So am I the only one wondering?
What are they going to do with Helmut Schmidt's hoard of cigarettes? Didn't he supposedly have a stash of menthol cigarettes sufficient to support his three packs a day habit through his 100th birthday?

Minor bug in Interactive Map
There is a bug with the Interactive Map Interface, that makes it difficult to enter a convoy order to a neighboring territory. I will try to fix it as soon as possible, but it might take some time, since I'm currently busy. If you use the Interactive Map Interface, please, double-check your convoy orders to neighboring provinces until the bug is fixed.

How is NoCD Calculated?
I've played 56 games, but it says I've gone into CD 7/10 times.

This is really killing my reliability rating, so I've no idea how to fix it.

1v1 - FER v. GAT
I have played most of the 1 v. 1 maps. Some are great and others are terribly lopsided. I was surprised when I realized that a variant with France, England and Russia on one team and Germany, Austria and Turkey did not exist. I was wondering if people thought that would be a good even map and what they thought should be done with Italy. Leave it empty? Fill it with neutral armies?

I thought if you CD'd out of a game you could get back in again if someone else didn't?
I thought that was how it was. I have a game I ended up getting CD'd out of since it was the first year and missed 1 phase. My net was out otherwise I would have got the move in.

But either way I'm confused.

what would you like to play
Spicy Hams?
It depends on the variant and settings...
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
17 Sep 15 UTC
Well, variant depends on the number of people.

Butterhead used to call his gang the "Spicy Hams". So many missing friends :o(

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8ir8rVl2Z4
More important are the settings. Only a few variants I won't play (like pure).

Not to get all pathetically schmaltzy, but I am only just now realizing that all of the people I found so interesting to interact with and play games against are not only gone from this site but have not so much as visited in 2, 3 and even 4 years. Many have been gone longer than they were here. FUBAR was created by sqrg who has not logged on in more than 2 years. Being one of the early players of The Dutch Revolt and helping iron out the kinks to make what I still think is one of the best variants on here was one of the things that attached me to this site. The other thing was playing games on here shortly after joining siting in the ICU waiting room during one of those moments of powerlessness as my mother went through a medical emergency that at the time seemed highly likely to end in death. The people I started the big thread with have all moved on. I reread tt612's goodbye message for the first time in a few years, and it really made me think of having fun playing against all of these people who aren't here any more. I mean I have always understood that one of the main reasons I have kept the big thread alive, even as I largely stopped playing games, is because all of these people that I used to share it with would naturally be drawn to it if they ever came back....and then I could play games with them again for old times' sake.

You are someone else....
I am still right here....
What have I become?...
My sweetest friend....
Everyone I know....
Goes away....
In the end....

Trent just hasn't been the same since he let them put him of Paxil.

Though, don't think I don't see what you did. You moved this to a different thread, so you would still be winning....
Yeah, I'd be up for a game or two, though it's been a while and a half since I've played.

Do we have enough "winners" for a round of Dutch Revolt? Wait for Classic critical mass?
(Always been more of a Johnny Cash fan myself, although I agree both version of that song are pretty great)

I'm ok with playing pretty much any variant

It's kind of funny....I have witnessed Sunday Morning Coming Down performed by the actual songwriter (Kris Kristofferson) who arranged and recorded the original version of the song. You can scarcely even listen to it because it is just so wrong. There are few people capable of so totally stealing a song as Johnny Cash.
the original:

the definitive version:

The same thing happening to Elvis freakin' Presley:
the original:

the definitive version:

the EuroDance version stripped of its gender specificity:

"Sunday morning" was eagerly shown to cash, one of kris' idols, who was just a kid sweeping the floors in the studio where Johnny cash was recording. Johnny cash encouraged kris to quit his job and continue songwriting, so it's not like it was stolen at all, more like a musical act of generosity and respect.

I appreciate your words gopher. I too miss some of the others that have moved on. I'd be interested in playing a nuther game with you, Dutch revolt is a great variant.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

I said "stolen" in the sense of taken possession of and away from its creator. As a child, I saw The Highwaymen perform and Kristofferson actually got booed for singing the song. When you get booed by your fans for singing your own song while on stage with Johnny Cash, is "stolen" really too harsh of a term?

I believe the way Kristofferson described the outcome was that the songwriting royalties after Cash made it a hit allowed him to no longer need a "real job" after 9 months of sweeping up Cash's studio. That story is a bit different from Cash's version which had Kristofferson already being successful as a songwriter and journeying a great distance to bring the song to him at a vacation home.

everyone left eh
Another great cover artists who does the song better than the original is Joe Cocker. His Beatles covers (especially With A Little Help From My Friends) and Elton John covers are better than the originals by far and these were songs that were already hits and found new life in Cocker.

Yes, "stolen" is too harsh a term. If you get booed for singing your own song while on stage with willie, Waylon, and Johnny cash, it only means you're singing to a bunch of low-life hicks that would do better pumping their paychecks into a jukebox, that's all. If I was kris I would've taken a dump on the stage and told them 'there's something to clap about!', shortly followed by 'I'm rich byitch!'

Yes, Cocker's got some great covers. However I don't think an artist ever does it with attitude of 'I can do it better', rather an acknowledgment of how great the song is and that it connects with them too. Let's face it, some people are great songwriters and some are great performers. A great recording relies on both (if only Neil young would take heed). Take a look at Townes van zandt, Danny o'keefe, and Leonard Cohen all covered by great performers who would only produce a solemn 'thank you'.

I'm not sure that Leonard Cohn gets booed for performing Hallelujah even if Buckley crawls out of the Mississippi.

Given where I am sitting, I have to point out the freakish ability of Prince to effortlessly churn out pop songs that instantly became major hits for the people he gave the songs to. I think he had the highest selling single three years in a row, each recorded by a different female performer.

In the spirit of Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues, I have spent much of the weekend watching the first season of Northern Exposure. So Twin Peaks and rural Washington State doesn't seem too distant a thread of association.
I never thought Cocker was doing it with an attitude of "I can do it better". I think it just happens to be that he *does* do it better.

Raro for Dutch Revolt?
I'm up for Ancient Med or Dutch revolt, I'm not a fan of not being able to kill Spain for ties but would be happy with either because I agree Dutch is a good variant. What about GOD though?

Not a huge fan of Ancient Med. GOD would put us at 6 and one away from Classic. EvW?
