Enlightenment & Succession variant.

In the game at http://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=12197, France has managed to build in Eire, even though this is not listed as a 'build anywhere' variant. Confusing if not plain wrong. Help please; this spoils an otherwise good variant.

Blind Dip 0.2, DO NOT REPLY, pm interest instead
I'd be willing to GM a 'blind diplomacy' game similar to one that flopped due to CD about 6 months back.

PM me with your interest (to keep the game anonymous) and I will accept the first 7 players with RR > 90%. Rules forthcoming...

China, land of confused children......discuss
So a friend of mine is having a birthday on Tuesday. On Sunday, it will be Chinese New Year. What must life be like for Chinese kids with birthdays over the last few weeks? I must admit my suspicion of any calender that yields a number of birthdays per year via a random stochastic process.

Australia has now implemented a national policy barring children in public schools from having candles as part of birthday celebrations because of the germ spreading associated with blowing out said candles. Beyond the fascistic nanny state aspect of a Federal Government taking an interest in such matters at all, can any right thinking person take seriously a country that would empower such authorities?

Contract NON-Anon Gunboat VI
The purpose of this Special Rules Private game is to have an enjoyable old style (= non Anonymous) Gunboat game among gentlemen who have read, agreed, accepted each of the following rules and who promise to observe them carefully.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
02 Jan 13 UTC
The main goal of the Contract is to have a game that never stops and that goes ahead quickly. That's why many standard rules have been modified or cut out.
The first thing you promise is that you won't NMR, so if you have some engagements in your schedule the next 2 months, you can stop reading: this is not the game for you.
The second thing you promise is that you will never forget that this game must go on quickly. This game is addressed to those people who can check a game *at least* twice a day almost everyday.

