Bounce question
I really should know this, but thought I'd double check.

Let's say I have an SC that I want to build in. I move a unit out.I then send 2 units to both "attack" that SC. Now let's say one of my opponents attack the SC too, but support it. Now a straight 2 vs 2 results in a bounce, but what about a 2 vs 1 vs 1?

Support Rules and Dislodgings
I'm guessing you guys play by strange rules. I've never seen this not happen outside of here: One, if a force gets dislodged, the move cuts supports/convoys. Two, to cut a support/convoy, it has to get moved towards. The supporting or convoying unit doesn't have to actually get dislodged.

Is Diplomacy Ultimately About Luck
Years ago when I first bought the board game for a group of friends, some of them didn't want to play because they saw the game was all about luck. That idea still rings in my mind from time to time.

I think we all owe Argo a round of applause for being (so-far), the most successful troll here on vdip. Well done sir!

I mean, really, his posts are intelligent enough that he *should* be able to understand our posts, but he simply works around it! Claiming WE are playing language games when he refuses to acknowledge dictionary definitions of words?? Brilliant!! Kudos to you sir!

Now, can we let this die?

(Seriously, don't even try to argue this one Argo. Just take the Kudos for a job well done. It'd be better for your time here to have been labeled a successful troll (which is at least kind of fun on some level) than for us to label you as a moron who won't accept basic definitions of words. Those people just get shunned. Especially by those who are capable of "rational strategizing".)

Just one question.

Do you know what syllogism is?

You can refer to all the dictionary definitions of words you want and then claim they mean something else.

Just because you say so, though, doesn't make it true. It doesn't matter if people concur with you either.
Argotitan (1182 D)

As for calling me a troll, please. Stop projecting.
Tomahaha (1170 D)

no, syllogism has nothing to do with definitions, ignoring basic dictionary definitions, and replacing them with what you want them to mean does not make your position superior, in fact by dodging basic definitions and dodging requests makes your position INFERIOR. Yes, you played the game of troll quite well. But asking us to stop calling you what you have clearly demonstrated yourself to be, that aint gonna happen, you sir have trolled long enough.
Argotitan (1182 D)
21 Oct 13 UTC
Yes, syllogism has everything to do with definitions.

Without it, people can claim anything means anything. You just refer to a definition, and claim something else fits even though it really doesn't.

The same goes for simply claiming someone's wrong.

YOU'RE WRONG! DON'T YOU GET BASIC LOGIC?!

Uh huh.

For what it's worth, I don't think Argo is a troll. I do think he is trying to make a point. I just think he is very bad at presenting and defending it. The constant tangents make me want to stop trying to pull his point out.

As for syllogism, in order for them to be valid, the two premises must be categorically true for the conclusion to be categorically true. The problem we are having is that we cannot categorically agree on the premises. That is why I was trying to agree on the definitions. Once they are categorically agreed on, we could come to conclusions.

But, I no longer wish to pursue this.
Argotitan (1182 D)

I agree with what you're saying about categorical truths.

The problem with language, though, is there's no such thing. For example, words often have slightly different definitions even among dictionaries, and if you really think about it, there's no necessary correspondence between a semantic idea and its aesthetic appearance. For example, there's no reason we call a square a "square" instead of a "circle". It's just a convention.

The problem is conventions vary among communities where people communicate differently, especially when it comes to principles which have no consistent empirical benchmark...

...so what you have to do is discuss things entirely differently. First, both sides define words analytically. Then, both sides keep defining and redefining words in context of the vocabulary at hand until they conclude a universal paradigm that doesn't leave anything out.

Is Norway Undervalued in 1066?
Something I notice when playing 1066 (v2) is that England and Normandy always do battle, and Norway usually has a lot of leeway to mop things up. I guess the larger size of the North Sea spaces give the illusion that Norway is farther away, but in reality, it's just two spaces away just like Normandy.

Rational Moves Test
You guys could really use some sort of test to license people to play games in. It's annoying when irrational players ruin the game for rational players by allowing third players to win after overrunning them.

Does Drawing in WTA Backfire?
I was wondering if the logic behind WTA draws isn't necessarily reliable. Draws allow people to make alliances, and instead of drawing against the solo winner, they simply draw among themselves instead of pursuing a solo victory. Is there a way to disable drawing so this doesn't happen?

Does Anyone Want to Play a Live Classic?
It's the weekend, so I figured maybe there's a handful of several people who want to play a classic game with 10 minute turns.

Please post here if you're interested. I'll check in regularly over the new few hours in case there's interest.

This is purely out of interest. Add your variant of choice below, or if it is already on the list add a +1 to it. For me it would be:
