Hi everyone!
Thought I'd finally join you all. Don't think I'll play a game for a while, but I wanted to reserve my username.

Would it be possible for a dialogue to come up for unsaved orders when you exit/switch to a different country's chat as it does with an unsaved message?

Looking for VDip old timers for a project
Hi folks

Got an idea I wouldn't mind bouncing off a few VDip old timers. If your blood doesn't go red hot when you see a posting under my handle and you have maybe a couple of extra hours to give back to the Dip community each fortnight or month, I wouldn't mind starting a PM dialogue with you. If my subsequent PM discussion interests you, that's fantastic. If not, I won't stress either.

I feel like playing against someone, and someone good. I can't stomach the thought of playing one more game of diplomacy and wasting any more of my precious breath. You pick the variant : g/i, f/a, fg/rt, g/r I don't care as long as it's you versus me. Bring a lunch!

Is "Throwing" a Game Allowed?
I'm playing a game where one player has admitted to throwing a game to another because he's in a difficult position and isn't willing to play it out.

This game is becoming critically turned around because of this, so I'm wondering if it's possible to get the game cancelled because of it. I don't really want to do this since it's a neutral throwing the game to my ally who's been cooperating with me since the beginning, but it seems like the right thing to do.

Rinascimento Bets
I know that Rinascimento already divides PPSC pots based on relative strength. Is there a way to mod it so that the initial bet reflects the faction played? For example, Pisa would have a bet 1/4 the size of Venezia.

Is the Civil War map fair?
...so I've played the map a few times now, and it seems rather biased towards the South.
Argotitan (1182 D)

The South has many more SCs in Latin America than the North has in Canada. Expansion in the midwest is biased towards the south since Tennessee, Missouri, Chicago, Milwaukee, Mineanapolis, and Minatoba are all adjacent in contrast to Ohio which is only adjacent to Michigan, Ontario, Montreal, and Quebec.

The South also seems to get a chaotic advantage from Missouri to Richmond since Chicago, Missouri, Tennessee, and Richmond all border Kentucky. Only Indianapolis, Ohio, and West Virginia border Kentucky for the North.

The naval situation is a little biased too since Cape May borders D.C. Once the South controls it, it can more easily flank the Richmond/D.C. border than the North. East Coast borders 4 SCs, but it doesn't border Richmond. The Caribbean also offers 4 SCs relatively closer to the mid-Atlantic. The North, in contrast, has to go to Nova Scotia, Greenland, Ungava, and Anchorage.

Even if the North moves its fleets all the way down around California and into Latin America to grab SCs, the fact is it's a lot faster for the South to bring its fleets back into the fight after capturing the Caribbean. It can also march some armies across land to take the Pacific SCs away faster than the North can catch up. Ohio at best is 6 spaces away from Vancouver, and 7 spaces away from Washington and Oregon. Tennessee is 4 spaces away from Chihuahua and 5 spaces away from San Diego.

I'm just not a very big fan of this map now. It seems interesting, but when you look at it closer, it's not that good.

I like playing the north more though, I think I have won more often playing it :P
Argotitan (1182 D)
06 Nov 15 UTC
I've won as both sides. Yesterday, I beat someone much better than me as South, and someone much worse than me as North.

I just objectively look at the map, and it doesn't seem fair.
Argotitan (1182 D)
10 Nov 15 UTC
I just finished another game, and won as the North from using the Great Lakes. You really have to use them to control the South's expansion in the midwest since they can't move into Lake Superior or Michigan. From there, you take Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago and wrap things up.

I guess the stats are biased towards the South since most people don't take advantage of this. They don't see how NYS is a canal territory.
Argotitan (1182 D)
10 Nov 15 UTC
Also, use the Great Lakes to convoy from NYC to the Midwest when Ohio's clogged:

I do think the south is tougher to play, Argotitan and I just finished one and if I get a chance I'll post some more specific thoughts
Devonian (1887 D)

The best way to test it would be to play 2 games with the same player. Each taking both sides. Argotitan, if you're willing, send me the links.
Argotitan (1182 D)

Well I mean I played as South against someone who had a 1700+ ranking:

Maybe you're a better player. You do have 53% wins.

Hmm, the above people have a point with the North. I like to open with F Ohio in my Union games too :P
So does anyone here want to play a live version of this tonight?
Maybe another night. It's late and I'm gonna go crash.

I just finished one, and I think that it's unbalanced. Not that it's impossible for the North to win, but in the first year North has to outguess South a pair of times, and only then North has a chance

I would like to play this variant, but I can't find it. What is it called?
Argotitan (1182 D)
17 Nov 15 UTC
Union has to build a fleet in NYC and use the Erie Canal to take Ontario in the first year before support moving into Minneapolis in the second year. Otherwise, it gets cornered and has nowhere to expand. After that, use the Great Lakes to support move into Milwaukee and Chicago.

Devonian (1887 D)

I'm Playing 2 games against Xildur, who is similar skill as me, and it seems like the south has an advantage. At least at the start. But, the victory conditions are very high. I am interested to see what happens as the game progresses.
Argotitan (1182 D)
20 Nov 15 UTC
In neither of your games did Union move its fleet from NYC to NYS in the opening turn to follow onwards to Ontario. I'd expect South to win both.
Argotitan (1182 D)
20 Nov 15 UTC
Also, in both games, you can see the South is controlling the midwest. The North is going to get cornered off and run out of space to expand.
Devonian (1887 D)
23 Nov 15 UTC
I just finished 2 games with Xildur, and I believe the south has an advantage.
El Cremoso (1728 D)

South has an advantage, but it is a great 1x1 map. Great practice to play from both a strong and weak position on the board.

What are they going to do with Helmut Schmidt's hoard of cigarettes? Didn't he supposedly have a stash of menthol cigarettes sufficient to support his three packs a day habit through his 100th birthday?
