reliability rating
my reliability rating is only 90+ after some vacations in which i could not complete orders, so as i tried to join a new game, i couldn't because i already had 9 games. I know the way to increase your rating is taking over for someone who left again, but now apparently i can't do that either :P Any suggestions?

When are new units created? I've conquered 4 or 5 supply centres but still only have 3 units. The friend I'm playing against has 6. In depth explanation would be awesome. Thanks

I greatly appreciate the new WWIV map, but seriously some of those font colours for players are horrendous. While it may not be a perfect match with their colour on the board, its something that needs majorly fixing.

Capture Your Capital
I once saw someone refer to a modern map game whereby everyone was given a target on the other side of the map that they had to get to and hold. Does anyone know how this was set up (e.g. which did each country have to aim for?) and would anyone be interested in trying to set a game of it up?

Personally, the way that I see it working best is that we put the 10 capitals into a hat and allocate them to a country in a random way. I think it would be too difficult to try to allocate them fairly. However, I did promise a vote, and so it only seems fair.

With regard to 'leaking', all is fair in Diplomacy. You can tell anyone anything you want. The only exception, of course, is for the coordinator of the game (who isn't technically involved in the game) who should not make contact with players other than to confirm a win.

As for draws, I think that draws should only occur when two countries both capture their capital in the same round. At this point we can either say that we play on until only one owns the capital, we could say that the first to capture it (Spring vs Autumn) wins, or we could call it a draw. Another rule to decide on. Hopefully a draw due to stalemate will not be needed.
steephie22 (933 D)
24 Oct 13 UTC
Ok so capitals like that has my vote, but for draws I vote for draw whenever you want a draw, next to a draw when more people reach their goal at the same time.

Spring/Autumn is irrelevant IMO.
steephie22 (933 D)
24 Oct 13 UTC
Basically I want to be able to draw whenever you want to so you still have a goal and hope when your capital is completely impossible to reach at that point (because of a stalemate with one guy having 17 SCs on one side for example); trying to make sure no one reaches their capital.
Battalion (2386 D)
24 Oct 13 UTC
I can't see a problem with stalemate drawing (there is no point in pointlessly continuing!), but I think that it would be a difficult situation to reach given that we are playing the modern map. It is likely that if someone gets that big they would be able to make a lunge for the target capital.
steephie22 (933 D)
24 Oct 13 UTC
Well I suppose but I think it should be allowed to draw without a real stalemate as well.
At some point there will be a few players who can't possibly hope to win so they could vote draw and work together to male it happen.
steephie22 (933 D)
24 Oct 13 UTC

And we might just agree but I can't say for sure.

Yeah, actively working towards a draw seems like a reasonable ploy.
DD (1028 D X)

My votes:
Unknown capitals, randomly (hat) assigned to us by our coordinator, who also confirms the win if and when the given player claims it. I prefer draws at any point if players agree, or when two target capitals are simultaneously taken (spring or autumn, no difference).
However, I do have a question: what happens if someone reaches the winning limit of SC-s? Or can we create the game such that there is no winning limit? (sorry, I am not experienced in creating games...)
DD (1028 D X)
24 Oct 13 UTC
Never mind that last question, we can set the limit to be any number greater than the total number of SC-s, I just checked...

I don't mean to sound pompous, but I only want to play if Capitols are unknown. Knowing the Capitols means there's at least 1 person that it will be physically impossible to work with. Why would France ever work with Britain if Paris is Britain's target? You immediately have an enemy which limits Diplomacy, which is something I wouldn't condone. Unknown makes it much more exciting since you never know if the person you're helping is really gunning for you.

Regarding draws: I would hope that no one would try to draw before a stalemate is reached, and I hope we encourage that. Otherwise I have a feeling we're going to end up with a 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 situation where both sides are too afraid to make a move for fear that their capitol will get captured. Come on people! Let's take a few risks, it's a SRG!

Regarding end of game: I actually like EmperorMaximus' idea. If two capture at the same time, play until only one has it under control still.

i am complety with you drano
I'm happy to play either way, but one thing I like about diplomacy is you know when someone's about to win and can work together against them. In an ordinary game France and England may be 98% sure they'll have to fight each other to win but they can still cooperate to grow, I think the same would be true with known capitals.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
24 Oct 13 UTC
The difference Emperor, is that in a regular game, England and France DON'T have to fight to win. They can work together and theoretically, they would never have to fight for one of them to win if the situation worked out right. In a capitols game though, they HAVE to fight if one of them has the other's capitol as his target. A subtle difference, but important to me at least.
That's true, but what's more important to me is knowing the winning condition which allows for balance of power alliance shifts, if Germany is very powerful and threatening to capture Moscow, their goal, then England and France may make peace to stop Germany

A technical question: does England have to have London as its capital? I mean, Paris is in a more defendable position than London...

And here comes my vote:
Unknown capitals
Random country assignment and draw whenever you like (mainly in case there would be a stalemate)
steephie22 (933 D)
24 Oct 13 UTC
I think that's best @DD for clarity's sake and because perfect balance isn't exactly what we're aiming for anyway.

Besides, I think I would most like to be England for this variant, even if their capitol is London. Although I'm not sure since I haven't really played the modern map a lot...

Once you guys set up the game, I will confirm each players's capital, and randomly draw and assign each player a target capitol. I assume the game will be played until someone captures an assigned capitol, correct? Is there a tie breaking procedure?

Also here are the capitals I am looking at using on the Modern II map:

Britain: London
Egypt: Cairo
France: Paris
Germany: Berlin
Italy: Rome
Poland: Warsaw
Russia: Moscow
Spain: Madrid
Ukraine: Kiev
Turkey: Ankara

Please clarify if there are any problems.
Battalion (2386 D)
25 Oct 13 UTC
Correct. One does not have to continue to control their original capital, only gain their target. We haven't confirmed the procedure if two people reach their targets (and hold for Autumn) simultaneously, but the concensus seems to be that we play on until only one nation holds their capital.

Everything seems to be in place. I'll set up the game.

A Capitalist Plan for a Capitalist Country: Sbyvonomics
I for one am sick and tired of “moderate” and “compassionate conservative” politicians. None of these individuals are willing to make the tough choices necessary for getting America out of the hole.
