Question about HoF
Early this evening I played a game of Dutch Revolt with a few others and we drew before anyone was eliminated. My HoF rating went up 2, but if you click the gameID on my HoF page, it says no ones rating changed. Is there something wrong with the page, or should my rating have not changed? (I'm now #16 for reference)

Feature suggestion
I wonder what folks think about, or if it's even possible, to put in a private group chat option? In short, it would let you send an identical message to a group of nations that you'd like to keep secret from the others for the purposes of coordinating group assaults. I think it'd be especially useful for a cabal of smaller, shrinking powers to coordinate moves against a globally powerful threat.

What do you all think?

Game of thrones
Game of thrones board game is based on diplomacy game it seems. That could implicate that diplomacy variant made on Game of thrones stage could be very interesting playing experience. Who would not like to beet evil Lannisters with grey Starks little armies. One problem could be that in Game of thrones navies did not play important role, while in diplomacy navies are crucial for victory.

One could make it mostly land-based map.
Leif_Syverson (1626 D Mod)
05 Apr 13 UTC
There are significant seas in Game of Thrones, and both *historically* and (as I've only read the first book) *quite probably* in the future, ships are required to to move armies around the island and across the shallow sea (Dothraki much?) as well as from places like Dragonstone.

So fleets are totally within the realm of expected for a Game of Thrones map.

Alternatively, you could have it be entirely land based (unplayable sea territories for aesthetics) and have infantry/cavalry (cavalry being able to move 2 spaces instead of 1), much like the frigate/clippers in the Pirates variant.

Then draw the rivers and have no movement allowed across rivers except at places like the Twins.
im glad im not the only one who thought about that

The seas play a quite important role in GoT...in the east where Stannis attacks from his small kingdom, and in the west, from where the house grejoy raids the coasts...

If the only problem id the law, wouldn't it be enough to change the name of the map? If the map's name is for example "Fight for power" couldn't names like house of Lannister stay the same? Even if not you can alter it ver little to Jannister or something. Would be less epic, but do the trick, won't it? Just a thought, but I don't know anything about Copyright law. Obviously.

Other than that, for how much player would you suggest it to make? Just 3 (Lannister, Stark and Dragon or whatever the name) or more? I would suggest 8 or something like that, but with no specific reason.
Karroc (973 D)
06 Apr 13 UTC
For players, I would think (imho)
Stark
Lannister (would be in kings landing as well as their home territories, at the start)
Greyjoys
Martell
Baratheon
Tyrell
Tully

What about The White Walkers as players as well? Or the savages beyond the wall? This has some awesome potential..
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))
06 Apr 13 UTC
I think the territories behind the wall should be just not passable, like switzerland in classic, or at leat have neutral armies in them...
Karroc (973 D)
06 Apr 13 UTC
Yeah. Maybe also castle Fray (the castle with the bridge, that is a key strategic point) could have neutral armies/a neutral army. I think beyond that wall and across the narrow sea should not really be part of the map, as they were never invaded or really valued ever, so the map might want to reflect that my making them impassible or what have ypou.

The few ways you could do this:
The 7 kingdoms:
Stormlands, Reach, Westerlands, North, Vale, Iron Islands, Dorne.

The 9 great houses:
Stark, Lannister, Greyjoys, Baratheon, Tyrell, Tully, Martel, Targaryen, Arryn

Clash of Kings (Set midway though the second book, right after Renlys death):
The North, The Iron Islands, The Lion, The Flaming Stag

The above 3 maps are strictly Westerors, The following 2 also contain Essos, and contain spoilers from the other books.

A Feast For Crows (Set at the end of the 3rd book, contains spoilers)
The Iron Islands (Pyke, Great Wyk, Deepwood Motte would be their scs)
The Lion (Dreadfort, Casterly Rock, Lannisport, Kingslanding and the Twins) 5 scs, but rather spread out and enemies on all sides.
The Flaming Stag (Castle Black, Dragon Stone, Storms End and White Harbour)
House Martell (Sunspear and Yronwood) Only 2 scs to represent that its a smaller power.
House Tyrell (Highgarden, Oldtown, Ashford and Bitterbridge)
The Targaryens (They would have Pentos, Mereen and Astapor)
The Slavers (Volantis Yunkai and Mantarys) they represent alliance of slave states at war with Meree. Doesn't include Qarth because Qarth would be off the map.
The Dothraki (Vaes Dothrak, South Dothraki Sea, West Dothraki Sea would be scs)

The Free Cities (with exception to Pentos and Volantis) would be scs occupied with neutral armies.