THE CONTRACT
1. You won't NMR. Please do not join if you may stay away from your computer in the next few months.
2. Each time you log in the game, you decide and FINALIZE your orders before you log out. Saving orders is not allowed under any circumstance.
3. If you're the last one who finalizes, you must refresh the game page and finalize your orders for the next phase.
4. If you have to retreat your last unit in Autumn and you can't retreat it into a SC, you must disband it. Thanks for the game, mate, we wish you better luck next time! :)
5. This is the first game you'll check each time you log in VDiplomacy. Please don't get caught like you logged in the site 2 hours ago, when the current phase was already started, and you didn't put your orders in. Please never forget that having your Contract-Gunboat orders FINALIZED is your FIRST PRIORITY each time you log in VDiplomacy. Also, please refresh your homepage before you log out the site, so you can check if the game has progressed to a new phase.
6. One of the goals of rules from 2 to 5 is to have a quasi-live game. What's hoped is to play *at least* 2 phases a day everyday. However, in order to handle exceptional circumstances in which you may not have access to the internet, the phase lenght is set to 37 hours. Gentlemen, please don't abuse this.
7. Voting for Pauses, Extensions and Cancel is not allowed under any circumstance. Voting for a Draw is not allowed during the first 4 years.
8. In the rare case an unpredictable issue keeps you away from the internet long enough to risk a NMR, you'll do your best to find a sitter or someone to send the game to, using Country-Switch Feature in your Settings page. Please mind:
- Sitters can't stay anonymous and must be announced with a short post on this thread, both as they're hired and as they're fired; the sitter must confirm with a short message on this thread.
- Please try to find your sitter (or the person you switch your Country to) among those people who log in VDip OFTEN. Also, before he accepts the task, he must read this post and this Contract. Please tell him to do so.
- This possibility has been given to you to handle sudden, exceptional and short RL issues. Please don't join the game if you already know you'll need a sitter at some point.
9. If, notwithstanding all, someone CDs, I'll post a "Please take over this Country" on this thread and the game will go on whether someone subs or not.
10. Other parameters are: cheap 10 D buy-in; Random Country; PPSC; Non Anon; No Press; RR 90+ MinPhs 100+; NMR Policy ∞/off.
11. Rules looks simple enough, but if you need clarifications you're encouraged to ask your question on this thread before the game starts. Please try to figure out what could make you not playing by the contract and ask for advices if you find some issue ("What if..."). If there's no solution, please consider this may not be the right SRG for you.
12. Once you read this whole post, all rules are clear, you accept them, you promise to observe them, just say you're in and I will put you in the signup list.
13. Map are pre-choosen depending on the number of joiners and the Victory Condition will be set on "half+1" whether it's the default or not. Maps are:
- 6 players: American Conflict. SCs required for solo win: Default 29 of 56
- 7 players: Abstraction III. VC: Default 25 of 48 SCs
- 8 players: Africa. VC: 32 of 63
- 9 players: Indians of the Great Lakes. VC: 27 of 52
-10 players: Modern Diplomacy II. VC: Default 33 of 64
-11 players: Classic - Crowded. VC: Default 18 of 35
-12 players: Fantasy World. VC: Default 30 of 58
-13 players: Imperial Diplomacy II. VC: 87 of 172
-15 players: Known World 901. VC: Default 55 of 109
-17 players: World Diplomacy IX. VC: Default 44 of 86
-19 players: Haven. VC: 52 of 102
14. Signup will stop 24 hours after the 6th has joined. If more players than a map can keep signed up.... I'm sorry for the last ones who signed up. I hope to see players resulted in excess in Contract VI.
When you sign up you accept to play any of the mentioned Maps. Conditional signups are not allowed so please don't signup if you think you won't play one of these Maps.
The point is that a Gunboat-lover should enjoy the non-anonymity and the fast play the Contract provides. You shouldn't care what Map.
15. This is a Gunboat. At no point during the game players are allowed to talk to ANYONE else (Mums, Wives & GFs included :D) about it or of it or of ANY topic anyhow related to it, in ANY form (Forum, PMs, Email, phone, voice, etc...), and for ANY reason.
Only exception is the Modforum for the purposes the Modforum has.
16. As the game starts, this "CONTRACT NON-Anon GUNBOAT - VI" thread is intended to be CLOSED and no-one is allowed to post on it. Only exceptions are: 1) ME, when item #9 says I must (Take over CD Adv.); 2) ME, if the thread risks to "die" (I'll just bump it); 3) any player when item #8 says he must (Sitters).
Please NEVER break the silence, even if you are eliminated before the game finishes: this thread re-opens as the game is OVER and EoGs and any other comment are welcome AFTER that.
17. Once the signup is closed, I will create the Gunboat and PM you the PW. As the last one joins the Gunboat... golden silence. :)
18. This is an INVITATIONAL Private game. - - Password has been given to you for your use only, you're not allowed to tell it to anyone under any circumstance.

Any Gentlemen up for it?

@peregrintook2990. Thanks for keeping the signup list updated, but the reason why item #12 says that "... *I* will put you in the signup list" is that I need to check whether you meet the requirements before I can allow you in.
That said, the answer to your question is that you clearly read carefully item #14, but unfortunately you didn't read as much carefully item #10 because you haven't played 100 phases yet.
I can't allow you in, sorry. I hope you'll join one of the next CGs, after you'll have played your 100th phase. :)

Thanks everyone who partecipated this Contract Gunboat VI and congrats to the winners. Also, congrats to everyone for playing the most regular CG until now: only 3 infractions were detected!

The game was rather slow but still just within acceptable limits.

All details at:
http://i.imgur.com/bEWg5Ck.png

So its pace was similar to CG-I, but much slower than last 3 CGs. The game was very regular so... what happened? Not a big issue, but unfortunately some players didn't log in as often as it was hoped. "At least twice a day" should mean "3-4-5-10-20 times a day in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening..." and not "once after dinner and once before sleeping, 2 or 3 hours later"! :)
Also, looks like basically nobody refreshes his page before logging out (item #5). Pity.

So. I hope you all are willing to add your EoG comments on this Thread, and I'd like to have you all in the next Contract Gunboat VII.

