CDed units destroys
Could somebody answer -- are units of CDed countries destroyed totally randomly?
I used to think that according to rules first should be removed units which do not keep any sc's.

Just a quick query. Would there be any way to choose to enlarge the text/message screen within games so that you could see more of a long message at one time .. rather than having to scroll down a few lines at a time?

Cold War!
Hello people of vdip! Safari and I are getting close to finishing up our 2 player variant: Cold War. It's on the lab right now, but as you know, as a two player map its very important we get the balance right. It'd be great if you guys would create some games and play them out for us. The more data we have the better. Much appreciated!

Quick Classic Game Needs You
Hey all -- I've always to try a game that ends in a certain number of turns (in this case, 7). "Winning player is decided by who has the most SCs after that turn's diplomacy phase." If you're up for playing a game with a ticking time bomb, please join.

Please, new request : new game not beginning before a specific date.
Please read below.
Retillion (2304 D (B))

Some of us would gladly join a new game that is about to begin but would not want that it starts before a specific date because they are too busy at the moment with their Real Life. Maybe they have some exams, or they have heavy demands from their work or families, or maybe they are already playing their maximum reasonable number of games at the moment, or anything else but they know that starting from a specific date they will be available.

So, would it be please possible, when a new game is created, to have an optional settings that says that the game will not begin before a specific date, even if all the necessary players have joined the game ? Even a precise hour could be selected.

For example, we could create, or join, a new game that says something like :
"This game will not begin before July 01 2014 at 13H00 (Central European Time)."

Thank you very much !

This should be easy to implement.
I'm no native English speaker, so how should I make the different visible in the game-tab?
At the moment it displays:
Start: 1 day, 1 hours (Tue 12 AM)
I might change this to

Start: 1 day, 1 hours (Tue 12 AM) - fixed
and
Start: 1 day, 1 hours (Tue 12 AM) - or if full

or are there any better ideas?

I think your solution works perfectly
Retillion (2304 D (B))

It would be great to have that new possiblity when creating games ! Thank you very much, Oli !

I did not intend to talk about that question but now that it is mentioned, I will do it : the way it displays now is TOTALLY INCORRECT !

Indeed, at the moment it displays :
Start: 1 day, 1 hours (Tue 12 AM)

To me, that should mean that that game will start in 1 day and in 1 hour on Tuesday at 12 AM (in this example).
BUT that's not at all the reality ! The reality is that that game :
a) Will start as soon as all the necessary players have joined the game.
b) That game will be cancelled in 1 day and in 1 hour on Tuesday at 12 AM if not enough players have joined the game !

When I first joined a game here, I was indeed very surprised to see the game beginning much before the time that had been given in the game description !
I even wonder if that is not one of the reasons why we see so many NMR's at the very beginning of so many WWIV games, for example. Indeed, if a player really thinks that the game will begin on *such day* at *such hour*, maybe he will simply not check the site before that moment even if the game begins !

So my suggestion is that :

- The current situation is renamed :
"Start : as soon as all the necessary players have joined the game or will be cancelled 1 day, 1 hours (Tue 12 AM)."

- The new game that will not start before a precise date is displayed :
"Start : as soon as all the necessary players have joined the game but not before July 01 (13H00) or will be cancelled in X days, Y hours (Tue 12 AM)."

By the way, that raises two other questions :

1° Why is it necesarry to have a limited time for players to join a new game ?

2° Isn't it possible to write those lengths without a final "s" when it is a singular ? For example :
- When the Phase is 24 hours, why is it that it is displayed "1 days /phase (normal)".
- Or when the Joining pre-game period length is x days and 1 hour, why is it that it is displayed "Start: 1 day, 1 hours (Tue 12 AM)" ?
Retillion (2304 D (B))
26 May 14 UTC
CORRECTION :

- The current situation is renamed :
"Start : as soon as all the necessary players have joined the game or will be cancelled in 1 day, 1 hour (Tue 12 AM)."

I think the long explanation is too long for the description-line in the game overview.
Better we use a key-word with a mouse-over explanation (or a link to the correct explanation).
kaug (1220 D)
26 May 14 UTC
the solution you proposed is perfectly understandable. Fixed when it will start at that date no matter what and the 'or when full' for games that begin as soon as they are filled.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

I will code this asap. This should be very easy if I do not add the ability to set a specific date and time for start, but use the more generic days-selection we already have and just make a checkbox if you want to start when the game is full or if you want to wait till the starting-time even if it's already full.

Should work now. Please give it a try.
Retillion (2304 D (B))

I have just seen that it is possible to create a game that will wait for the given starting time and day before beginning !

Oli, thank you VERY MUCH ! Once more, you have done a FANTASTIC job !

Oli (977 D Mod (P))

Whow. Talk about getting used to some strange wording...
Start: 6 hours (02:10 AM) - or if full
is really totally wrong.

