For the record my crap orders are due to being away from my laptop and its spreadsheet.

Guys, sorry for intervening, but since obviously one of you is the god of Excel I would like to ask for a small help excel style.

Basically, Im using excel to record my football (soccer) stats with a friend.
So under cell D I enter my goals and under E I enter my opponent's goals
Thus, there is a list of game scores 1-0, 2-0 etc.

My problem is that I want to apply a formula where it will compare the numbers in cells D and E.

if D is bigger than E then it will add one point in cell I and
vice versa if E is bigger than D add a point in cell J.

Okay, try this:
Let's take row 1 as an example:
In the cell I1, you would enter =IF(D1>E1, "1", "0")
In cell J1, you would enter =IF(E1>D1, "1", "0")

Then you do this for all the rows (use the scrolling-copy function; not sure what it's called...) and underneath the last cell you would put a total counter, so, say you had 10 results (I1-10, J1-10) you would put:


For I Total:
=SUM(I1:I10)

For J Total:
=SUM(J1:J10)

Not sure if that's the most efficient way - I haven't used Excel properly in a while - but it works :)

Thanks it does work and it sounds simple. however when I try to put the formula for the total it does not work (!) and results to 0 !
I was wondering if the first formula can be continued to include all cells instead of making it one by one. that may eliminate the problem with thr sum total

I think perhaps taking the 1 and 0 out of quotation marks in the IF cells may work... I'm not entirely sure as I'm more used to using the IF statements with string...

Okay, just tested - taking them out of quotation marks works.

I'm not sure if there is a way to do it all in one cell - I will experiment and see if I can come up with something.

Oh, just to say - this also gives a draw a value of 0 for both. I hope that's okay...