Iroquois EoG- Basically a defensive game for me. Went after the Ottawa in an attempt to take a second corner and secure my position. also made a slight, feeble attempt at Eire, but was quickly stalemated by both. After a short war with Eire and a long battle gaining me only 1 center against Ottawa, I set up my stalemate lines and watched and prayed that the others could stop Eire if he went for a Solo.
Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))
29 Jan 13 UTC
Ottowa EoG - Basically an echo of what BH said. I went to Lyn to start to try to signify a willingness to ally with Iro, but he supported Mis in instead so I was forced onto the defensive for most of the rest of the game. I tried to help Alo set up a stalemate line but that came down to guesswork in the end, so we lost it.
After that I tried to support hold Mis once, realised this was probably useless and so I helped Alo and Hur gain a little more ground on him, but this was doomed to failure also. I was very pleased that Iro stopped attacking me when he did because that meant that Mis would take a very long time to break my defences, and Erie came to my rescue before that happened, making Mis support hold me.

GG everyone!
Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))
29 Jan 13 UTC
Correction - Mis didn't support hold me, just stopped attacking me. Same effect though.

Also, I tend to log in quite a lot in the afternoon and early morning, but between it's not really possible. I figured that since I'm on and off for 6 or so hours in the afternoon and an hour in the morning each day though, that shouldn't really be a problem...

Erie EoG - I started the game out way too greedy (never played a game like this before and I figured I could afford to be selfish because people couldn't team up against me as easily), trying to stretch out as far as I could the first year. I was able to hold on to my territories for a year or two, but then people started pressing in on all sides. I tried to offer an alliance to Iroquois, but he instead took Seneca from me. I was able to retreat and regroup, deciding to wait and see what developed throughout the board.

I saw that Kaskasia and Ojibwe were pretty locked up, and Iroquis and Mississagua had poor access to me. Otawatami and Algonquin were fighting as well, so I saw an opportunity to expand towards northern Michigan. I was able to make solid progress against Ota, and during this time, I was lucky that Huron started attacking Mississagua (if they had remained allies I don't think my position would have been nearly as strong). With Miss and Huron fighting, I was able to gain control of Sarnia and block up passage of fleets from both Miss and Iro.

After Ota was eliminated, Algonquin was an easy next target, having only 2 SCs. It was around this time that I started to see myself as 'in control' of the game - Ojibwe and Kas were locked up, and Ottawa, Miss and Iro couldn't expand anywhere. It was also at this time that I realized that Miss and Iro had created a stalemate line, and as long as they were allied it was impossible for me to break through. Between them and Ottawa, they had exactly 26 SCs, meaning that it was impossible for me to get a solo victory. Nevertheless, I wanted to narrow down the draw, so I began moving west. With a lack of fleets in Lake Michigan and only a narrow passage by land, I wouldn't have been able to make progress against Kaskasia, so I began moving around to Ojibwe. With an attack from behind as well as pressure from the front from Kas, he fell relatively quickly. By this time everyone else had voted for a draw, and if I had started fighting against Kas he would have had position on me with fleets in Lake Michigan, so I had no choice but to take the draw.

GG everyone!
This was my first Contract GB game, but I really enjoyed the style and quick gameplay, and I'd love to play it again in the future!
butterhead (1272 D)
30 Jan 13 UTC
@B-Rich- taking Seneca from you was premature. I thought I saw expansion opportunities, but I guessed wrong on the moves of others so you still kept growing, so I had to lock it up and force your hand into moving against someone else haha.
B-RICH94 (1859 D)
30 Jan 13 UTC
It was a good move for you, since Mississagua turned out to be good ally to you throughout the game. My initial thought was that the two of us could have allied against Mississagua, which might have resulted in more opportunity to expand for you, but you did a good job at securing your position in a draw early on.
butterhead (1272 D)
30 Jan 13 UTC
well I figured that I had 2 options if I allied with Mississagua. I could stick to him and ensure a stalemate, or I could gobble him up and chance someone else chiming in and blocking further expansion. had I been able to take the entire East side, I likely would have hit Mississagua.
B-RICH94 (1859 D)
30 Jan 13 UTC
It ended up being a smart decision; if the two of you were fighting I might have put more pressure up north and may have potentially tried for a solo.

