Hi all. In a game where 2 players have left and the remaining 3 players want to draw. Just checking that the left players (still on the board) don't get a share of the pot if the 3 of us draw. Or do we have to wait until we've taken all their SCs?

1 v 1 Challenge
I have recently played with someone 1 v 1 who believes that in an FvA scenario, and given that Austria plays properly, France has zero chance of winning.

I disagree in principle because there is rarely a single "best" move given a situation wherein someone is not completely lost. There are a set of likely moves that a person might make, and a set of counter moves to challenge that. It boils down to a matter of intuition of what you think your opponent might move. I am of the personal belief that a combination of psychology, statistics, game theory, and intuition can be used to predict move orders of other people (but that's a discussion for another day).

To prove my point, I am willing to play any 1 v1 game with any player, on any of the 1 v1 classic map (yes including playing Germany in a GvR). If there is a map in which, despite my best efforts, I am consistently unable to win, I will concede.

Who's up for it?
fasces349 (1007 D)

GvR, Frankland vs Juggernaut and EvT are unblanced maps.

while the other two does require some guess work to win, EvT does have a set of moves which makes it impossible for Turkey to win.

AvF and IvG are more or less balanced.

This is what we can read from the numbers gathered at Vdiplomacy.
The 1vs1 variants are ordered through the solos ratio, from the lowest to the highest:

1.03 , Duo, symmetrical variant
1.07 , Lepanto, symmetrical variant
1.18 , England over Turkey
1.34 , Confederacy over Union
1.39 , Austria over France
1.64 , FG over RT
1.77 , Germany over Italy
5.00 , Russia over Germany

here's the size of samples (game played):

327 Duo
83 Lepanto
751 E*vT
431 Emp1on1
962 FvA
512 FGvsRT
908 GvI
203 GvR

The situation about GvR is even worse.
Some time ago I had a look at the database of finished GvR games, looking at whether I could get some clue from past german victories (I had just started a game as Germany). I couldn't get any, because german victories were always(?) related to NMRs or some other "bizarre" russian behaviour.
In my opinion, the variant ought to be re-balanced in some way (for example, by preventing the movement of A War in the first year).

Apart from that, I thought EvT was resonably balanced.. but if fasces349 is right, perhaps something should be done.

Most of the problem in balances not being accurate is sample size and people not playing properly:

I think the only truly unbalanced map is Ger vs. Rus, only because Russia is too hard to invade in the north and also gets the southern building zone.

In all the others, a player is always capable of winning as either country. As Halt said, once you are at a certain level, it is never about simply choosing the "correct" moves, it is about countering and defeating your opponent. This may not be the case for Eng vs. Tur, but I always thought that one was pointless anyway because you don't even fight your opponent, you simply race to 18 sc's. It is more an exercise in mobility.

The advantages that some of the countries have only runs as deep as they are recognizable. For instance, where Germany out-strengthens Italy, Italy can easily outflank Germany with good mobilization. While Austria has a stronger land-access to the Balkans and the west, France can mobilize the north as well as pin down Austria's naval output in the south. The imbalance of these maps only occurs when it is two average players playing without the foresight to grasp such tactical scenarios. This is not always the case, but often times it is, particularly with the imbalance of FvA, GvI, and FGvsRT which I believe are all well-balanced maps, (if you realize that each country must be played differently, and that you must recognize and counter your opponent's strategy).

I read a good player's quote on webdip the other day that struck me, it went something like this:
"If you know your enemy, and know yourself, you will never lose in 100 battles.
If you know yourself, but do not know your enemy, you will win 1 battle, and lose 1 battle
If you do not know yourself, nor do you know your enemy, then you'll never win."

I think this holds especially true for 1-on-1 games, validating the point that Halt was making.

I'll play as Russia against Germany then (I'm not a very good player however)
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)

In the France vs. Austria game, I'd throw a slight advantage to Austria, but it's still playable because of the multiple decisions taken at various points by both sides that can go either way. Several players in this community have specialized in these 1v1 games and know the various tricks and the tactical formulas that will succeed. Even so the FvA game can provide some challenge and fun.

