yes yes, I get you are taking the piss.

The funny thing is that I lived in Norway waaaaay back in 1998 and still get the gist of what they are talking about.
But do you know what 4 languages I used? I would have added a fifth but my Tengwar is not all that solid.

With all the sudden foreign language discussions in the forum, would anyone be up for a fun unrated Google Translate game?

I still like the idea of an in character ethnic stereotypes game in which press has to be put through Google Translate into the appropriate language and then back again to make everything slightly stilted.
So GOD knows the inscription on the One Ring. Does he know what each word means? Ash means one, nazg means ring (hence nazgul is ringwraiths). -atul means them the -uk suffixes adds all to them. From there you should be able to figure the rest out if you know the line.

Ambassador and gopher, both sound interesting to me.

I don't mind the sound of that gopher. Could be a lot of fun. So you in with me and YCHTT?

I guess.

Oh goodie, a translation game, count me in!
Welcome aboard kaner.

So we're looking at four players so far. I'd like us to get to at least seven for a classic board, or 10 using a modern board or to add a slight Asian feel with Colonial 1885 (also 10 players).

Based on gopher's suggestion:
- Players will get a randomly selected country to play. Off the site they should draft their response in English based around a stereotyped ethnicity of the country they're playing. Feel free to make it as entertaining as you like. Think of it as a quasi-extreme personalities meets Google Translate variant.
- then go to Google Translate and convert your English stereotyped message into the language of your country. Then take that version and translate it back again to English. If we have any players who's primary language is not English, feel free to use your home language initially, translated to your country's language and then translated to English. eg a German person who drew Turkey would put together their message in German, Google translate to Turkish, then Google translate to English.
- I'd suggest we see how the translations go. If it's all a bit dull we may mix it up a bit and add another translation or two to make it more confusing and entertaining.

Who else is up for it?
If you draw England, try to be original and use Gaelic, Welsh, or Irish.

Surely that would only apply if they were playing Britain, not England...
Caerus (1470 D)

I would play
Semantics, mouse. Technically, you don't play as England. You play as the United Kingdom. But the Queen of England is still the queen over the Welsh people and the Prince of Wales is Prince Charles, the Queen's son. Yet go driving around Wales and you will see plenty of signs even today with Welsh written on them.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

Britain just has to affect British diction. No modern or Colonial. I don;t know the difference between Egyptian and Turkish ethnic stereotype nor between Russian and Ukrainian.
YCHTT/mouse - there's no reason why you still couldn't play as a pompish/cockney/whatever Englishman but translate English to Gaelic/Welsh/Irish and then back to English. That's a good solution to a problem I missed!

Caerus - welcome aboard, that's 5.

gopher - I agree that the argument you make re: Modern makes sense, but can't see how it applies to Colonial 1885 as it has the usual 7 classic players, Japan and China (which are pretty unique). I guess the only player that might be a little harder to play would be the Dutch. That said, I can't see them being any harder to play in stereotype to Austria.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

My Dutch stereotype would be something approaching Goldmember.
That works. Or a heavy dope smoking, brothel visiting cyclist.
As the title of this thread started off as a lark and has now progressed onto a possible game, would you guys be happy with me moving it into a new thread?

Can someone explain the what I am missing about inactivity?
Vision ORCUTT 7x7 2014 ~
Due to inactivity the game was abandoned and removed. Better luck next time!
One player missed the first build phase, it gave us another phase to find a new player. He signed in shortly after and entered his build order. Then the game had us all on Ready or Save status. When the next deadline rolled around, it canceled the game. Is it supposed to work this way?

Country switch
Hi all,

because I'm leaving at the start of July and probably won't have many possibilities to connect on vdip, I'm offering a game to anyone I play. This game surely won't end in June, so any interested player is supposed to write me PM, I'll give it to the first one through country switch. It is this game: gameID=25970, I'm England.

Different Diplomacy Sites
I have an account on WebDiplomacy and (of course) VDiplomacy, but I've heard about yet another Diplomacy site when one player commented on how he missed his phase because he "forgot about VDip" because he's been on 'Playdiplomacy' so much. It is In fact a real site, so how many different Diplomacy sites ARE there? And how old/popular are they?

Convoys
This is my first time using vDiplomacy so I apologize if this question is answered somewhere else. I am running a workplace game, both players that tried to convoy in 1901 failed (UK and Italy). It shows the X in the middle of the red line showing cut or failed, but no one was there to mess with it. Is there a special way they need to enter convoy orders?

back stabbing too soon?
So I've noticed an increasing amount of players become angered at me for backstabbing "way too soon in the game." It's not just the players being stabbed, but also the rest of the members of the game objecting to the stab. Here is a link to one Africa varient map that I stabbed South Africa early on....

Rule Variant, Supply Lines
I was thinking about the notion that all armies and fleets in the real world have to have some way to resupply. Without changing existing mechanics, would it be possible to introduce a rule that an army in the field has to be able to connect to a supply center in order to be alive.
