Anyone want to take this world game?
I'm playing in World Peace Simulator-2, gameID=39267 , but I'm about to go away and am unsure if I'll be able to input my moves. If you are interested, PM me and I'll tell you what country I'm playing. I don't want to just say it here as the game is anonymous. Then I can use the country switch tool to give it away. Please take a look if you are interested.
Thanks!

Crashed Europa Renovatio Games
At least two games of the new Europa Renovatio variant have had problems and crashed, although so far most of these crashes have been resolved. This is the first time I've encountered this issue here at vDip. How concerned should we players be about this?

This is really a message for mods. .. but I am not getting any response in the ModForum. I have been unable to load orders in the above game for a number of days now .. and am receiving increasingly threatening messages about missing turns and a possible ban. I can't communicate with any of the other players in the game. Does anyone know what is going on?

"Theoretical" Game
So there's a map called Fubar (https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=39). Let's say I created a game called "HA! Pranked!" where it was choose your own country (So I choose the big one), and then I make the SC count to win 8 (greater than any other country has, except the big one which starts with 10). 5 other people are foolish enough to join the game. Would I just win automatically then?

Move Didn't Go Through
I was looking for clarification from the Mod team as to why a certain unit was not dislodged in a gunboat game with 1.5 day phases, so I sent a message in the Mod forum yesterday morning. I haven't received a response and the next phase of the game is about to go through. What is the proper action in this situation? Should I vote extend and hope for a last-minute extend? Thanks for advice.

Google Translate Game
Hello everyone! I am looking for six other players to join a game of Classic(probably, another variant if more want to play), public press, where every player must send messages after putting them through several other languages and then back into English.

I am open to suggestions on exactly which languages and how many there should be.

I should add I really like the approach with http://www.copypanthers.com/lost-in-translation-agency/

Far simpler way of managing compared to previous Google Translate games.

I assume we're playing unrated as its meant to be a fun game?

OR if that last sentence was translated using the service: Do you think you will play surprisingly because it will be a fun game?
ubercacher16 (2196 D)
13 Jul 19 UTC
Of yes, unrated definitely.
Elipticon (736 D)

I'm not going to play, since it's a bit too chaotic for my tastes, but I think it would be good to set the game to Public Press. That way people who aren't playing can see the chat.
Elipticon (736 D)

Edit: I messed around with the Lost in Translation Agency, and the thing doesn't like apostrophes, and instead replaces them with '
Yes you need to write them in full eg you are instead of you're, do not instead of don't. Easily fixed.
Alakazam (981 D)
13 Jul 19 UTC
I don't get the idea of the game. Can you explicitly explain it with an example of a game situation?
@Alakazam - it is played like a normal game of Diplomacy. The only difference being when you post messages you write them first (but don't send on vDip yet), then put them into something like http://www.copypanthers.com/lost-in-translation-agency (although the origin games played like this used a more complicated approach with Google Translate) and then you paste and send the translated version to the player you are talking with.

The idea is to simulate where people misunderstand each other due to translations not being perfect.

A previous game was discussed on the Diplomacy Games podcast. Have a listen at http://diplomacygames.com/diplomacy-games-podcast-episode-4-shownotes-world-war-iv-google-translate-diplomacy/
(that podcast link has specific examples in it)

I am down.

You can add me.

So when we send message to others, we can choose whatever language we want I assume? For instance if I send a message to England, I can send it Turkish but I don't need to let him know that this is Turkish. He has to figure out himself I guess?
Lightsong (984 D)

I would like to join.
Elipticon (736 D)
13 Jul 19 UTC
You know what, scratch what i said previously, I do want to join. I also think that there should be some ground rules for how this works.

The lost in translation agency doesn't like apostrophes and only has a dozen or so languages, so I'd say that Google Translate would be better; some of the rarer languages have really shotty translations (see Somali.)

There also should be a number of translations you have to make before you can post your message. In My opinion 6 languages scrambles that text enough that it could be misinterpreted, but still be generally understood.
A couple of things:

@Alakazam - it doesn't work that way. Did you read/listen to the info I posted? You start generally in English then translate depending on the process chosen into one or repeated multiple languages, before finally translating back to English, which is what you post.

@Elipticon - I would generally agree that a dozen or more languages would make it more entertaining. The trouble is the practicalities of doing this manually would become painful quickly and I can see people then abandoning the concept or CDing. The most entertaining translator was Akuna but it is no longer available. So something like http://www.copypanthers.com/lost-in-translation-agency or https://www.funnytranslator.com/ might be best.

Or we following the format of the previous Translate game (see https://www.vdiplomacy.net/forum.php?viewthread=60236#60236) or a summary is in the podcast show notes page at http://diplomacygames.com/diplomacy-games-podcast-episode-4-shownotes-world-war-iv-google-translate-diplomacy/

I'm going to hard cap this at nine players. The variant options are: 1600, 1800 - Empires and Coalitions, Aberration V, War of Austrian Succession, and Western World 901. We can pick which one democratically, if that doesn't work I'll just choose.

@Amby, the copy panther site hasn't been working for me. However I believe that is because I am in China right now. I will be in countries with normal internet starting in a week. Perhaps we could postpone the game start until then?

Is a dozen, or six languages the best number?
Alakazam (981 D)

Got it, you can count me in!
Alakazam (981 D)

@ubercacher16 I vote for 1600
ubercacher16 (2196 D)
14 Jul 19 UTC
1600: 1
1800 - Empires and Coalitions: 0
Aberration V: 0
War of Austrian Succession: 0
Western World 901: 0

I'll put my vote in later.
Mike213 (744 D)
14 Jul 19 UTC
I vote for Aberration V
@ubercacher

No rush to start, so lets wait until you get back to the west where you can try copy panther to see if that works best. It automatically does 8 translations. But as pointed out by a few people, it and similar sites don't really produce truly whacky translations.

I've played two translation games here and I think the whackier the translations the harder but more entertaining the gameplay is.

I am fine with 1600, 1800 and War of Austrian Succession.

Depending on how we want to approach rules for what languages are used for translating, Aberration using fictional nations I think rules it out.

And Western World 901 is similarly only best if we set up rules to use a translation service that covers off the various nations across Asia and Africa. Asia we may be ok, but Africa I think is more problematic.
Elipticon (736 D)
14 Jul 19 UTC
I'll vote for Aberration V, but If we get another player then something like Modern Diplomacy II or Napoleonic would work for me.
Agree.
Elipticon (736 D)
14 Jul 19 UTC
@Ambassador Africa is covered. Google Translate includes Hausa (Nigeria) and Ethiopian.
Elipticon (736 D)
14 Jul 19 UTC
And if you want to spruce things up, then Sudanese, Somali, Swahili, Zulu, and Afrikaans are also available.
ubercacher16 (2196 D)
14 Jul 19 UTC
@Amby,

I think translating an English message through several languages and then back into English is the best way to go. No need to use actual powers languages.

For those that were in this cancelled game (over the technical gaff beyond our control), I’ve recreated the game as Decompressive Bilateral Backseat Orchidectomy. Message me, G-Man, for the password. This is just a restart for the same group of players that had already been playing this game. So, no newcomers please.
