yes gunboat has no chat. fullpress is when everybody can write with everybody in private chats (thats the normal setting). Public press is when there is only one chat used by everybody, the global chat. The private chats don't exist.

Gunboat has no chat so moves mean everything. There is less deception in it. Public Press is more difficult because you have to read between the lines knowing it's a party line and everyone can see it. So a lot of half truths come into play. Add in grey press where you don't know who actually wrote what and... well... you get the idea.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought that is what the other terms meant, but I have never played anything other than Full Press, so I could easily have been mistaken. It is clearly harder than full press, but the general consensus public press is harder than gunboat. I would have thought any communication would be better than none at all.

Not when the enemy can clear read you plans. But more to the point, grey press is anonymous press so you can't be sure it is from the person it claims to be.

So, assuming we don't go with Truth's plan, would we simply communicate in newspaper headlines?

I would think entire news stories like the spin doctors for the governments write.

And my idea was only to allow it to be a rated game and be inclusive with everyone to date. As long as it is unrated, I'm still good with public grey press only.

But if you think about it. Do you really think France and Russia only communicated via newspaper stories? The stories were propaganda for the people and disinformation for the enemy, not for communicating with their allies.

YCHTT - there's a lot of truth in what you suggest (love that irony), however, having private coms starts stepping the game up a bit past fun and gets more competitive which isn't exactly what I'd envisaged.

I agree. I wasn't so much interested in realism but novelty.

Looking to get back into dip again after a long hiatus. This sounds like fun, if there are still spots available, I'd like to participate.

Then keep it unrated and purely public grey press in the news story (radio or papers) style. It'll be fun.

Sounds like a novel ideal, even if I don't fully understand the concept. It'll be a great learning experience either way. Count me in!

There is your seventh. Now you just have to decide if you want a rated games for points played with an unreliable player or an unrated one played with an extremely reliable player.

What you should realize is that by being unreliable, GOD artificially boosts his rating. If someone takes over his CD, then he doesn't take the bit ro his VRating, choosing to sacrifice e his RR instead.

I'd be alright with either, but I'd prefer the unrated game personally.

My vote is for unrated.

I'm a pretty casual player, so I like unrated, but it really makes no difference to me.

As the game is intended to be primarily for entertainment purposes I'm fine with unrated too.

So full news stories, not just headlines? I only ask because writing styles are much harder to disguise. Eventually you will know who posted what, or at least what things were posted by the same people...

How about:
- Headline
- Newspaper's name (real or fictitious), you can include a reporter's name if you want, but not necessary
- At least one paragraph (like a 2 inch column in print papers, more if you want

We should consider publishing the best press release and the biggest screw up on this thread when the game is done. Maybe having a vote for both. I've already read several I would nominate as potential candidates for best press release, at least until something else comes along. I can only hope that I will be up to the challenge as the bar has been set pretty high.

I am loving the global dialogue in this game. Looking like this could be one of the most entertaining games of Dip ever!
