Noob question
When are new units created? I've conquered 4 or 5 supply centres but still only have 3 units. The friend I'm playing against has 6. In depth explanation would be awesome. Thanks

The game will sometimes give the option of going somewhere by land or through a convoy. My question is, why would you ever want to go by convoy in these cases?

New WWIV font colours suck dog balls
I greatly appreciate the new WWIV map, but seriously some of those font colours for players are horrendous. While it may not be a perfect match with their colour on the board, its something that needs majorly fixing.

Extending the advanced options for game creation?
Hi,
what do you think about making some variant-specific features like BuildAnywhere, Pick your Countries or Fog of War a general option for every game?
(more informations in the thread)
tobi1 (1997 D Mod (S))
07 Nov 13 UTC
A few days ago I "translated" the "Classic - Pick your Countries" for diplomacy.s-website.de, a German diplomacy-site using the webdip-code. After I finished an idea came to my mind that it might be a nice feature to make some variant-specific options like the country-selection a general option for every variant (like the options for anonymous games or different in-game messaging). The available features could be even extended.

Here is a list of the options I have in mind:

1. Pick Countries: For every game, a user could select which countries should be played. Games like RomeVsCarthage on the AncMed-Map or a 10-player-game on the new WWIV-map would be possible. In addition to that the game creator can decide, that some countries get merged, so that games like FranklandVsJuggernaut would be possible on other maps as well.

2. BuildAnywhere: Build Anywhere as an optional feature for every variant.

3. GreyPress: Anonymous messages could be posted in every game in which this option is switched on.

4. CustomStart: The game starts with a build-phase.

5. FogOfWar: FoW for every variant. (This feature might be more difficult as there have to be a prepared map for FoW. But this should be available in the near future when Oli gets enough time to add the final version of the interactiveMap which needs such a map as well. (already made for around the half of the variants and will be completed))

6. Do you have more ideas?

All five options are at least partly implemented in some variants so the code is already available and theoretical it could be used for other variants as well. But if they should become a general option, there would still be some work to do. I'm sure all the listed options can be implemented (perhaps with some exceptions for some variants e.g. BuildAnywhere with Lepanto).
I know that the variant creators have something in mind when they decided to make a variant BuildAnywhere or not or with FoW or not etc. but it might be nice feature to change these settings even if the game might be less balanced with different settings.

So my question is: Would you like such a feature and would you use it? Or do you think implementing something like this would be wasted time?

I'm posting this over here and not in the developer forum as vDiplomacy has the most already implemented features compared to other webdip-sites I know and the developer forum is very slow at the moment and doesn't have that much players who would be potential users of such options. :)
I proposed the Fog of War option to Oli some time ago, but it seems that he got too much stuff on his plate so he doesn't have enough time with the coding and other technical stuff.

Perhaps if you know about coding, you can talk to Oli and see how you can help?

I try to stay as close as possible to the original webdip-code, so I can import changes from the webdip-code more easy here.
A FoW for example will really change a lot of code and make all variants here unaccessible for all sites running kestas code.

Also I'm really super-busy with RL.
Thankfully the mods take care of running the site so I can take care of the programming, but I can't do much coding at the moment at all. In the evening I'm to tired for programming and on the weekends I have 1 - 1,5 hours to do some programming (sunday morning before the family wakes up :-)
And in 1-2 hours a week it's impossible to do big changes.

(That's why your interactive maps are still not online)
tobi1 (1997 D Mod (S))

Ok. I really understand your point to stay as close as possible to the original code. Over there on diplomacy.s-website updating the code is nearly impossible as there were made simply too much changes in the past.
I would have tried to avoid too much changes to the original code but of course some changes cannot be avoided.

So if this and the fact, that you are very busy at the moment means that sth like my idea probably won't be installed over here, I have to reconsider if I will start my project (in the hope that it might be used on a different webdip-platform).

So still, it would be nice, if you can give me some feedback, what you think about my idea, vDip-users! :)

I just have to say, if that were implemented here, it would make the site 100% better because of all the new choices you can make when creating games.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))
07 Nov 13 UTC
As long as these changes do not change the code in a big way or do not mess with the existing variants everything is possible.
But a Custom start, or a build anywhere for example would require changes to every variant that has these changes hard-coded and might render these variant useless for all other webdip-sites (and there are quite a lot of webdip-sites that use our variants, but nor our code).

I would love that...especially the FoW option...Known World with FoW is an old dream of mine :))

Idea - How difficult would it be to give each user custom color options for their country? It could be altered just for the user's display while to everyone else, your country would remain the standard coloring.

I also strongly back the FoW option (but for WW4)
I know absolutely nothing about programming and coding but would like to ask something - Oli talked about how making substantial changes to our variants here may lead to other websites unable to use those variants, so are the variants across websites actually sync'ed?
tobi1 (1997 D Mod (S))
08 Nov 13 UTC
Well, they aren't directly synced. But if you would change the code of variants on this site so they would only work with some changed code on this site, then the new, changed versions of the variants won't work on other sites with the old webdip-code anymore. It would be much more difficult to use new vDip-Variants or to update existing vDip-Variants on other platforms if they hadn't the vDip-webdip-code as the variants wouldn't be compatible to other webdip-versions anymore.

And that's the difficulty. Theoretical, these options could be implemented but it's very difficult to do it in a way, the original code isn't changed too much, so official webdip-updates can still be used, and the variant code isn't changed too much, so it doesn't lose its compatibility to other platforms. I have some plans how to achieve this but I haven't checked the scripts for my plan so far. When I will have a finished concept, I probably will post it on the official dev-forum, so it can be discussed by developers over there.
Unfortunately a FoW option might be the most difficult option to implement as it really needs some changes in the variants, but I have already found an approach for this problem, as well.
I cannot promise that this project will be successful, but I could try it, if you would like such options. At the moment, I think, it can be possible. :)

If you can manage it so that updates of the official webdip code wouldn't interfere these options then this would be pretty awesome.

Build-anywhere and FoW would be my preference as to where to focus attention. However the other options would be great to have as well.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

I totally agree with kaner's last sentence:
"Build-anywhere and FoW would be my preference as to where to focus attention. However the other options would be great to have as well. "

But if you ask me, the option I miss the most is a new pot-type. I'm fed up with both WTA and PPSC, I'd like to try a new one. Ideas, anyone?

I once saw someone refer to a modern map game whereby everyone was given a target on the other side of the map that they had to get to and hold. Does anyone know how this was set up (e.g. which did each country have to aim for?) and would anyone be interested in trying to set a game of it up?

I for one am sick and tired of “moderate” and “compassionate conservative” politicians. None of these individuals are willing to make the tough choices necessary for getting America out of the hole. However, I’d like to make a few suggestions in order to stir the pot a bit. Here are five steps the federal government can take to fix the economic situation in the United States right now:
