1600 and 1900

These Diplomacy variants look beautiful and I have wanted to play them for years. Is anybody here working on bringing them to vDip?

Here is some more information:

Original 1600 homepage (where the author gave commentary):
https://web.archive.org/web/20060910013443/http://web.telia.com/~u13214882/1600.htm

It seems that a Realpolitik version of 1600 can be found here:
http://www.int.graue-substanz.net/variants/geographical/europestart.htm#1600

A more up-to-date version of 1900 (and commentary from the author) can be found here:
http://www.diplom.org/Online/variants1.html#numbers

Our competitors at PLAYDiplomacy seen to have a version of 1900 running.

The 1600 veriant is just a map variant, that is really easy to do.
I tried the 1900-variant some time ago, but the 1/2-strenght moves (like the suez canal) are always hard to do and make problems all the times...

The Diplomatic Pouch judges also have 1900 running. One of the Aussie players loves it, and I can put him in touch with you if you need players. I'm sure he'd be up for a game.

Oli: Sweet! So does that mean that we can put 1600 on the list? It's good to hear that you've already tried your hand at implementing 1900.

A_Tin_Can: I don't think I'll play a game anytime soon, but it is good to know that option. Though I couldn't figure it out: the DPjudge is PBEM?

Maybe tobi has a good idea on how to do the 1/2 power move over south africa...
The rest is rather easy to do for this variant.

Could you use the code from the Pirates variant? One of the units in that has an attack strength of two...
Correct Cap'n, Pirates was coded up for "units" to have different strengths: frigates double clippers, and the hurricane ten times a clipper.

I agree, that this move around South Africa is definitely the complex part of this variant and I cannot think of a trick to avoid making adjustments directly in the adjudicator. The implementation of the rules itself in the adjudicator shouldn't be a big problem, since the adjudicator is designed in a way, that makes it relatively easy to adjust unit strength in such a way or to prohibit some supports. But as you would be directly working on the adjudicator you would have to give some thought to possible new paradoxes and other unwanted effects, as well (I don't believe there are any new paradoxes but haven't thought about that systematically yet). So the solution might need to be a more elaborate one.
The 'forbidden supports' rule also causes some work on the order interface(s) if you want to have a clean solution, but that wouldn't be the big part of this rule change.
All in all I believe, this rule is possible with our system but it is definitely a more complex one that will need some time, since such rule changes 'make problems all the time'. I can give it a try myself if somebody else wants to serve the rest of the variant.

So The Russian Emergency Measures Rule isn't complicated to code?

The EMR is rather easy to do.
So I start working on the maps and links and tobi starts thinking about the adjucator.
Deal?

Maybe use the pirates-code as an inspiration.. :-) The other variant using different strength units (Imperium) is disabled at the moment because all kind of strange problems....

Ok, then I will take a look at the pirates variant. We probably have it a bit easier here, since only half strength moves and no supports are allowed.

Smallmap is looking nice. Maybe I can do the largemap tomorrow...
Anpther "problem" is gibraltar. It's a Sea-Space for convoy, but you can move there with an army to block the space...

PS: The 1600 map got implemented by my realpolitik->webdip converter with only a few issues to resolve (besides redrawing the maps).
This might be hitting the site real soon too...

And I just CDed a game so I'd have the time for a 1600 kick off this weekend (...or maybe I just screwed up again.)
Oli, you should know to do backups. Which VC do you use? Tortoise? TFS?
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
06 Jan 16 UTC
I use Tortoise.
Usually I make V 1.0 of a variant and commit them into the VC.
Somehow I had not set a branch (not sure how this could happen). So after submitting I switchend to the master-branch to submit the files again, but now they disappeared. And because I have no name for the branch I submitted the variant-files I can't switch. Really strange. I have a "backup" of an earlier dev-version, and all my coordinates are in the SQL-database, so I can get these, but I did put a lot of effort in optimizing the readability of the maps and this is now lost...
Well, I have some free time tonight to reconstruct most of the work.

Thanks for taking the time Oli. I know it always sucks having to redo any tech work (especially the fiddly stuff).
Ah, tortoise. I hate it sometimes. It's what we use at VSI.

New Thread Idea
Does anyone know Polish History? Did The Deluge cause such material damage that it doomed Poland to economic and political death spiral, did it devastate the proto-bourgeois, densely populated Northwest at a key moment within a republic when it was fighting with the rural, agrarian South and East thus stunting an incipient movement towards urbanization and development or did it not really have any long term effect?

Scramble for Africa Variant - Gauging Interest
I was wondering how interested people would be in a Scramble for Africa variant. I'm already making one for my friends and me to use, so I could easily put it on the lab for testing once it's done.

Where do you post your variant map ideas?
Working on the Calhamer Prototype variant and interested in getting opinions on map design to keep it authenticate. In some cases the maps aren't clear and I'm interested in advice. Where's the best spot folks have found for posting?

Diplomacy: Is Germany Too Weak?
I noticed that Germany is considerably weaker in Diplomacy than it's historical counterpart. In game, Germany can very easily be knocked out by England and France. However, historically Germany was able to fight competently on three separate fronts. Does anybody feel that Germany is a little misrepresented in game?
More importantly, are there any variants that address this?

Feedback for 1v1 Cold War on WWIV map
Hi folks, some of you may have heard me talk on the podcast about bringing the WWIV map to a Cold War circa 1984 1v1 variant. Interested in your thoughts about whether I use the standard WWIV map, the v6.2 version (is there any actual difference in the map itself?) or whether the sealane version would be better. Thoughts?