Dance with Dragons (Varies between the middle of the 5th book and teh start of the 6th with some balance adjustments and assumptions):
Flaming Stag (Controls the North)
Iron Islands (Controls the Iron Islands and The Reach)
The Targaryens (Controls Dorne and Essos)
The Iron Throne (Controls the rest of Westeros)
The White Walkers (Controls everything North of the Wall.

Its a shame we cant play this variant here because of some illogical authors law. Well if I ever create some masterpiece like Game of thrones I will make it available for the site like this one :)

All you need is permission from the company that owns it, which they're likely to give if it's not used for making money (which would be the case here). I had to go through the process of contacting Bethesda for my Morrowind variant - I never got round to finishing the variant, but I did get permission from Bethesda.
If someone would be bothered to go and contact whoever owns Game of Thrones I imagine they would also give permission.
kaner406 (2061 D Mod (B))

I wonder if that would be G. Martin, HBO or the publisher of the books?
Vargh (1159 D (B))
08 Apr 13 UTC
@Captainmeme: You tried a Morrowing variant?!? Loved the game, love the idea!!

@kaner: I guess HBI has just the rights for the TV and its distribution, G. Martin owns more or less most of it (if he didn't sell them), but getting into direct contact might be nearly impossible, so the publisher seems like the best shot.

I must agree, book is always better than the video, but still the series are great thought. I really hope that Captainmeme will get positive response, so that soon enough we can play with the Iron throne here.

P.S. Something tells me that gopher would make great Lannister general (banks, gold and stuff) ;)

I actually drawn a map of Game of Thrones War of Five Kings before Robb Stark marched south.
So it has
The North (Moat Cailan, White Harbor, Winterfell)
The Iron Islands, (Great Wyk, Pyke, Harlaw)
The Lion (Lannisport, Casterly Rock, King's Landing, Golden Tooth)
Stannis (Dragonstone, Massey's Hook, Claw Isle)
Renly (Highgarden, Oldtown, Storm's End)
Dorne (Sunspear, Yronwood, Planky Town)

The Wall and Beyond the Wall are impassable and are not in play. This had the best 7 man diplomacy which I prefer when designing. It was set in a good fluid time and a time people are most familiar with. There was; Renly and Stannis parleyed, Theon to the Iron Islands, and Cat to Renly. There were a few things that bothered me. The North and the Iron Islands allied in every 3 games and would be a menace to Westeros and Dorne comes in too early for proper canon.

I had three test games but, I don't have plans to put on vdip given copyrights and all that.
To clarify, The Lannisters also had Harrahal. Robb had an army at the Twins (Neutral SC), Moat Cailan, and White Harbor with no army in Winterfell. I'll have to upload it to my page on the webdiplomacy forum one day.
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))
09 Apr 13 UTC
that'd be great :)
fasces349 (1007 D)

I would say make the Dreadfort not Moat Cailan the 3rd sc for the North. Make it the 2nd greatest castle north of the neck, rather then a castle ruin.
Agreed all, the books are much better, but the TV series I still pretty good.
airborne (970 D)
10 Apr 13 UTC
@fasces349 My first draft and first test game had that but the problem became that the North got bottlenecked at the Neck. Allowing the Greyjoys to sweep to victory while the North slogged through the Riverlands and the Vale.

Best,

I live in England, so calling an American company (I assume it's American?) would cost me quite a lot... Are there any americans here who would do so?

I will upgrade the codebase to the new V1.32 now
This might cause some trouble as nearly every file got changed...

Luckily all changes are just translation-related, so it's unlikely that we get a real problem.
I did some local tests on my server and it looks like everything is working fine, but you never know how if I missed some problems.
