True, it was North Korea that started the Korean War, but that just means that it was not an example of US king making and means it is still not a good example of US king making going well.

It is worth noting that the Soviet Union was the first country to recognize Israel. Israel was fairly overtly anti-American until the Nixon administration. France was historically Israel's primary ally during the period in which Israel could have been destroyed. The Six Day War was fought with French tanks and airplanes much as the Suez War was. Israel and Egypt both moved towards the US at about the same time. Our antagonistic relationship with Nasser and then with the other quasi-fascist secular Arab states was primarily driven by our relationship with Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Saudi Arabia feared the anti-monarchist overtones of Nasserism and the Turks feared the Arab Nationalism. Iran wasn't too pleased either. Israel was largely an afterthought during Nasser's lifetime. Remember that Egyptian troops were in Yemen much of the time that US troops were in Viet Nam. Our taking Israel to the woodshed in '56 is probably the most important event in our relationship with every major European power since World War II.

I also take a little bit of an exception to the Dominican Republic being characterized as a failure. It is a very small country and a former Spanish colony. Each of those characteristics is a fairly negative coefficient in a cross country regression with dummy variables. It is about in the middle among countries in terms of living standards around China and Thailand. Central American countries can't say that other than Panama and Costa Rica. When you can spot a country's border from space because its neighbor is so much poorer, a country deserves a little respect.
