Haven!-2 EoG
Year 1
Ah, I got Trolls. Not too bad a power if you play them correctly, but I have seen them do fairly badly in the past. My plan is to ally the Rogues/Magicians (whichever was better with their diplomacy) against the other in Year 2, but from my experience it’s always best to go for neutrals first and try to get a triple build.
Talked to both the Magicians and Rogues, and I can’t make my mind up – the Magicians are very enthusiastic – something I value in a player – but the Rogues have a better writing style. I’m leaning toward the Magicians simply because the Rogues can’t retaliate as hard. However, I'll wait for next turn before deciding.
Meanwhile, I have the problem of where to get my third build from... Hobbits want Never Never Land and the only other centres around are Riku and Tarsis. Riku is probably the better one if I don’t want a load of angry Magicians at my door, so I'll go for that. I’m going to try to convince the Pirates to go to Thon Thalas with a promise to support him to Newa River – that means he won’t get any builds this turn. Plus I have a good alliance forming with the Gnomes, so hopefully I can enlist some help from him.
Year 2
I took Riku, which means the Pirates’ll be really annoyed at me, and they got a build due to the Hobbit’s NMR. The Magicians want my help against the Rogues and I can’t do that without overextending myself, but I can help the Rogues against the Magicians and that will give me some extra SCs to use against the Pirates, so I'll do that.
I’m starting to regret attacking the Mags now... The Leprechauns have offered me help against him, but I’ve been swayed by the Magician’s messages and I think I can turn this situation against the Pirates and the Rogues. I’m planning to convoy my army across to the Pirate lands and ask Rogues for a bounce in Pygmy, which I won’t do and should let the Mags into TSC. Hopefully this all goes well...
Year 3
Well, my bouncing idea didn’t work and now I’m in trouble – if I start a war with the Rogues I'll certainly lose Riku. I’m starting urgent negotiations with the Mags and Rogues to try to form a three-way... Let’s hope it works...
My negotiations seem to have worked and conflict on my eastern flank has ended, so now I can focus on the Pirates. Just in time, too – the Pirates would have taken Riku otherwise. Now that the Magicians and I are working together in the Pirate Lands, I think that we can make some progress on him.
Years 4-5
We’re making very slow progress against the Pirates, and it’s starting to put us behind... Ah well, at least we’re strongly allied to the Leprechauns (now emerging as a strong power) and I have entered negotiations with the Wizards and Barbarians. They all seem to be going well, but the Wizards won’t stab the Pirates. Also, I’m quite glad that the Rogues and Mags are still holding to the ceasefire – if I was brought into a war over there I'd lose my Pirate centres for certain.
Year 6
The Mags have stabbed the Rogues. I knew it couldn’t last... I’m going to stay out of the war and focus on the Pirates, though – that’s where my units are needed. I’m also worried about the Barbarian advance – the Gnomes have almost been completely defeated. I’m making arrangements with the Gnomes for bounces, and trying to pass it off to the Barbs as an error because of a lack of communication.
Year 7
The bounces seem to be working, and the Barbarians are buying the lack of communication story, I think. Meanwhile, we’re making some progress against the Pirates. Wizards are trying to convince me to fight the Leps but that’ll overextend me again, so I’m not going to. I’m trying to ignore the war between my allies – that’s the only thing that’s going wrong for me at the moment.
Year 8
I’ve convinced the Barbs to let me into Newa, and I can pass it off as an attempted bounce to the Gnomes, so that all went well. My relations with the Barbs and Leps are at a high, but the Wizards are starting to get annoyed at me – although it doesn’t look like they’ll be winning their war. Since the Pirates are nearly gone now, I can start to take an interest in the Rogue-Mag war, but I don’t want either of them to die, so I’m going to try to negotiate a ceasefire.
Year 9
Rogues agreed to the ceasefire, and so did the Mags, but only the Rogues kept it. I’m starting to get quite annoyed at the Mags now. As soon as I’m done with the Pirates I'll have to do something about them...
Meanwhile, I’m feeling confident about my alliance with the Barbs so I’ve demilitarized Newa, which frees up a unit.
Year 9 (fall)-10 (fall)
Had to get a sitter for this time, and since the Pirates are no threat anymore I’ve left instructions to attack the Mags. Although he misorders one convoy, he manages to convince the Mags that he’s not attacking them (amazing diplomacy) and takes a few SCs off them next phase. I’m quite happy with the position I’m in when I come back.
