the most insane team game EVER!
so I was recently thinking, I'd like to see a new team game start, but just a normal team game is starting to lose its appeal... so how do we fix this? well, here is how...

Honestly, no clue not to make a sob story or anything but, I'm adopted. As far as I'm aware of a Scottish man had sex with a young underage Korean woman (Even to this day, I still can't stand people congratutating teen pregrancy.) My place of origins is Sotuh Korea, my home and my identity firmly lays with the good ol' US of A.
I would say "My name's (Real name)" if i had to identify myself with three words ;)

@LoveDove----Haven't you heard of the fearsome MacKims?

@airborne----I'm surprised that a Korean adoption would have such information. Would they know if your father was Catalan rather than Spanish? The Koreans are particularly nasty (or were in the past) towards mixed children. It would not surprise me, depending on your age, for a mature unmarried Korean woman to have given up a half white child. I presume that you are basing your statements on knowledge, but still. All that being said, all of the people I've know who have identified themselves as something-Korean have been adopted and adding "their parents' " stuff on. My gym partner is "polish"-Korean complete with 13 letter last name, but is korean-Korean.

I was born in 1993. The information that I have is a few papers of adoption records, a small picture of bio mother and her father, and a birth paper. It was a closed adoption so, the answer for now is no. Maybe, I could care to go digging for that info but, I can say cheerfully that I hope my bio father is burning in hell.

Being an adoptive parent, I don't care for the quotation marks around "their parents' " in your post, gopher. In every way that matters, I'm far more of my son's parent than the people who contributed genetic material.
SacredDigits (978 D)

Also, you failed at reading comprehension. Airborne referred to his biological father as Scottish, so a Catalan/Spanish differentiation is...not really relevant.

Spain is a state and Catalonia is not. The Great Britain is a state and Scotland is not. Catalans speak their own language with a fairly high probability. The Scottish do not. Catalan is a more meaningful category than Scottish. And either way, I would not expect a government agency in East Asia to know how to split the hairs.

In the end, one must make a distinction between cultural parenthood and genetic. Your preferences being whatever you say that they are, quotation marks seemed a reasonable and low cost way of communicating meaning.

Usually when one places quotation marks around an item they are questioning the authenticity of it. For instance, if I say I disagree with your "research" it means something quite different from I disagree with your research.

Use of the word "adoptive" seems a lot less judgmental.
SacredDigits (978 D)
05 Jan 12 UTC
And yes, I used the quotation marks on purpose after saying why I was against them. I have no malice or bad feelings, but I don't think it's a very considerate way to phrase it (which I don't think was intentional in any way).

Those are your issues and I feel little need to be sensitive to your inferences. You are the one talking, not me.
SacredDigits (978 D)
05 Jan 12 UTC
Well, then, why is it that the adoptive parents the ones that get the quotation marks? If the goal is simple differentiation, would it not be easier to use a term that was unambiguous rather than an arbitrary punctuation symbol?
SacredDigits (978 D)
05 Jan 12 UTC
But as to your Catalan question, which I admittedly misread, the answer is that the state gets as much information as the mother chooses to give them, much like in any other birth. If her knowledge is that the guy was Scottish, then that's the information they have to work with and what they list. Barring a paternity test, that's all anyone has to go on in any birth.

Because you had no idea whom I was referring to due to my lazy ambiguity? You obviously understood exactly what I was saying, so no, I see no merit to you argument. You have emotional issues due to your own sense of personal identity. Your issues are not my responsibility.

In all cases.

And you're an asshole. All you needed to do was agree that no offense was intended. It's quite clear that phrases stuck in quotation marks alongside the same phrase outside of quotation marks contextually gives the phrase in quotation marks less legitimacy.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
05 Jan 12 UTC
No, it simply sets aside one thing as being distinct from another. YOU gave it value. YOU recognizing that I was drawing a distinction imposed a value distinction onto my definitional distinction. These are your issues.

And no, it annoys me when people ask me to apologize for their issues and the values that they impose on neutral statements. It is aggressive (or perhaps passive-aggressive) and it is symptomatic of them looking to be offended. It is also a well defined method of argumentation and rhetoric, and by the way, it was a tactic advocated by the Communist International as a method of bullying others to shift discourse, when they trained Popular Front agents.

why don't you both just drop it huh? airborne made a simple statement that his father was Scottish, his mother Korean, and the two of you turned it into a huge argument/debate. I understand that Sacred was offended by it, and I understand why(a slight rewording would have made it seem a LOT less offensive), but I also see in a way, where gopher is coming from... but either way, obviously airborne doesn't want to talk about it anymore, but you 2 keep going on and on. he even changed his 3 words to end it... honestly, I think you both owe HIM an apology for turning his innocent thread into a battlefield for your disagreement! so why don't you both just DROP IT ALREADY!