The Italy vs. Germany game is not balanced at all. It's still fun to play, but Italy cannot win this game absent colossal failure by Germany. Citing statistics for past games ignores the fact that many Germany players have failed that badly. If I played Halt in 200 games of this variant, 100 as each nation. The score would be 100 to 100, with Germany winning all 200 games.

"This may not be the case for Eng vs. Tur, but I always thought that one was pointless anyway because you don't even fight your opponent, you simply race to 18 sc's. It is more an exercise in mobility. "
This, this is why Eng v Turkey is the most unbalanced of the 1v1s, because its an exercise in mobility, England has an advantage because he can get units into Germany before Turkey can.

@Ruffhaus: Devonian, the best 1v1 player on this site has a higher win rate as Italy then he does as Germany. And I don't mean he is playing against weak Germans, he has beaten players like Gauroz and Bozo as Italy. IvG is more balanced then you give credit for.
Raro (1449 D)
18 Jun 13 UTC
disagree with Ruffhaus.

On the G vs. I map, I think the advantage goes to Italy. I used to contend that a smart player could never lose as Italy, but I wouldn't go that far now. However, I'd take Italy in that variant any day of the week.

Halt (2077 D)
18 Jun 13 UTC
Agreed. Good game fasces! I think I shall look into the map more to see if there is a way for Turkey to solo in normal games. The move order you've shown me is interesting that I think I can work out the general idea behind it.
Synapse (814 D)

Wow I really don't think Germany stands any chance against Russia.

I personally think the English opening to Holland is stronger then the opening to Norway (which is what I did in game with you), but President Eden thinks Norway is the better move.

I trusted Edens judgement because he is the better 1v1 player, but I'd like to try again either with a Norway opening and a smarter southern strategy or a Holland opening to see how that goes.

I don't think there is any way in a game with two competent players that Turkey can solo. I'd be happy to play a few test games with you, were I play England and you play Turkey and we agree to draw the game before one of us solos so that you can safely test various tactics.

France and England working together against Turkey (No Stabbing!)
diatarn_iv (1458 D)
18 Jun 13 UTC
Synapse, I might join.. but what's the point? I think E+F should easily defeat T, if they work together.
Perhaps Turkey can reach a stalemate line before being wiped out.. but I wouldn't bet on that
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Jun 13 UTC
England it stronger then Turkey alone in a 1v1, so why would the addition of France make it harder?
SandgooseXXI (1294 D)
18 Jun 13 UTC
There's no way I can win, but hey, I need to play more games anyways.

I'll be stopped before even reaching boh or munich, there's no way.
E+F v T would be horrific. France and Turkey would run into each other around Vienna and Budapest, and Turkey would have to cede Russia to England to do even that.

EvFvT sounds horrific too.

And recently I've been favoring convoying to Holland, but I also have played England twice if that since my most recent return. Norway is probably still better simply because it keeps you from having to commit multiple fleets to the Atlantic in securing St. Petersburg.
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Jun 13 UTC
I favour Holland because then you have Germany guaranteed, and St Petes is guarenteed in the long run anyway.

fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Jun 13 UTC
That said in a real game I don't think it matters. England is favoured to win either way.

Just in a game where my opponent knows all my moves beforehand, I think the Holland opening would be slightly stronger.
gameID=14888

Let's see if this England can beat this Turkey while announcing his moves...
Never mind the comment, it'll be a normal game, I think.

Modern Diplomacy advise needed
I'm playing as Russia and was just betrayed by Ukraine. My forces are split between Scandinavia and Asia Minor/Middle East. Is my best move to move my forces in the Middle East back up to try to defend my center (which has one tank) or keep moving south into the Middle East against a weakened Turkey? I have 6 units in the area vs. 9 Ukraine, 5 Turkey and 4-5 potentially hostile Italian units.
