There are lots of home SC's that are adjacent, are you worried about that?
michael_b (952 D)
26 Aug 17 UTC
Yes! thanks for mentioning that. I also realized that. I think I might change that a little. But the main thing that it forces players to do is to communicate.
ubercacher16 (2196 D)
27 Aug 17 UTC
Yes, it does. I guess that is a plus, unless you get players who just don't communicate.

I have playtested and finalised my variant:

goo.gl/sSCsgf

Would someone be willing to help me implement it? I am willing to do as much of the work as I can but I haven't done it before.

I think variants are uploaded here: http://lab.diplomail.ru/
then come across to this site, but I'm not entirely sure how the system works since I'm not an admin

Made an account and posted in the forum there. Seems to have a similar interface to here and I cant upload anything.

Nice work! It looks like it will be a lot of fun to play, and I'll be eager to get a game of it started once it's added to the map pool.

Just a few aesthetic things:
Perhaps you could color in some more of that neutral territory to make it closer to the look of 1937. Places like Juneau, British Colombia, NC Canada, most of Australia, large parts of Africa, and the Caucuses can be colored in without affecting gameplay.

Also, the SC for Texas is in Louisiana, Madrid is on the coast instead of in the center of Spain, and Qatar's is in the UAE.

Gameplay wise, the map looks excellent.
Great job, coming along well. I do feel though that Germany isn't as strong as it should be based on history. Could you set the game 1 year later (1938) after Austria has been absorbed in the Anchluss?

@Vauban - It appeared in my spam, try that.

@ubercatcher - Thanks! I think I close to being done. But it needds to look less messy. Ill see if I can redo the whole thing on a canvas 3x the size to fit in the text.

@Technistar. Texas is bigger so I chose that. I would love it if you could tell me what you mean about coloring in the neutral SCs! :D

@TheAmbassador - I thought about that (austria being German)! But I still wonder if that can cripple Italy.

Also Ambassador, unless everyone attacks her, I can see Germany getting 4 or 5 builds in year 1 effortlessly.
Yeah, I'm just trying to also provide balance to the colonial powers, particularly England, who tend to dominate these style of maps. As Germany lost its colonial possessions after WW1 its in a very limited starting position. I guess I'm also trying to ideally see a map that is more historically accurate with the Germans already ramping up their military in the lead up to WW2, while appeasing powers (England and France) and the Soviets (as Stalin actually trusted Hitler) were slow to the party. Ditto America due to their isolationist policies.

But its your variant, so feel free to do with it what you think is best.

I was talking about the land territory without supply centers. Though if you wish to also have some neutral centers colored in, you can do what South American Supremacy did and have some centers with a neutral box around them but the rest of the land colored in. This is what I plan to do for my Divided States map.

Hey hivemind,
I'm not very interested in setting up a web server to test bug fixes, but I don't mind doing the programming. So is there anyone in here who has the test server set up and would like to help out? Or is there another place to do the tests? I'm trying to fix a bug in the Classic Fog of War variant...

Hello Techno, not yet. I was playing on a Band Tour so I haven't checked in in a while. Hopefully I can get someone on labdip.ru.

First game on A World at War (f2f) ends with a 5 way draw after USSR places draw vote due a a 4-way effort against her. Draw between:
USSR, Nazi Germany, USA, Brazil and Thailand.

https://imgur.com/a/sBnrQ

End Results: (Spring 1964)
Soviet Union - 34 Supply Centers
United States - 32 Supply Centers
Nazi Germany - 28 Supply Centers
Thailand - 19 Supply Centers
Brazil - 13 Supply Centers

Basic Summary:

1937-1940:

Russia gets 8 builds in year one and has the highest SC count for the entire game, even after her peak at (40 SCs) in which her decline almost allowed the USA to overtake her.
New diplomacy player played China and was immediately carved up by USSR+Japan.

Alliances:
Germany+Russia+England
England+Turkey
Brazil+USA+Mexico+Thailand

1940-1950

Japan gets demolished by Russia and Thailand. Thailand was able to expand without obstruction due to the Soviet+German stab on England.
Italy and French remained at war until it got them both killed by Nazi Germany.
Turkey succumbed to the Russian flood.
US convinces Brazil to stab Mexico with him and it goes really well.

Remaining Players:

Russia - 35 SCs
Germany - 24 SCs
USA - 23 SCs
Brazil - 13 SCs
Thailand - 12 SCs
England - 12 SCs
Turkey - 4 SCs
France - 2 SCs
Italy - 1 SCs
Mexico - 1 SCs

I'd suggest you PM the admin over on lab.diplomail.ru about it. Send him the map files (including the color map that PHP uses to identify provinces), though he may ask for more. I'm not entirely sure myself and I'll be doing the same in a couple of weeks.

Update:
I have taken the liberty of adapting this variant for vDiplomacy. I kept most things the same, though I changed a few territory names around slightly and clarified a few things on the map. The adaptation did not take long, especially when compared to Divided States, so I'll get the variant over on lab.diplomail.ru to ensure that nothing is missing (such as a skipped adjacency or supply-center). The variant should be ready to go online here in a few weeks.

Can't send press during build phase?
Hi, during one of my games, I seem to not be able to send press during build phase? I have been away from the site for a few years, so is this a new feature/rule I'm unaware of or is there something wrong with the game I'm in?

Email notifications?
Does vDiplomacy not have an option to send email notifications upon important game events?

I just recently set up a game, then came back to check on it a couple days later only to find that I'd NMR'd it without even knowing. I couldn't find anything in my email, even in Spam or Trash.

WTA vs Draw-Disvaluated Scoring
What about adding Draw-Disvaluated Scoring to vDip?

It's a mix of Calhamer Scoring (aka Winner-Takes-All) with Draw-Zero Scoring, and has the fortunate effect of pushing players towards a solo unless a draw is absolutely necessary. Solos work like in WTA, but draws are different.

PPSC vs SoS
I couldn’t find the answer in Help.
I know PPSC means in a solo the points are allocated based on supply centre count while in a draw it reverts to an equal split of points like DSS/WTA
For SoS over on WebDip, in a draw the points are allocated on a sum of Squares principle. But Help section doesn’t say what happens in a solo. Same method or reverts to winner takes all? I’m assuming SoS whether draw or solo but checking
Thanks

A noob question about R###
Hey Guys, new to the site (and fairly new to diplomacy).
Next to players names are their diplomacy points, I get all that, but next to that is an R### number, I may be missing it, but I cant see this in the rules. (ie name is NAME(1000/R92). What does this number mean?

Hi Sengoku Nagashino players - please deposit your thoughts here for designer digestion as the first round of games resolves.

Please do not directly comment on the situation/players etc. of any active games. Please limit your comments to the variant design itself, as it appears at gamestart. Once a game has completed, it is fair game for analysis, but not before please.

Deep philosophical question about American culture
So I teach at a major public research university. And I keep noticing that my male students in their early 20s seem with a surprisingly high probability to be intimately familiar with the movie Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. This movie came out when I was in high school. And at the same time, they seem ignorant of In Living Color which is readily available on Youtube. So why DBAMTSCWDYJITH and not, for example, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka?
