Please take over open positions
A player has left the site and 23 games in a fit of rage. Please consider taking up the positions to save the games. Time has been added to ensure a smooth takeover.

I've never seen 18 open positions in the entire time I've been on this site...I can certainly take over some, although I won't say which for obvious reasons. Crazy...
JohnyD (2012 D)

I took a couple as well. Most of the left are dead games with 0-2 centers left, unfortunately.

Taking over a power with 0 centers and 1 unit in Autumn retreats is the ultimate challenge I suppose :-)

A challenge I'm up for! I think all of the games I joined have ~<4 SCs as well.

I was wondering why this model fella disappeared from a few games. But damn 23 of them in total! And all over some random debate in the forums lol.
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))
22 May 23 UTC
Lol someone even took up the 0 SC 1 unit challenge.
MiraiNikkiSan (1852 D)
22 May 23 UTC
Oh yeah I think that was me lol, actually happens rather often, or more often than I would’ve otherwise figured. Usually I think it’s someone who thinks that dropping out of a game right before death is a good way to not lose rating, even though it isn’t…. (hopefully not too much of a breach of anonymity in this case as there’s no way I’d survive unless everyone draws immediately for some reason)

Good gravy I can't even understand the back and forth in the Eurovision thread that made Model quit.
well it seems that everyone has taken all the open positions. dang it, why do the important matters occur right smack at midnight for me!
can someone give me the full context? I got intimated by the sheer strength of his wall of texts in the... *checks notes* forum about the Eurovision...
Yeah I'm also confused at what the argument was about.

I'm honestly ashamed at how hard I tried to understand what was being said. I didn't get very far. Most of his sentences weren't actually sentences.

Apparently, he is from Croatia, so English is likely his third or fourth language.

Glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t understand his point. I did actually read the whole thing but it seemed like just a collection of misattributed (which I didn’t even catch) quotes that didn’t have much to do with anything.

It appears that Hitler was a Muslim or at least very close to being one. The fact that I didn’t know this is yet another proof of the lacking state of my homecountrys education.
JohnyD (2012 D)
24 May 23 UTC
@GOD That was an interesting mention. I quickly looked it up, because I remember him rewriting the Bible into a Nazi version, so it seemed strange that he was close to being Muslim.
.... SO... it's not that he was going to convert. He was mostly sad he has to deal with Christianity's whole idea of forgiveness in comparison with the practical attitude of the Islamic countries at the time. From the WSJ, who are quoting "ATATÜRK IN THE NAZI IMAGINATION":
"‘It’s been our misfortune to have the wrong religion,” Hitler complained to his pet architect Albert Speer. “Why did it have to be Christianity, with its meekness and flabbiness?” Islam was a Männerreligion—a “religion of men”—and hygienic too. The “soldiers of Islam” received a warrior’s heaven, “a real earthly paradise” with “houris” and “wine flowing.” This, Hitler argued, was much more suited to the “Germanic temperament” than the “Jewish filth and priestly twaddle” of Christianity."
A very interesting piece of Trivia, that I did not know. It's fun to learn.

Yea but apart from that the Nazis weren’t really into religion, I was attempting to be ironic

As with nearly everything in life, such things are a bit more complicated. Himmler's occult-ism was real and Rosenberg's The Myth of the Twentieth Century existed.

As always, Heine's words ring out to us across almost two centuries:

Christianity—and this is its fairest merit—subdued to a certain extent the brutal warrior ardor of the Germans, but it could not entirely quench it; and when the cross, that restraining talisman, falls to pieces, then will break forth again the ferocity of the old combatants the frantic Berserker rage whereof Northern poets have said and sung so much.

The talisman has become rotten, and the day will come when it will pitifully crumble to dust. The old stone gods will then arise from the forgotten ruins and wipe from their eyes the dust of centuries, and Thor with his giant hammer will arise again, and he will shatter the Gothic cathedrals…When you hear the trampling of feet and the clashing of arms, your neighbors’ children, you French, be on your guard, and see that you mingle not in the fray going on among us at home in Germany. It might fare ill with you. See that you take no hand in kindling the fire; see that you attempt not to extinguish it. You might easily burn your fingers in the flame. Smile not at my counsel, at the counsel of a dreamer, who warns you against Kantians, Fichteans, philosophers of nature. Smile not at the fantasy of one who foresees in the region of reality the same outburst of revolution that has taken place in the region of intellect. The thought precedes the deed as the lightning the thunder. German thunder is of true German character: it is not very nimble, but rumbles along somewhat slowly. But come it will, and when you hear a crashing such as never before has been heard in the world’s history, then know that at last the German thunderbolt has fallen. At this commotion the eagles will drop dead from the skies and the lions in the farthest wastes of Africa will bite their tails and creep into their royal lairs. There will be played in Germany a drama compared to which the French Revolution will seem but an innocent idyll.

God help me, a positive word about Fox News
The Wall Street Journal published an article over the weekend that mentioned in passing the fact that Epstein changed his will shortly before dying to list Bill Gates's personal "Science Advisor" (presumably Myhrvold's replacement) as the executor of his will. This was news to me, and Google indicates that Fox News was the only major American media organization to cover this fact in 2019.

Any European Basketball Fans?
The NY Post lists Victor Wembanyama at 7'5" and only 210 pounds. He clearly seemed to want to go to San Antonio, which might be a sign of maturity and intelligence while now seeming a metaphysical certainty. Superficially, he looks to have a VERY narrow frame from shoulders through the hips. I do not associate my gut reaction to the look of him with physical durability or long careers.

Caspian Sea in Modern variant
Question about the Modern variant: can a fleet on the north coast of Iran move into the Caspian Sea? The original variant description states that the Rostov canal is the *only* way to get a fleet into the Caspian Sea. But I find it rather odd that a fleet on the Iran north coast would not be allowed to go there (I have confirmed that building a fleet there is possible, that is not my question).

Etiquette of readying your moves
I’ve notice that a lot of people stop readying their moves—even retreats—when the game isn’t going their way any more. Is there a strategic explanation for this or is just to pout?

Airplane units
Several years ago, I played a Dip game that I could not fully recall. Not the people I played with, the power I played as, or the exact changes to the rules. All I could remember is that the map played on involved countries all over the globe; that, alongside armies and fleets, it featured aerial units (and even nukes)
