing the game in the presence of Russia"].
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
23 Apr 22 UTC
Finkel -

I think you're mixing up your rule sets. Article 3, Section 2, subsection 6, "balancing the game in the presence of Russia" is part of the high controversial 2014 rules which introduced the Crimean Protocol in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine. Ended up causing quite the schism as well, but I digress.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
23 Apr 22 UTC
Remember though that under the 1687 rules, the Crimean Protocol results in the removal of one Russian army from the board for 2 years followed by an automatic Civil Disorder.
Well I'm glad we got that sorted.

So far only Macca, Mr F and I have got orders in. You all better start getting yours in soon, as there's only 9 hours left until the end of spring orders.
kaner406 (2061 D Mod (B))
24 Apr 22 UTC
@gopher - the 1987 ruleset you mean? obviously a typo.

If we're playing the '97 rules, and not the 2014 rules, then I will order:

Paris - Warsaw
Marseilles - Rumania
Brest - Sevastapol
Mr. Finkelmuiyer (1007 D)
24 Apr 22 UTC

I will assent to the '97 rules if we have a gentlemen's agreement to keep in the Triple-Axle Deplacement Double Bluff Maneuver. I know it's technically optional under '97, but I personally find that it really encapsulates the spirit of that decade.

This feels like it is just an intentional attempt to distract people from the Winning thread in order to bury it in hopes of it eventually locking with the Australian coalition winning.

BTW, the Winning thread would need to fall onto like the 5th or 6th page of threads in the forum.
Some great gains for the players who got their orders in. For those busy with conspiracy theories, they are clearly way behind the starter's gun in picking up some tasty SCs.
JECE (1534 D)
25 Apr 22 UTC
'97 ruleset with a concurrent game of Bourse, right? In that case, I'll release the Kraken in the Mid-Atlantic.

Fall orders:
Fleet Moscow move to Mid-Atlantic Ocean
Fleet Switzerland move to Mid-Atlantic Ocean
Army Iceland support hold Mid-Atlantic Ocean

Build phase:
Spawn Kraken in Mid-Atlantic Ocean

Mr. Finkelmuiyer, you can thank me later when the British Isles fall into the sea, eliminating your archnemesis Macca573.
Macca573 (1517 D)
25 Apr 22 UTC
Seeing the situation in England, I think it best I build A Nuclear Powerplant in Bulgaria. Might have to cut costs to get it done quickly before the kraken arrives.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
25 Apr 22 UTC
Ok look. Y'all are getting ridiculous. JECE, Macca - come on now. Amby is trying to reboot this, and we get this?

Since noone else seems to want to do it, I'll be our "GM" for the game and rules arbiter. Here's what we have:

We are using the '97 rule set. Corsican Protocol is in effect. Finkel has asked for consent to implement the Triple-Axle Deplacement Double Bluff Maneuver.

Amby - England
Macca - Turkey
Finkel - Austria
Kaner - France

We have Germany, Russia, and Italy left. We will give an additional 24 hours to get them filled, or move on.

Now that that's clear, JECE, are you interested in one of those powers?
JECE (1534 D)
25 Apr 22 UTC
I'll play both Germany and England with half strength units.
JECE (1534 D)
25 Apr 22 UTC
Sorry, I meant Germany and Italy
Ooh this is getting exciting! Thanks drano for stepping up for the GMing.
What happened in the adjudication? Or is it self assessed?
Does the GM adjudicate under the '97 rules? Last time I played '97, the GM was whoever controlled Clyde, but I forget if that was the actual rules or simply as a result of the GM passing out during the spring of 1904.
I guess it depends on how old school you want to go. Alan Calhamer had a very different take on on what preceded the '97 rules. As drano is GM he can weigh in on this one.
Based on the Powder barrel convention, the passage of three months without anyone posting on the Ankara Crescent thread means the Treaty of Hauserbluper comes into effect.

That treaty - I'm sure you all remember - means the last player to have posted (me) achieves the victory conditions of 18 SCs provided no-one else responds within a fortnight. That is only three days away.

Don't let anyone tell you I'm not fair and honorable reminding folks about these game rules.
Battalion (2386 D)

I believe I have missed the window to join. However, if I'm not mistaken the Second Geneva Convention means that, under such circumstances as described by The Ambassador whereby there is a period of prolonged inactivity, it is possible for a new player to join as the Swiss. I also exercise the right, as detailed in section 67 of the convention, to claim Marseilles without recourse.

"This feels like it is just an intentional attempt to distract people from the Winning thread in order to bury it in hopes of it eventually locking with the Australian coalition winning."--gopher
Totally wrong gopher. If I was worried about winning I would have kept my mouth shut about my imminent win in Ankara Crescent.
JECE (1534 D)
17 Aug 22 UTC
Battalion pulled the Burgundian Gambit. Luckily for kaner406, I control both Germany and Italy. Per the Helvetic Blasphemy rule of the Corsican Protocol, an Italo-German alliance can execute the Triple-Axle Deplacement Double Bluff Maneuver. So ordered.

Provocative Question
If Xi Jinping had been recruited as a long term, deep cover agent by the CIA (perhaps during his visit to Iowa) a la Günter Guillaume, Anthony Blunt or Eleanor Iselin, what would the CIA have him doing differently to sabotage China as a potential competitor of the USA?

It's like less than a month until summer here in Australia and we're going through a cold snap. Those in the northern hemisphere have you got similar whacky stuff happening with warmer than normal (or something else odd) going on?

New column in the variants list?
Was browsing statistics and was thinking it would be sweet to see the standard deviation of the performance values listed on the variants list page. That way you could essentially sort the collection by how balanced it is.

Tragedy of the Commons Rules Variant
I was thinking about what we see with the politics of climate change, how countries play the game of talking about reducing emissions but are hesitant to do so because they're afraid of being put at an economic disadvantage compared to their competitors. Not to get into a discussion of politics, more I thought about how this tragedy of the commons dynamic could be incorporated into a Diplomacy rules variant.

So Many Toxic Players??
Is it just me, or has the amount of toxic players on this site recently skyrocketed? Over the course of just a few games, I’ve seen people shoving strange moves in each others faces like a dog that crapped on the carpet, players belittling each other, piss poor attitudes after stabs, etc. - I don’t mean to complain, but I’m also seeing how it is effecting new players and this is generally something I can’t stand. Are points important?
Clearly a measure of a players ability can be glanced through points, but what are the pros and cons of rated and unrated games? Unrated games provide a bit more of a laid back attitude and from my experience are more open to draws, but at the same time when points are at stake players are less likely to miss turns and more likely to play to the best of their ability.