Huron EoG.
I'm not used to call unluck when I lose, I usually try to understand my mistakes. But I feel like I didn't make much more mistakes than usual this time. The biggest one was surely in Fall 1501, when I ordered SLH to cover the wrong SC. Sanilac was better, hu? :)
So, having Eire as enemy, I looked for Missisauga's alliance letting him in Cal next turn. Not a great alliance, but it worked well enough for several years. Being surrounded by him, I could only expand towards Eire... and this was good! since I was at war with Eire. I was able to take Alm, soon lost while taking back Sanilac.
But in 1507 something changed. It was time I was trying to repositioning to take back Alm and in Spring Mississauga showed a support to it. Fall looked the right time! Unluckily, in the meanwhile Iroquois showed the same support to Alm for him. Since Eire was the only direction I could expand, in fall I moved to Alm trusting in Mississaug's support (since he could expand wherever he liked, he didn't need to eat into my dish). But he moved in instead, with Iroquois support. So buddy, you took Alm and now I can't expand anywhere: what am I supposed to do? waiting calm here that one day you'll stab me?
In gunboats, a useless ally is an enemy. So I attacked my new enemy. I knew I was weaker than Missisauga, but I saw nothing else to do than to attack & hope in some luck.
No Luck. The only one who helped me was Algonquin, but he was already too weak. Iroquois and Ottawa just defended their corners, looking content with their possible draw result. Even Eire, who could take advantage from that new war, did nothing to move East and try the solo. He looked hurry to take what he could never have missed, on the West side of the board.
I was weaker, I was (basically) alone, I lost. Hurrah! :)

My only consolation is that I scored a new record. Huron has always been eliminated in previous 5 Indians gunboats (not that in press games it did much better).
The one who lived the longest was L4P1D4 in gameID=7921, in which he was eliminated in Fall 1512. So, me being eliminated in 1513 is the new longevity record for Hurons in gunboats! LOL !! :-)))

B-RICH94 (1859 D)
01 Feb 13 UTC
@Huron - You're right, once you began attacking Mississagua, I did nothing to try to expand in that direction. I felt it would have been very impractical for me at that time. I was glad for the relief that I had gotten from you two fighting, and at that time I had no desire to join in when Otawatami was looking pretty weak. In addition, moving east by land was a bottleneck, Iroquois was blocking the south waters, and by the time I got a fleet into the northern waters, I had no reason to get involved, because it would have just been hurting you and helping Mississagua. I even tried a few futile attempts to support you, but by that point your survival was a lost cause.

Guaroz, what year was I (as Huron) defeated in CG-I?
butterhead (1272 D)
01 Feb 13 UTC
@Gauroz- I wasn't "content with my draw situation". I had only one expansion option after being practically stalemated by Eire and Ottawa. that option was to attack Missisagua, which would have been idiotic since I already was at war with Eire and Ottawa and the 3 would have jumped me and I would have been knocked out. I wanted to push. I thought about pushing. but I couldn't afford to push anywhere. had Eire made an attempt to go for Solo, I was moving units into position to try to make an attempt on him.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
02 Feb 13 UTC
@ DC. It was 1511, gameID=9039.
@ butter. Yeah, not that I hoped it so much... I would have probably done the same. But whether it was "idiotic" is questionable, I think. I'm sure that several players would have tried it thinking "If I want to win, I must attack Missisauga now or never!"

Oh!
I started bad, another misordered start...
So, I only got 2 builds in the first year...

me and Ojibwe were stalemated for quite a while.
Then he breaks through, but then Erie hits him from behind, so i fight back with a huge offense in the hopes of gettign a draw.. it worked.

Game of Thrones themed map?
I know we're doing a Lord of the Rings variant(I'm in a game on the lab vdip site) but how about a Game of Thrones map? That'd be pretty slick, could even make it into two different variants, one with only Westeros which would be more like Classic variant and one with the lands beyond the narrow sea which would be more like modern dip 2 or even imperial dip 2

Which era most deserves a variant that doesn't yet have one here?
Self-explanatory title. Personally, I think a "Colonization of North America" map might be interesting, with colonial England, France, Spain, Portugal, along with Native American empires and powers, like the Aztecs, Incans, Narragansetts, Pequots, &c. So far as I know, there's nothing like that up yet. What else would you like to see? Maybe we'll get some good ideas.
