Enlightenment & Succession variant.

In the game at http://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=12197, France has managed to build in Eire, even though this is not listed as a 'build anywhere' variant. Confusing if not plain wrong. Help please; this spoils an otherwise good variant.

Blind Dip 0.2, DO NOT REPLY, pm interest instead
I'd be willing to GM a 'blind diplomacy' game similar to one that flopped due to CD about 6 months back.

PM me with your interest (to keep the game anonymous) and I will accept the first 7 players with RR > 90%. Rules forthcoming...

China, land of confused children......discuss
So a friend of mine is having a birthday on Tuesday. On Sunday, it will be Chinese New Year. What must life be like for Chinese kids with birthdays over the last few weeks? I must admit my suspicion of any calender that yields a number of birthdays per year via a random stochastic process.

Obviously, the long term mean is one, but for a subset, zero and two receive positive weights.
Gobbledydook (1083 D)

I have no idea how that would confuse children.
What about people in the West born on Christmas, or New Year, or Easter, or whatever festival you would like? I haven't heard any confusion regarding birthdays on those dates.

I don't think I understand what you mean gopher...
I don't see any issue...
How would Chinese kids' life look any different because they had birthdays the last few weeks?

Years exist in which they have one birthday. Years exist in which they have no birthdays. Years exist in which they have two birthdays. Think back to your childhood. Do you not think in terms of the year you turned 5? What about the year you did not turn 7 or the year that you turned 5 and 6? See it just makes my head hurt. I mean this is not the Rossini or Tony Robbins scenario.....The Pirates of Penzance explains that to children, so sometime you have a birthday and sometimes you don't, but sometimes you have two birthdays seems a bridge too far.

I had a friend who was born on February 29th...that's one birthday every four years.

A person who truly follows a lunar calendar sees their birthday in terms of that calendar, which is a very small group of people these days. For most Chinese, Chinese New Year's is just an extra festival day without any real "New Year's" significance.
I'm a Chinese so I may be able to shed some light on this topic.

The significance of Chinese New Year will be greater to those Chinese who are aligned to traditional Chinese folklore and beliefs, etc. since some rituals/ceremonies in CNY involve worshipping those Chinese gods.

But specifically, the "new year" significance is still quite strong because the Lunar calendar is still respected, and the activities during CNY are to do with closing the previous year and preparing for the beginning of a new year, etc.

For children born in CNY (or nearby), I think some Chinese will deem them as fortunate ones and assume they will live better lives, since Chinese believe that the first month of the Lunar Calendar is filled with a positive aura (as opposed to the Lunar July - the month of "Chinese Halloween" which has a negative/evil aura).

In practical sense, those kids receive more gifts and red packets, of course. Lol.

Rossini and Tony Robbins are the most famous Leap Day Births. It is also a major plot point of The Pirates of Penzance.

I'll grant you Pirates of Penzance (although I doubt many youngsters see that these days), which I should have known, but I don't find the date of birth being at all a notable part of Rossini's history and Tony Robbins is...not exactly a household name (and also doesn't seem to put a lot of weight on his birthday, from what I saw).

"Think back to your childhood. Do you not think in terms of the year you turned 5? What about the year you did not turn 7 or the year that you turned 5 and 6?" '

No, not really. Problem solved :)

Hi I'm working on a new variant for WWII, please let me know how the map is. Also I don't have any idea of php so please can you tell me how to 'run' diplomacy to test it out? Or can I just submit it to the mods?

Australia, land of pussies.....discuss
Australia has now implemented a national policy barring children in public schools from having candles as part of birthday celebrations because of the germ spreading associated with blowing out said candles. Beyond the fascistic nanny state aspect of a Federal Government taking an interest in such matters at all, can any right thinking person take seriously a country that would empower such authorities?

Game of Thrones themed map?
I know we're doing a Lord of the Rings variant(I'm in a game on the lab vdip site) but how about a Game of Thrones map? That'd be pretty slick, could even make it into two different variants, one with only Westeros which would be more like Classic variant and one with the lands beyond the narrow sea which would be more like modern dip 2 or even imperial dip 2

Which era most deserves a variant that doesn't yet have one here?
Self-explanatory title. Personally, I think a "Colonization of North America" map might be interesting, with colonial England, France, Spain, Portugal, along with Native American empires and powers, like the Aztecs, Incans, Narragansetts, Pequots, &c. So far as I know, there's nothing like that up yet. What else would you like to see? Maybe we'll get some good ideas.