In fact it's more:
If full (fill-up time ends in 6 hours / 02:10 AM)

Can some native speaker give a better wording (and please not longer)?
rexgarum (1960 D)
29 May 14 UTC
How about

(normal)

Start: 6 hours or immediately when full

vs

(new option)

Start: 6 hours even if full

Oli (977 D Mod (P))
29 May 14 UTC
The problem is just for the normal.
It does not start in 6 hours or immediately when full.
It will be canceled in 6 hours if not full. It will always start immediately.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
29 May 14 UTC
I think we're tying to say two different things in one phrase. Splitting them could be a solution:

(normal)
Expires: 6 hours (02:10 AM). Starts: immediately when full

(new option)
Expires: 6 hours (02:10 AM). Starts: at expire time, if full.

I'm not motherlanguage and I'm not sure of the wording, but I believe that keeping distinct 'start' from 'expire' does help. Any game will be canceled when the joining period expires, unless it was filled up before that. The difference is only in 'when' it will start if it's full. JM2c.

It's not a matter of language, it's a matter of necessity. The need for this feature is nebulous. Why are you people putting Oliver to task with such nonsense?

Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))

The code was already there, I think. Live games already had this implemented. It was just a case of extending the option to other games.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

Exactly...
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)
29 May 14 UTC
It's still nonsense, as evidenced by the fact that no one has really been able to describe exactly how it should be worded. Why spend even two hours on this? Why wouldn't you simply delay creation of the game until people are ready to play?
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
29 May 14 UTC

How comes you decide how I spend my (very limited) free time?
From a pure productivity standpoint playing here is nonsense, running the site even more (as it costs my money and my time).
Retillion provided a small mental challenge, I did a small check about the possibilities and time commitment needed and decided I'd like to take this challenge.
Mapu (2086 D (B))

I think your next coding challenge should be to build a personal forum/blog area for RUFFHAUS so he can rant, express his diplomacy opinions, share knowledge, etc. It could be called "Das Ruff Haus" and we could all go, read, and optionally participate.
SandgooseXXI (1294 D)

^ I actually like this idea. Ruffles tends to get worked up about the pesky things in life.
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)

Yeah it's those pesky things like integrity, quality, and efficiency...

I guess I thought that the forums were where people expressed ideas and opinions. Apparently it's only a place for patronizing and brown-nosing. I'd welcome a forum devoted to common sense, and real ideas for improvement of the community. I might even participate in it, if I believed that any idea I would suggest would not be immediately vetoed by the mad little tyrant behind the curtains.

Oli, who says that I decide how you spend your time? If you feel like you need to respond to every piece of nitwittery that people like Retillion spew out, that's your choice. I'm not criticizing you for what you choose to do with your limited time. I'm criticizing his request. This guy is so high maintenance, he makes Michelle Obama look like a street vagrant.

The fact remains that no one has provided any justification for why there is a need for this feature.

"this guy is so high maintenance, he makes Michelle Obama look like a street vagrant"
-lol

Glad to see nothing has changed since my last forum engagement... Ruffhaus continuing to beat his chest like a Roman Emperor at anyone and everything, no matter how trite.
The simple fact is, Ruffhaus, that Retillion made a simple suggestion to Oli for matter of his convenience, and Oli feels like accommodating him... big deal!
I know that you might find this abhorrent, especially since no one ever gives credence to anything you say, but why even argue something that was so easily resolved?
You poke fun at Oli for the time he is spending, yet you spend your time like a mad dog tied to railing that just barks and snarls at passers by. Yo best check yoself son!

This is not true, there have been a number of improvements made to this site in part because it has been Ruff that has raised and argued for these changes.

I'm not poking fun at Oli at all. I was attempting to defend him from trivial nonsense requests like the one at the top of this thread. Oliver has many times mentioned how busy he is, and the time he has available to devote to things at VDip is limited. I think it is only courteous to keep requests to important matters. For example there are variants we play on here with bugs in them that need troubleshooting to correct adjacency issues, convoys, coasts, etc., and it's a arduous task that he is not able to take on as often as he would like to. That's fair enough. No one's giving him hell over that. He said that he didn't mind helping on this occasion so that's fine. I'm not trying to schedule his days out. However, it is a valid point that there are real issues affecting game play here. And in my opinion if we have two hours of the site administrator's time that it's better spent fixing real problems. That is the simple fact, Raro.

Trapped! SRG
Hi all,

This SRG (Special Rules Game, although in this case it's a little more like a Special Rules Tournament (SRT) as there will be multiple games involved) is an idea I had a while ago, which is based on an old children's TV show here in the UK (called Trapped!). I've adapted it to work in a Diplomacy setting so I could try it out here.

Support Issue
On GobbleEarth, I am trying to move Honduras (North Coast) to Caribbean. When I order it supported by Cuba. When I look at the move preview, it does not show the yellow support line from Cuba attached to the red movement line from Honduras (North Coast). It has it attached to another gray line also going from Honduras to Caribbean.

Why is that?
