@Captain: The intent of the lists is the produce seven players that would play in a game against each other. So while I think it's appropriate to recognize players like Wolfman, it would be counterproductive to the effort if he's is not active on the site to be able to invite to the game. I think fasces falls in the same category. Hopefully both players will return to the community someday.

@tassa: There are numerous very talented players that have not been mentioned. My goal was to fill ONE game of seven players, and I asked people to nominate their top ten. I found it difficult to quantify my top ten, and could easily have substituted five or six players into it. That's the reason for asking for a diverse opinion. You've got one player, and as Raro notes, he's good. Have you got nine more?

although i could certainly round up 10 players i consider dangerous to varying degrees, having as of yet finished only 15 games, my sample size is fairly small and i would probaby have to include players, which - even though not to be underestimated - i doubt are the most dangerous guys around.

tassa, I beleive once you start playing more WW4, Chaos, Imperium, Gobble-earth, you will meet more people and perhaps see for yourself why people vote these people. Plus, have a look at some games, bozo, drano, Dr Rec, me, Ruffhaus won and judge for yourself. If you go to the HOF it will make it easier for research.

I think we are going to see mostly WWIV and other large variant players in this match, as players in large games tend to be noticed by more people (as there are more people in the game to notice them, plus people get quite impressed if you communicate with them while being on the other side of the board in a WWIV game). That said, the lineup is still going to be excellent, looking at the votes atm.

i am not going to list people, just because they were successfull in games i have not been in. Also by looking at such games i only see their military prowess, and dont experience the way they do diplomacy. In my eyes a top player needs 3 qualities:
- being a capable general that not only measures his success in the count of his centers (at least not in the short run :) )
- the ability to make others do what you want them to do, be it by successfully arguing for one's position, creating loyalty, manipulation or outright enslavement, while at the same time not easily becoming victim to the two latter points himself
- the ability to be ruthless without antagonizing the whole table (or in other words, making others understand what you are doing and not making them just see you as an a##hole :) )

...in a nutshell.

My inner alarm-bells often cry out pretty loud when i meet such players. But i think i can't list 10 of those, who i feel (from my own experience with them) are top-notch in all those categories.

I think the point about seeing mostly large variant players is right on. Nonetheless, this is a pretty cool concept.

I've played on this site on and off since its inception and have seen many players come and go. I realized after this post how a handful of the players on the list are people that I've played with many years ago, so that was kind of cool. I'm not a high volume players like some, so please take this list with a grain of salt.

@ tassa, you have a lot to say, but if you could stay on topic, it would help. Your opinion is valued, but we're looking for a list of players, not a dossier on each one.

He did. I simply asked him to list his ten rather than trying to keep a running tally. It's easy enough to capture the lists and total the votes on a spread sheet, and then the voting isn't clouded with previous results/numbers of prior voters.

So this is the equivalent of fans voting for an all-star game with the added benefit of the participants having their egos stroked in the process?

As usual, I'm late to the party :)

Great idea, and very difficult to choose, especially rounding out the last few spots. I'm sure my difficulty mirrors that of most players who are producing a list - there are some great players that I just haven't played with much, or interacted with in larger games. My list had couple of very tough omissions, and is weighted towards more recent memory. I feel surprised and honored to have so many votes myself. Thanks to those that have me on their list. I'm sure I'm on a few shit lists as well :)
